That afternoon, I barely noticed.

My mind remained trapped inside a fertility clinic storage room I had not seen in years, imagining a small frozen embryo labeled with a number that Carter and I once knew by heart.

Four embryos.

Four possibilities.

The first had become Chloe.

The second had become Emma.

The third was female.

The fourth was male.

After Emma's delivery, my obstetrician had been direct: another pregnancy could place me at serious risk.

Carter and I had sat beside each other in her office and agreed we were finished.

Two daughters.

A complete family.

At least, I thought we'd agreed.

A year later, Carter told me Oakfield had reported that the remaining embryos were no longer viable.

I remembered the evening clearly.

He came home carrying a cream-colored envelope and placed it beside my dinner plate.

“It's probably for the best,” he said.

I cried.

Not because I intended to have another baby, but because embryos created with hope can acquire a strange emotional weight. knew.

And somewhere above the Rockies, I was sitting between my two daughters while the same possibility was taking shape in my mind.

Emma had fallen asleep.

Chloe watched a movie without really watching it.

I opened the gray folder.

The storage records were arranged chronologically.

Payments.

Dates.

Corporate account numbers.

Embryo identification codes.

At the bottom sat the destruction letter Carter had given me years earlier.

For the first time, I studied the signature rather than the words.

Something was wrong.

I pulled out my phone and searched my saved photographs.

Months earlier, my attorney had photographed several genuine Oakfield documents from our original IVF treatment.

I enlarged one.

The clinic administrator's signature looked different.

Not dramatically.

Enough.

My stomach turned.

The letter had been forged.

Carter hadn't simply hidden continued storage.

He had manufactured proof to make me stop asking.

I turned toward the airplane window.

Clouds stretched beneath us like an endless white field.

I should have felt trapped.

Instead, I felt something colder and more useful.

Clarity.

Carter had wanted me gone.

He had wanted the girls gone.

And for years, someone had been protecting that male embryo.

The question was no longer whether Carter had lied.

The question was how far he had gone to turn that lie into a son.
