A mug of untouched coffee sat on Charles\u2019s old desk.<\/p>\n<p>Amanda was nowhere in sight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is she?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHas she spoken married.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Isaac frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amanda nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn\u2019t cheat on you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer seemed to I found correspondence. I confronted him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me Daniel was his responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amanda\u2019s face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think this is simple.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think he had another son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe had a family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo did Daniel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amanda looked away.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered her words from the phone.<\/p>\n<p>If Isaac finds out who Daniel is, he will never forgive me.<\/p>\n<p>The secret was not merely Daniel\u2019s existence.<\/p>\n<p>There was more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened after Charles died?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Amanda\u2019s eyes snapped toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis has nothing to do with you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt does if you used accounts I control to continue payments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Isaac looked at his mother.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat payments?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She remained silent.<\/p>\n<p>Farrah opened the folder from the previous day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore than one point six million dollars was transferred over several years into an entity connected to Daniel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Isaac stared at Amanda.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad supported him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you continued?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amanda looked cornered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor a while.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Charles made me promise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That did not fit.<\/p>\n<p>If she had honored the promise, why the secrecy and panic?<\/p>\n<p>Farrah apparently reached the same conclusion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat changed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amanda glared at her.<\/p>\n<p>Farrah remained calm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe payments stopped shortly before Charles died. Yesterday you attempted to send two hundred and eighty thousand dollars to the same structure. Something happened between those dates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amanda stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m finished.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Isaac stood too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said I\u2019m finished.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I said no.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice cracked.<\/p>\n<p>He lowered it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease, Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That changed her more effectively than anger.<\/p>\n<p>She sat again.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds, all we heard was the faint ticking of the old clock on Charles\u2019s desk.<\/p>\n<p>Then Amanda said, \u201cDaniel came here after your father died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Isaac froze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo this house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo speak with you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amanda did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>Isaac understood before she spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou stopped him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was grieving. You were grieving. The company was collapsing. There was nothing to gain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wanted to meet me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn\u2019t need another problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Isaac stepped backward as though she had touched him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA brother was a problem?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn\u2019t know him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause you made sure I didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amanda\u2019s composure fractured.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was trying to protect what your father left you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Isaac laughed once.<\/p>\n<p>There was no humor in it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Dad leave me? Debt?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amanda recoiled.<\/p>\n<p>He immediately looked ashamed, but the truth remained.<\/p>\n<p>Charles had left Isaac a family name, a failing company, a mortgaged mansion and apparently a brother nobody had told him existed.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Hale cleared his throat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is another document.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone looked toward him.<\/p>\n<p>He held a sealed envelope.<\/p>\n<p>This one had Isaac\u2019s full name written across it.<\/p>\n<p>Isaac took it.<\/p>\n<p>The paper trembled slightly in his hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas this here the whole time?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Hale nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Amanda closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew about this too,\u201d Isaac said.<\/p>\n<p>She did not deny it.<\/p>\n<p>He opened the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a letter.<\/p>\n<p>Several pages.<\/p>\n<p>Charles\u2019s handwriting covered both sides.<\/p>\n<p>Isaac read silently.<\/p>\n<p>His expression changed line by line.<\/p>\n<p>Confusion.<\/p>\n<p>Pain.<\/p>\n<p>Then anger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it say?\u201d Amanda asked.<\/p>\n<p>Isaac looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou never read it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad wanted me to meet Daniel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amanda\u2019s lips pressed together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wanted us to run the company together eventually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My attention sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>That explained the secrecy around more than family.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel was not merely a private responsibility.<\/p>\n<p>Charles had imagined a role for him.<\/p>\n<p>Isaac continued reading.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says Daniel studied engineering and operations. He says Daniel helped redesign one of our manufacturing systems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin had once mentioned an anonymous consultant who had saved the company a substantial amount before Charles died.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered because the work had been unusually good.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas Daniel the consultant?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Amanda\u2019s expression answered before her words did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Isaac sat down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe worked for the company?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBriefly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid I meet him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father kept him under a consulting contract.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Isaac stared at the letter again.<\/p>\n<p>Then his face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s something about shares.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amanda went rigid.<\/p>\n<p>Farrah stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Isaac read the passage twice.<\/p>\n<p>Then he handed the letter to Farrah.<\/p>\n<p>Charles had intended to transfer a minority block of his personal company shares to Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>Not control.<\/p>\n<p>Not half the company.<\/p>\n<p>But enough to make Daniel a meaningful shareholder.<\/p>\n<p>Farrah read the final paragraph and looked toward Amanda.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas this transfer completed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Amanda said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCharles died before signing the final papers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Hale frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat may not be accurate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amanda turned toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The attorney walked to the cabinet and removed another file.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI handled portions of Charles\u2019s estate, but another firm handled corporate matters. If executed copies exist, they may have been filed separately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amanda\u2019s face changed again.<\/p>\n<p>Isaac saw it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said no.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But her denial was too fast.<\/p>\n<p>Farrah closed the letter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want the company\u2019s historical shareholder records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amanda stood abruptly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have no authority to demand\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>She turned toward me.<\/p>\n<p>The restructuring had given my investment entities extensive information rights.<\/p>\n<p>Farrah already knew that.<\/p>\n<p>So did Amanda now.<\/p>\n<p>Isaac looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFind them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was not a command.<\/p>\n<p>It was a request.<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Farrah called Martin.<\/p>\n<p>The search took less than an hour.<\/p>\n<p>We remained in Charles\u2019s study while his old files were inventoried.<\/p>\n<p>At 11:47, Martin called back.<\/p>\n<p>Farrah placed him on speaker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found something,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Isaac gripped the arm of his chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA historical share transfer executed six weeks before Charles died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amanda stood perfectly still.<\/p>\n<p>Martin continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFourteen percent of Charles\u2019s personal holdings were transferred into a trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor whom?\u201d Isaac asked.<\/p>\n<p>Martin hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Isaac closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Farrah asked the next question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are those shares now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paper moved on Martin\u2019s end.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat problem?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were transferred out of Daniel\u2019s trust after Charles died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmanda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Isaac opened his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Amanda looked toward the door.<\/p>\n<p>And for the first time since this began, I understood why she had been terrified of us opening the cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s existence was only the first secret.<\/p>\n<p>The second was what she had done after Charles was gone.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=27953\">Click here to continue reading: PART 7: The Missing Shares Forced Amanda to Admit What She Had Done to Daniel After Charles\u2019s Funeral<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At nine the next morning, I returned to the mansion with Farrah.
