nodded.

“Likely.”

They had used a genuine family transfer as cover.

Money moved for an apparently reasonable reason.

At the same time, identity controls changed.

No one looking casually would separate the two.

That was the genius of the whole system.

Never invent an entirely fake event if a real one could carry the fraud inside it.

“What else happened that day?”

Priya searched.

A Sterling employee certified the beneficiary update.

Martin Alvarez.

The retired compliance officer.

The man behind Alvarez Strategic Services.

The one paid from my trust.

Marlowe had just received his attorney's response.

He wanted immunity consideration before speaking.

“He knows,” I said.

“Probably,” Marlowe replied.

“Can you give immunity?”

“Prosecutors decide.”

“Will they?”

“If his information is valuable enough.”

I stared at the transaction sequence.

Dad.

Alvarez.

Kessler.

Mom's recovery number.

Chloe's business.

My trust.

One day.

One coordinated operation.

“Did Mom know?”

We asked.

She joined by video.

Priya showed her the records.

Mom went silent.

That silence was different.

Not guilt.

Surprise.

“You didn't know.”

“No.”

“Dad did this without you.”

“Yes.”

“Kessler too.”

“Yes.”

“Alvarez?”

“I barely knew him.”

For once, Mom was outside the operation.

“How does that feel?”

Her eyes met mine.

“Like what I've done to everyone else.”

The answer surprised me.

I let it sit.

“What did Kessler gain by changing the recovery profile then?”

Mom thought.

“That was when Sloan's first major Havenport approval came due.”

“What approval?”

Judith found it.

A renewal agreement for three participation pools.

Without approval, the rights could have expired.

My consent was required.

I had never heard of it.

“Was it renewed?”

“Yes.”

“Using my profile.”

“Yes.”

“Was the renewal beneficial?”

Judith hesitated.

Financially?

“Yes.”

Those rights later became extremely valuable.

I almost laughed.

So one of the unauthorized decisions made in my name had actually enriched me.

That complicated nothing morally.

But everything legally.

“If I challenge all unauthorized actions, could that renewal be invalidated?”

Evelyn answered.

“Potentially.”

“And I could lose rights created by fraud.”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

Judith calculated.

Potentially several million in current value.

There it was.

The accounting was no longer only about getting money back.

It might require giving some up.

If I wanted the system corrected, I could not simply keep every favorable result and reject every harmful one.

Evelyn watched me.

“Now you understand the hard part.”

I nodded.

“Integrity is expensive.”

Priya corrected gently.

“Accuracy can be.”

I looked at the renewal.

A fraudulent process.

A beneficial outcome.

What would Grandpa have wanted?

I already knew the answer.

Not because he told me.

Because he built a system that assumed consent mattered even when experts believed they knew better.

“I want every unauthorized act identified,” I said.

Evelyn nodded.

“Even if unwinding it costs me.”

“Yes.”

Priya marked the instruction.

Mom watched through the screen.

There was something strange in her expression.

Pride, maybe.

If so, I didn't want it.

Not yet.

Then Marlowe entered with an update from prosecutors.

Martin Alvarez had agreed to a proffer.

He would speak that afternoon.

One condition.

“What?”

“He wants to speak with you present.”

I frowned.

“Why me?”

Marlowe looked at the note.

“He says because you are the only person whose signature he certified without ever meeting.”

The line made my stomach turn.

“How many times?”

“He hasn't said yet.”

But if Alvarez was telling the truth, the man who helped make my false authority look legitimate was finally ready to explain how often Sterling had knowingly treated a person it never met as having consented.

Click here to continue reading: PART 26: The Compliance Officer Who Certified My Fake
