Around us, attorneys moved through the corridor with rolling cases and paper cups of coffee. A clerk laughed behind a half-open door. Somewhere downstairs, the security scanner chirped again and again.

Carter stood beside a marble column, straightening the cuff of his charcoal suit as if we had just finished an inconvenient business meeting.

“Take the girls,” he said.

For a moment, I thought I had misheard him.

“What?”

“Chloe and Emma. Take them with you.” His voice stayed low because Carter had always cared about appearances. “I have a son coming now.”

There are sentences so cruel that your mind refuses to absorb them immediately. His words seemed to hang between us while everything else—the footsteps, the elevator bell, the attorneys talking—became strangely distant.

I stared at the man I had been married to for eleven years.

Carter was thirty-nine, polished, wealthy, and almost unnervingly good at making selfishness sound reasonable. During our marriage, people had mistaken his composure for kindness. I had done the same thing for far too long.

“You're talking about your daughters,” I said.

“I know who I'm talking about.”

That answer hurt more than the first one.

Chloe was eight. She had Carter's dark eyes and my habit of biting the inside of her cheek when she was concentrating. Emma was five, fearless until thunderstorms arrived, when she still climbed into my bed clutching the stuffed rabbit she'd owned since infancy.

Neither girl knew that their father had just dismissed them like furniture he no longer wanted after the divorce.

I tightened my fingers around the envelope.

“Does Jessica know you're saying this?”

His expression changed slightly.

That was confirmation enough.

Jessica Hale was the woman Carter had insisted was merely a colleague until I found enough evidence to stop asking questions whose answers I already knew. She was pregnant now. According to Carter, the baby was a boy.

The Sterling family had reacted as though someone had announced the arrival of royalty.

Carter's father, Richard, had spent decades talking about legacy. The family business had passed from father to son for generations, and Richard treated that pattern less like tradition than natural law. Chloe and Emma had been welcomed when they were born, photographed extensively, dressed beautifully, and gradually regarded as disappointments.

Not by me.

Never by me.

But I had watched Margaret, Carter's mother, become cooler after Emma's birth. I had heard Richard make jokes about Carter needing “one more try.” I had seen my husband laugh instead of defending our daughters.

Back then, I told myself he was avoiding conflict.

Standing in that courthouse corridor, I finally understood that he had agreed with them.

“You've spent the last year fighting me over custody,” I said. “Your attorney argued that the girls needed equal time with you.”

“That was before circumstances changed.”

“Children aren't circumstances.”

His jaw tightened.

“Lauren, don't turn this into something dramatic.”

I almost laughed.

Our marriage had ended partly because Carter could betray someone and then complain about the inconvenience of their reaction.

“You're right,” I said. “There's nothing left to argue about.”

He seemed surprised by that.

Perhaps he'd expected tears. Maybe he wanted anger because anger would have allowed him to tell himself I was unstable.

Instead, I opened my handbag, removed my phone, and checked the time.

10:23.

My flight to Seattle departed at 2:40.

I had booked three seats.

Carter didn't know that.

Seattle wasn't an impulsive escape. For six weeks, I had quietly prepared for the possibility that the divorce would end exactly as it had. My older sister, Rachel, lived outside the city. I had already accepted a position with a medical technology firm there, and my attorney had handled the necessary relocation arrangements.

What Carter did not know was that I had another reason for leaving quickly.

A gray folder waited inside my carry-on bag.

Its contents had nothing to do with custody of Chloe and Emma.

At least, that was what I had believed that morning.

“I'm picking them up from school,” I said.

“Fine.”

“You won't come?”

Carter glanced at his watch.

“No. Jessica has an appointment.”

Of course she did.

“The ultrasound?”

He looked faintly irritated that I knew.

“My parents are coming too.”

Something about the way he said it made my stomach tighten.

Not because his family was attending.

Because Carter sounded proud.

This was not merely an ultrasound. It was a ceremony.

Richard Sterling was going to see his grandson.

Margaret was probably carrying some expensive blue blanket she'd had monogrammed before the child had even been born.

And my daughters' father was choosing that gathering over saying goodbye to them.

I slipped my phone back into my bag.

“Then go.”

Carter studied me.

“That's it?”

“What were you expecting?”

“I don't know.”

“Yes, you do.”

For the first time, he looked uncomfortable.

I walked toward the elevator.

“Lauren.”

I stopped but didn't turn.

“You'll tell the girls something appropriate?”

That nearly broke my composure.

I looked over my shoulder.

“I'll tell them their father had somewhere else he wanted to be.”

His face hardened.

“That isn't fair.”

“No,” I said. “It isn't.”

The elevator doors opened.

I stepped inside alone.

By noon, Chloe and Emma were sitting in the back of my rental SUV with their backpacks wedged between them.

Chloe understood immediately that something unusual was happening.

“Why did you get us early?”

“We have a flight.”

Emma's face brightened. “Vacation?”

“Not exactly.”

“Where?”

“Seattle.”

Chloe leaned forward between the seats.

“Aunt Rachel?”

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

I looked at her in the rearview mirror.

She was too perceptive for comforting lies.

“We're going to live there for a while.”

Her face changed.

“What about Dad?”

I gripped the steering wheel.

There would be time for truth.
