I&#39;m not going to predict outcomes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat matters now is preserving evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At 4:00, the DNA lab called Dana with preliminary expedited results from Adrian&#39;s sample compared against the archived embryo genetic profile.<\/p>\n<p>Match.<\/p>\n<p>Near certainty.<\/p>\n<p>Adrian Mercer was the biological father of the tested embryos.<\/p>\n<p>Not Carter.<\/p>\n<p>The conclusion was no longer theory.<\/p>\n<p>I asked the question I had been avoiding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChloe and Emma?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir samples are still processing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSoon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Soon could mean hours.<\/p>\n<p>It felt like weeks.<\/p>\n<p>At 5:31, Carter called.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad knows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knows someone contacted Adrian.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is Richard?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGone where?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis driver says he left the office two hours ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith anyone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPhone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he take files?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome are missing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Continuity Project box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI copied most of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost isn&#39;t all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere would he go?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThink.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy parents&#39; house. Club. Airport.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarianne.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Richard thinks Adrian is talking, he may try to control the other witnesses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter inhaled sharply.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarianne.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;ll call\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Do not send your people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell Dana.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I called her myself.<\/p>\n<p>She had already contacted Marianne&#39;s attorney.<\/p>\n<p>There was a problem.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarianne isn&#39;t answering.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart sank.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrace?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnknown.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCall police.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey&#39;re doing a welfare check.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel came into the room while I listened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I mouthed, Marianne.<\/p>\n<p>She understood.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty minutes later, Dana called again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarianne and Grace are safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey had left home earlier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarianne received a warning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdrian.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I blinked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter our call, he contacted her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew how?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe found an old number.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat Richard might be trying to contain the situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd she believed him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did she go?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer attorney asked that we not disclose it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I understood.<\/p>\n<p>Protect the child first.<\/p>\n<p>Always.<\/p>\n<p>Then Dana added, \u201cMarianne agreed to speak tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse quickened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout the embryo?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes she know I exist?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes Grace know about me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe is three, Lauren.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer still hurt.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at a photograph Rachel had taken that morning.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe and Emma on the couch.<\/p>\n<p>Sisters.<\/p>\n<p>Somewhere south of us was another little girl with the same biological parents.<\/p>\n<p>Grace.<\/p>\n<p>And in another state, Jessica carried their biological brother.<\/p>\n<p>Richard had spent years trying to preserve a family line.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, he had created a family structure so tangled that none of the children involved could understand it without first understanding his lies.<\/p>\n<p>That night, the lab portal updated.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe&#39;s result arrived first.<\/p>\n<p>I opened it alone.<\/p>\n<p>Maternal match: confirmed.<\/p>\n<p>Paternal comparison to Adrian Mercer: consistent with biological paternity.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the screen until the words blurred.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe.<\/p>\n<p>Adrian&#39;s biological daughter.<\/p>\n<p>Not Carter&#39;s.<\/p>\n<p>Minutes later, Emma&#39;s result appeared.<\/p>\n<p>The same conclusion.<\/p>\n<p>I sat in the dark guest room and let myself cry.<\/p>\n<p>Not because my daughters had changed.<\/p>\n<p>They hadn&#39;t.<\/p>\n<p>Not because Carter had suddenly ceased to be the man who had raised them.<\/p>\n<p>Biology did not erase eight years or five.<\/p>\n<p>I cried because once again, a truth about my own family had been known by other people before it was known by me.<\/p>\n<p>Then my phone buzzed.<\/p>\n<p>A message from Carter.<\/p>\n<p>I know.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at those two words.<\/p>\n<p>He must have received results through Dana or his own testing.<\/p>\n<p>Another message followed.<\/p>\n<p>Are they mine?<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Then typed:<\/p>\n<p>They are your daughters. The DNA says Adrian is their biological father.
