She had Ryan's dark hair.

But the shape of her mouth made Claire's chest tighten.

Claire had seen that mouth in childhood photographs of herself.

She enlarged the image.

There was a shallow dimple beside Lily's left cheek.

Claire touched the screen.

Her mother had possessed the same dimple.

She died six years before the IVF treatments began.

Claire remembered sitting beside her hospital bed and listening to her talk about grandchildren she knew she might never meet.

Claire shut off the phone.

For several minutes she cried without making a sound.

Not because Lily belonged to her in some simple way.

Nothing about this was simple.

Megan had carried her.

Megan had endured pregnancy and childbirth.

Ryan had raised her from birth.

Whatever crimes or betrayals brought Lily into the world, Lily knew those people as her parents.

Claire could not erase nine months of attachment because adults had violated her rights.

That realization shaped everything she did next.

At eight the following morning, Angela arrived carrying coffee.

Claire opened the door in sweatpants.

"You look terrible," Angela said.

"Thank you."

"I brought caffeine instead of sympathy."

"That's why I hired you."

It was the first joke Claire had made in days.

They sat at the small dining table.

Angela removed a legal pad.

"We need to decide what you're asking the court for."

Claire looked toward the dark phone.

"Ryan thinks I'm going to take Lily."

"Are you?"

"No."

Angela waited.

Claire rubbed her thumb along the edge of her coffee cup.

"I want legal recognition."

"Parentage."

"Yes."

"And visitation?"

Claire swallowed.

"Eventually."

"Why eventually?"

"Because I'm a stranger to her."

Angela's expression softened.

Claire continued.

"I don't care what Ryan deserves. I care what Lily needs."

"Those aren't necessarily opposing things."

"I know. But I don't want everyone turning her into the rope in a tug-of-war."

Angela wrote something.

Claire watched her.

"I want the truth documented. I want access to her medical information. She should know her genetic history. And when she's old enough, nobody gets to invent some prettier story about where she came from."

"Good."

"And I want to meet her."

Angela stopped writing.

Claire looked down.

The request sounded enormous when spoken.

"I don't even know what that means."

"We ask for supervised introductory visitation."

"What if Megan refuses?"

"Then the court decides."

Claire nodded slowly.

Angela turned another page.

"The civil case is separate. We can pursue damages against Ryan, potentially Megan depending on what evidence establishes about her knowledge, and possibly the clinic."

Claire looked up.

"The clinic?"

"If procedures were bypassed, they have questions to answer."

Claire remembered Dr. Reed's face.

"Someone accepted that form."

"Exactly."

"And nobody called me."

"Apparently not."

Claire stared toward the window.

One forged signature should not have been enough.

The thought had been bothering her.

Westbridge had once required Claire to show identification merely to alter a billing address.

Yet somehow an embryo had been transferred into another woman's body without Claire appearing at the clinic.

Without a telephone verification.

Without a face-to-face consent appointment.

"Angela."

"Hm?"

"Ryan couldn't have done this alone."

Angela stopped.

Claire turned toward her.

"Even with the forged form, someone inside Westbridge had to process it."

"That's one possibility."

"Could Patricia have arranged that?"

"We don't know."

"But we're going to find out."

Angela gave a small nod.

"Yes."

At ten fourteen, Claire's phone rang again.

Megan.

Claire watched the screen.

Angela said nothing.

On the fifth ring, Claire answered.

"Hello."

For several seconds there was only breathing.

Then Megan said, "Ryan left."

Claire closed her eyes.

"Where?"

"I don't know."

"Why are you calling me?"

Another silence.

"Lily is here."

Claire gripped the phone.

She could hear a baby babbling faintly in the background.

The sound was so ordinary that it hurt.

Megan's voice broke.

"I didn't know."

Claire said nothing.

"I knew the embryo was yours," Megan continued. "I'm not going to lie about that."

Angela looked sharply toward Claire.

Claire put the call on speaker.

Megan kept talking.

"But Ryan said you had signed everything. Patricia said the divorce agreement meant you didn't want them."

"Did you ever ask me?"

Megan began crying.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because I was afraid you'd say no."

Claire closed her eyes.

There it was.

Not innocence.

Not exactly.

Megan might have believed the paperwork was legal, but somewhere beneath that belief she had understood enough to avoid the one person who could confirm it.

Claire's voice stayed level.

