I knew about Meridian. I knew there was a child. I knew about Grace after Marianne came to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did not know about Ethan. I did not know about Jessica&#39;s embryo until later. I didn&#39;t know Dad kept his own sperm plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you expect me to sort your ignorance into innocence?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;ll tell Dana everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;ll sign whatever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;ll give up the shares.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That stopped me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ones Dad transferred after Meridian.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I shouldn&#39;t have them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For once, I believed the instinct mattered.<\/p>\n<p>Not because surrendering money repaired harm.<\/p>\n<p>Because it proved he finally understood the transaction he had spent years refusing to name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTalk to your lawyer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon&#39;t perform remorse for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>I expected rage.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, grief arrived.<\/p>\n<p>Not for the marriage.<\/p>\n<p>That had been dead.<\/p>\n<p>For the version of the past I thought was real.<\/p>\n<p>Years of dinners.<\/p>\n<p>School drop-offs.<\/p>\n<p>Family trips.<\/p>\n<p>Carter knowing secrets about our daughters&#39; conception.<\/p>\n<p>Knowing another child existed.<\/p>\n<p>Sitting beside me anyway.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel found me in the car outside the law office.<\/p>\n<p>I had not started the engine.<\/p>\n<p>She opened the passenger door and sat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much more?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She waited.<\/p>\n<p>I told her.<\/p>\n<p>Not everything.<\/p>\n<p>Just the shape.<\/p>\n<p>When I finished, she looked straight ahead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to say something violent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn&#39;t going to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We sat quietly.<\/p>\n<p>Then Rachel said, \u201cYou know what the worst part is?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe probably loved you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is the worst part?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause people think love prevents betrayal. It doesn&#39;t. Sometimes selfish people love someone and still choose themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked away.<\/p>\n<p>That hurt more than calling Carter a monster would have.<\/p>\n<p>Because monsters simplify the world.<\/p>\n<p>Carter was not a monster.<\/p>\n<p>He was a man who loved me and repeatedly decided his fear, inheritance, and comfort mattered more than my right to know my own life.<\/p>\n<p>That was enough.<\/p>\n<p>At five, Dana received records of the voting-share transfer.<\/p>\n<p>Same quarter as Meridian&#39;s embryo transfer.<\/p>\n<p>No explicit contract.<\/p>\n<p>No smoking gun.<\/p>\n<p>Just timing.<\/p>\n<p>Richard rewarded Carter&#39;s silence.<\/p>\n<p>Carter accepted.<\/p>\n<p>A system sustained by mutual benefit.<\/p>\n<p>Then Ward sent one final file.<\/p>\n<p>The birth notification from Summit Ridge.<\/p>\n<p>Female infant.<\/p>\n<p>Healthy.<\/p>\n<p>Delivered at term.<\/p>\n<p>No name in the research copy.<\/p>\n<p>Carter had received it.<\/p>\n<p>Forwarded it to Richard.<\/p>\n<p>One line in his email:<\/p>\n<p>It&#39;s done. Make sure Lauren never sees this.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Eight years of ambiguity vanished.<\/p>\n<p>Not scared.<\/p>\n<p>Not confused.<\/p>\n<p>Not manipulated.<\/p>\n<p>A choice.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever else Carter became later, that moment belonged to him.<\/p>\n<p>I forwarded the email back to him without words.<\/p>\n<p>He did not reply.<\/p>\n<p>At 7:11, Dana called.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarter&#39;s attorney says he wants to amend his sworn statement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo include Meridian.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe also wants to waive privilege over certain communications with Richard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo provide full cooperation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat could expose him criminally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knows?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd still wants to?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Accountability is not absolution.<\/p>\n<p>But it is different from hiding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then Dana said, \u201cLauren, Ward identified one more thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reconstructed embryo wasn&#39;t originally intended for Leah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho was?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA different recipient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dana paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJessica.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My eyes opened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYears before the affair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went silent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJessica knew Richard then?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat makes no sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt may.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJessica worked at Oakfield before she ever became a Sterling consultant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWard&#39;s file includes a declined recipient evaluation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJessica declined?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMedical concern.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe embryo was experimental.
