Carter's eyebrows.”

Adrian laughed harder.

“Cruel.”

“Chloe noticed you look like Richard.”

“That part is true.”

He became quiet.

“Do they want to meet?”

“Not yet.”

“Okay.”

No disappointment weaponized.

Good.

“Will you wait?”

“As long as they need.”

Another boundary honored.

“Thank you.”

He looked at me.

“For what?”

“Not making biology urgent.”

Adrian nodded.

“I've had enough people use genetics as a deadline.”

Exactly.

We spoke about Grace.

Adrian was not her biological father.

But he cared because she had initially been presented to him as his child.

He had begun sending age-appropriate books through Marianne's attorney.

No contact expectation.

Just small gestures.

Matthew was doing something similar with Ethan.

Not fatherhood by declaration.

Presence by consent.

Different.

Healthier.

Messier.

Human.

At seven, Dana called again.

“We have Richard's complete donor-selection timeline.”

“What changes?”

“One major point.”

“What?”

“Adrian was not his first choice.”

I frowned.

“Who was?”

“Carter.”

“That makes sense.”

“No. Before Carter.”

My skin prickled.

“Before?”

“Richard considered preserving a sperm sample from Henry before Henry died.”

I stared.

“For future descendants?”

“Yes.”

“Did he?”

“No viable reproductive sample survived.”

“Then Robert?”

“Second.”

“Adrian?”

“Later.”

“So this began before my marriage.”

“Yes.”

That mattered.

I had entered an existing obsession.

Richard had not built the system around me.

He had plugged me into a system he was already imagining.

I felt relief.

Strange, but real.

Not because the violation shrank.

Because I had spent weeks asking why me.

The truest answer was finally clear.

It was never really about me.

Richard would have done this to whoever occupied the role he needed filled.

I was selected because I was available, healthy, fertile, connected to Carter, and scientifically useful.

But I was not uniquely targeted because of some personal quality that made me responsible.

The system predated me.

That distinction mattered.

Then Dana added:

“There's another thing.”

“What?”

“Henry objected.”

“What?”

“Before he died, he learned Richard had discussed preserving family reproductive material.”

My pulse changed.

“How?”

“Robert told him.”

“What did Henry say?”

Dana read from a letter.

No child of mine is to use biology as a means of extending himself beyond his proper life.

I closed my eyes.

Henry, whose name had been used to justify decades of continuity planning, had explicitly rejected the premise.

“Richard knew.”

“Yes.”

“And continued anyway.”

“Yes.”

“Victor?”

“Probably didn't know.”

The tragedy deepened.

Each generation claimed to honor the previous one by violating what that person actually wanted.

Richard claimed Henry.

Victor claimed Richard.

Both turned dead men into permission slips.

That night, I called Richard.

Not through lawyers.

He answered.

“Lauren.”

“Did your father tell you not to preserve his reproductive material?”

Silence.

“Yes.”

“Then why did you?”

“Because he was dying.”

“That isn't an answer.”

“He was afraid.”

“Maybe he was clear.”

Richard exhaled.

“I thought grief made him short-sighted.”

“Or maybe you disagreed.”

“Yes.”

“Why is disagreement so difficult for you to leave alone?”

Silence.

“Why does someone else's no become something you have to solve?”

Richard answered quietly.

“Because I was taught that losing control meant losing everything.”

“By whom?”

“My father.”

I almost laughed.

“The same father who wrote that you confuse inheritance with possession?”

“Yes.”

“Then maybe you learned the wrong lesson.”

“I did.”

There was no defense left in him.

“What do you want from me?”

“Nothing.”

“Then why call?”

“Because I wanted to hear you say it.”

“What?”

“That you were wrong.”

Richard was silent.

Then:

“I was wrong.”

Not enough.

Still.

I ended the call.

At bedtime, Emma asked if Adrian was coming for Christmas.

“No.”

“Maybe next Christmas?”

“Maybe.”

Chloe said, “Only if we decide.”

“Yes.”

She looked satisfied.

Then she asked, “What about Grandpa Richard?”

“What about him?”

“Is he coming?”

I hesitated.

“No.”

“Because of boundaries?”

“Yes.”

Emma nodded seriously.

“No cookies after nine.”

Exactly.

Click here to continue reading: PART 31: The Last Frozen Embryo Was Gone, but One Court Hearing
