Then I come to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReally?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trust test.<\/p>\n<p>Small.<\/p>\n<p>Concrete.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday came.<\/p>\n<p>Carter arrived at ten exactly.<\/p>\n<p>No gift.<\/p>\n<p>No excuse.<\/p>\n<p>He spent three hours helping Emma build a cardboard castle and listening to Chloe explain a school project.<\/p>\n<p>At noon, Jessica texted that Elliot had a feeding issue.<\/p>\n<p>Carter looked at the phone.<\/p>\n<p>I saw the conflict.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo if you need to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chloe heard.<\/p>\n<p>Carter said, \u201cI&#39;m staying until two like I promised unless it&#39;s an emergency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It wasn&#39;t.<\/p>\n<p>He stayed.<\/p>\n<p>At two, he left.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe watched from the window.<\/p>\n<p>Then said, \u201cHe passed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was the beginning of repair.<\/p>\n<p>Not dramatic.<\/p>\n<p>Not complete.<\/p>\n<p>A Saturday kept.<\/p>\n<p>That evening, Richard called.<\/p>\n<p>I almost didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>Then did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElliot is stable,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarter told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy are you calling?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo ask if Chloe and Emma are all right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMay I speak to them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No argument.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you expect?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why ask?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause asking is what I should have done more often.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That landed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe someday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We sat in silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then Richard said, \u201cI resigned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt should have happened earlier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will not contest the trust modifications.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will cooperate with prosecutors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLauren.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>He had said versions before.<\/p>\n<p>This one sounded smaller.<\/p>\n<p>Less like a thesis.<\/p>\n<p>More like a fact.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not forgiven.<\/p>\n<p>He understood.<\/p>\n<p>He did not ask.<\/p>\n<p>At ten, Dana sent a message.<\/p>\n<p>All known reproductive materials accounted for.
