number appears in Vale&#39;s records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOlder alias table.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRobert Sterling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>Richard&#39;s deceased brother.<\/p>\n<p>Matthew&#39;s father.<\/p>\n<p>The man whose trust line controlled succession.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow is that possible?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStored sample.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom when?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDecades ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConsent?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnknown.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leah covered her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Dana continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRichard had access to reproductive material from Robert too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The scale became almost incomprehensible.<\/p>\n<p>Richard had collected or preserved genetic material from nearly every male branch.<\/p>\n<p>Carter.<\/p>\n<p>Adrian.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>Matthew.<\/p>\n<p>Robert.<\/p>\n<p>Himself.<\/p>\n<p>As if family were a private gene bank.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSadie is Robert&#39;s biological daughter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPotentially.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>That would make her Matthew&#39;s half sister.<\/p>\n<p>A direct descendant of Robert.<\/p>\n<p>Female.<\/p>\n<p>Not useful to the trust&#39;s male requirement.<\/p>\n<p>Which explained why Richard treated her as data rather than succession.<\/p>\n<p>But she was genetically connected to the exact branch he had spent decades manipulating.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Richard know the donor was Robert?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlmost certainly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Leah?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leah began crying harder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought this was research.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd also something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was Richard&#39;s talent.<\/p>\n<p>One action.<\/p>\n<p>Several purposes.<\/p>\n<p>No participant knowing the whole.<\/p>\n<p>After the call, Dana traced the donor sample.<\/p>\n<p>Robert had banked sperm in the early 1990s during cancer treatment.<\/p>\n<p>He never used it.<\/p>\n<p>Records showed the sample should have been destroyed after his death.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn&#39;t.<\/p>\n<p>Vale had transferred it into private storage at Richard&#39;s request.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>Destroyed on paper.<\/p>\n<p>Preserved in reality.<\/p>\n<p>At 4:40, Matthew joined a call.<\/p>\n<p>When Dana told him about Sadie, he stared at the screen for a long time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father has a daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo years old.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter he&#39;s been dead for twenty-three years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He leaned back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis family is insane.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody argued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes Leah know what that makes Sadie?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knows the genetic relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes Richard know we found her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Matthew looked directly at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProtect that child before he does anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe&#39;ll try to use her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe doesn&#39;t satisfy the male trust clause.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat won&#39;t stop him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I understood.<\/p>\n<p>Richard didn&#39;t need children to fit one role.<\/p>\n<p>He invented new roles.<\/p>\n<p>Research.<\/p>\n<p>Leverage.<\/p>\n<p>Trust.<\/p>\n<p>Insurance.<\/p>\n<p>Continuity.<\/p>\n<p>Every life could become useful somehow.<\/p>\n<p>At five, Dana obtained an emergency privacy order covering Sadie&#39;s identity and medical records.<\/p>\n<p>Leah agreed to independent legal representation.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, Richard would not decide who interpreted his own name.<\/p>\n<p>Not Vale.<\/p>\n<p>Not a clinic administrator.<\/p>\n<p>A woman.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Celeste Ward.<\/p>\n<p>The name meant nothing to me.<\/p>\n<p>Dana searched.<\/p>\n<p>Then her face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWard was Meridian&#39;s reproductive science director.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStill alive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeattle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>Seattle.<\/p>\n<p>The city I had fled to.<\/p>\n<p>The city where my sister lived.<\/p>\n<p>The city where my daughters were sleeping upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cContact her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At seven, Ward&#39;s attorney replied before Dana even called.<\/p>\n<p>That meant she had been waiting too.<\/p>\n<p>Her response was short.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Ward is willing to meet Lauren Mercer-Sterling privately with counsel.
