But that isn\u2019t enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about the document signature?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe examiner has a high-resolution scan now. He wants originals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Which Amanda had apparently taken.<\/p>\n<p>My anger sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>Removing documents after a legal request and active review crossed a line far beyond family secrecy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould she destroy them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe could try.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWould that help her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot much if copies exist elsewhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo they?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re about to find out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We began reconstructing the transaction from independent sources.<\/p>\n<p>Bank statements.<\/p>\n<p>Board minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Lender correspondence.<\/p>\n<p>Archived emails.<\/p>\n<p>By early evening, a troubling outline emerged.<\/p>\n<p>Three days before Charles supposedly signed the authorization, a lender had threatened enforcement against a personal guarantee tied to Amanda.<\/p>\n<p>Not Isaac.<\/p>\n<p>Amanda.<\/p>\n<p>The guarantee related to an investment vehicle she had created years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>The vehicle had borrowed heavily.<\/p>\n<p>The money had not gone into the company.<\/p>\n<p>It had financed private real estate investments.<\/p>\n<p>Several failed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo the four million was hers,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPotentially.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd someone moved it onto the company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is what the records suggest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the transaction ledger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the company assumed her obligation, who approved it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to the disputed documents, Charles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if Charles didn\u2019t?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen we have a much bigger problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought of Amanda\u2019s insistence that everything she did was for Isaac.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps that had been true in her own mind.<\/p>\n<p>But people often called self-preservation protection when the two became inconvenient to separate.<\/p>\n<p>At 7:42, Daniel called me directly.<\/p>\n<p>I recognized his voice immediately even though we had never spoken.<\/p>\n<p>Low.<\/p>\n<p>Measured.<\/p>\n<p>Cautious.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAm I catching you at a bad time?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was told you received a photograph.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That stopped me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I think I know who sent it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Farrah looked up sharply.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA man named Thomas Bell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was my father\u2019s driver during the last year of his life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I searched my memory.<\/p>\n<p>The name meant nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat makes you think it was him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he took Charles to the hospital that week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is he now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen did you last speak to him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFour years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter my father died, Thomas contacted me. He said something happened near the end that I should know about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wouldn\u2019t say over the phone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you meet?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother was dying. I left the country for months. When I came back, his number no longer worked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Farrah mouthed: ask why now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would he contact us now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he know about your shares?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That surprised me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father trusted him more than people realized.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWould he know Gregory?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Amanda?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVery well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s tone changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas drove her often too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you know where he lived?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have an old address.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSend it to Farrah, not me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnderstood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before hanging up, Daniel said, \u201cThere\u2019s something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father once told me that if anything happened to him before he finished cleaning up the company, I should not trust documents signed in the final month of his life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Farrah.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said he was being pressured to approve things he didn\u2019t understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe never told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That frustrated me.<\/p>\n<p>Charles had left warning after warning without giving anyone enough information to act confidently.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps because he assumed he still had time.<\/p>\n<p>People almost always did.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was sick. Medication affected him. Some days he was clear. Some days he wasn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould he have signed something without remembering?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo the document might be legitimate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt might.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut my father became paranoid about people putting papers in front of him while he was weak.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That changed the issue again.<\/p>\n<p>Forgery was one possibility.<\/p>\n<p>Undue influence was another.<\/p>\n<p>A signature could be authentic and still conceal wrongdoing.<\/p>\n<p>After the call, Farrah and I reviewed Charles\u2019s medical timeline.<\/p>\n<p>He had been admitted twice during the final month.<\/p>\n<p>The date of the disputed authorization fell during the second admission.<\/p>\n<p>Hospital records could eventually confirm whether he was physically capable of leaving.<\/p>\n<p>Until then, we had the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>At 9:06, Isaac called again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSecurity footage came back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it show?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGregory arrived at 8:43 this morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeft?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c10:12.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Mom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe left at 5:11.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she carry the files?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Farrah leaned closer to the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Gregory?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe had a leather document case when he left. Larger than when he arrived.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you prove the files were inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen don\u2019t say they were.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Isaac sounded angry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt what point are we allowed to acknowledge the obvious?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the obvious becomes evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He breathed out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hate this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo do I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He became quiet.<\/p>\n<p>Then he asked, \u201cDo you think Mom forged Dad\u2019s signature?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you think Gregory did?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you think Daniel is telling the truth?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He gave a bitter laugh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo we know nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know plenty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I began counting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know Daniel existed. We know Charles gave him shares. We know Amanda persuaded him to surrender them. We know those shares were used in financial restructuring. We know a four-million-dollar liability associated with Amanda moved onto company books. We know Charles\u2019s signature appears on the approval. We know a photograph suggests he may have been hospitalized when that approval was supposedly executed.