"You were afraid I would say no, so you made sure you never asked."

"Yes."

The admission hung between them.

Then a baby squealed through the speaker.

Claire's hand trembled.

Megan became quiet.

"That's Lily."

Claire could not answer.

"I know you hate me."

"This isn't about whether I hate you."

"Then what do you want?"

Claire looked at Angela.

The lawyer gave no signal.

The decision belonged to Claire.

"I want Lily protected from whatever happens next."

Megan sniffed.

"Are you going to take her?"

"No."

The answer came easily.

Megan exhaled.

"But I'm not disappearing either."

Silence returned.

"I filed for legal recognition," Claire said.

Megan began breathing faster.

"Claire—"

"I'm asking for a gradual supervised introduction. I'm not showing up at your house. I'm not ripping her away from you."

"Ryan will fight it."

"I know."

"Patricia too."

"I know."

Megan whispered something Claire almost missed.

"I won't."

Claire sat straighter.

"What?"

"I won't fight you meeting her."

Angela's pen stopped.

Claire stared at the phone.

"Why?"

Megan took several seconds to answer.

"Because yesterday I looked at her and realized someday she's going to ask where she came from."

Claire's eyes filled.

"And I don't want my first honest answer to her to happen when she's eighteen."

For the first time since learning about the embryo, Claire felt the ground beneath her shift toward something other than anger.

Not forgiveness.

That was much too far away.

But perhaps truth could begin before forgiveness did.

"When?" Claire asked.

Megan understood immediately.

"I'll talk to my attorney."

"Not Ryan?"

"No."

Claire heard determination beneath Megan's fear.

"I'll talk to my own attorney."

After the call ended, Angela stared at the phone.

"That was useful."

Claire barely heard her.

She was thinking about Lily's voice.

A meaningless string of baby sounds lasting perhaps three seconds.

It was the first sound Claire had ever heard her daughter make.

Two weeks later, Claire stood outside a supervised visitation room with soft blue walls visible through the narrow window.

Her hands were shaking.

Angela waited beside her.

"You can change your mind."

Claire shook her head.

"No."

Through the glass she could see a basket of toys, foam blocks, two chairs, and a rug patterned with clouds.

Then the opposite door opened.

Megan entered first.

Claire stopped breathing.

A woman from family services followed.

And in her arms was Lily.

Nine months old.

Round cheeks.

Dark hair.

Wide, serious eyes.

Claire's knees nearly weakened.

The case was only beginning. Ryan's attorney had already challenged the parentage petition. Cole's investigation into the forged authorization continued. Westbridge was auditing employee access records, and Patricia had retained counsel.

There would be hearings.

Depositions.

Questions Claire did not yet know how to answer.

But none of those things existed for the little girl being carried across the blue room.

The caseworker opened Claire's door.

"You don't have to pick her up," she said quietly. "Let Lily decide how quickly she wants to approach you."

Claire nodded.

She entered.

Megan sat Lily on the rug.

For one brief second the two women looked at each other.

Megan's face contained exhaustion, guilt, fear, and something Claire could not yet name.

Claire did not speak.

She sat on the carpet several feet away.

Lily stared at her.

Claire kept her hands in her lap.

"Hi," she whispered.

Lily tilted her head.

Then she began crawling.

Slowly.

One palm.

One knee.

Then the other.

Claire's vision blurred.

Nobody in the room moved.

Lily reached Claire and stopped.

She examined Claire's face with solemn concentration.

Then she noticed Claire's hand resting against the rug.

Her tiny fingers reached forward.

Claire remained completely still.

Lily wrapped them around Claire's index finger.

The touch was almost weightless.

Claire's composure broke.

A tear slid down her cheek.

She did not pull Lily closer.

She did not claim anything.

She simply allowed the little girl to hold on.

Then Claire looked across the room at Megan.

Megan was crying too.

Neither woman spoke.

They did not need to.

Because Claire finally understood what the next battle had to protect.

She had spent months searching for proof of what Ryan had taken from her.

Now, holding one tiny hand, Claire knew the harder question was what she would choose to give Lily in return.

And before this was finished, she intended to discover exactly who had made the theft possible.

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: A Clinic Login Used After Midnight Leads Claire Toward an Employee Who Knew Exactly Which Safeguard Had Been Quietly Removed

Claire did not sleep that night.
