was addressed to me but never delivered.

Sloan, if ESV survives me, do not assume its purpose makes every act taken through it honorable.

I closed my eyes.

Again.

He had anticipated the exact mistake everyone made.

A structure built for protection could still become predatory.

Good purpose did not purify bad method.

The letter continued.

If the acquisition trust ever relies on secrecy from those whose rights it affects, suspend it.

That clause aligned with my protector authority.

Grandpa didn't simply give me power to remove a conflicted trustee.

He gave a principle for when to use it.

“Why didn't Martin send me this?”

Sarah answered.

“Because he believed Beatrice controlled your communications.”

“Then after she didn't?”

“He died before he found a safe route.”

Everyone died leaving paper behind.

Grandpa.

Michael.

Martin.

The living inherited their unfinished courage.

Marlowe asked Sarah about Pike's forged trustee appointment.

“Can you prove Martin's signature was false?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Sarah produced a forensic handwriting report Martin commissioned privately.

Conclusion:

The signature was mechanically reproduced from a prior letter.

Not handwritten.

“Why didn't he use this?”

“Because Pike threatened to expose the ESV filing misconduct.”

“Would Martin really sacrifice control of ten million dollars to protect his reputation?”

Sarah's face tightened.

“He told himself he was preserving ESV while searching for another solution.”

Same story.

“He died without finding one.”

“Yes.”

“How did Pike know Martin wouldn't expose him?”

“Because Pike understood shame.”

That sentence stayed with me.

Not greed.

Not fear.

Shame.

Another kind of leverage.

Marlowe immediately moved to freeze Pike's trustee authority based on suspected forged appointment.

Swiss counsel was notified.

Pike responded within an hour through attorneys.

He denied forgery.

Claimed Martin voluntarily appointed him.

Claimed the handwriting report was biased.

Claimed the stolen seal allegation was unsupported.

All predictable.

Then Sarah produced the strongest piece.

An audio recording.

Martin and Pike.

Dated one week after the disputed appointment.

Pike's voice:

You signed what needed signing.

Martin:

I did not sign that amendment.

Pike:

You authorized succession.

Martin:

Not to you.

Pike:

Then prove the difference without explaining ESV.

Silence.

Then Martin:

You stole my seal.

Pike:

Be careful.

Martin:

You stole it.

Pike:

And you concealed a trust from a beneficiary family while purchasing distressed rights with informational advantage. Which story do you think regulators will prefer?

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

Pike had practically admitted leverage.

Not the seal theft directly.

But enough to make his story much harder.

“What happens if Pike's appointment is invalid?” I asked Evelyn.

“His actions as trustee become at Sarah.

“What did Martin want me to do about ESV?”

She opened the final page.

Not preserve it.

Not destroy it.

Review every
