He likely knew pressure was coming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho warned him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cross answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRaymond.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKessler contacted Pike before arrest?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEncrypted channel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you have access?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMargaret?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdrian?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLaura?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unlikely.<\/p>\n<p>Cross leaned back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPike never trusted family members.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe trusted Kessler?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe trusted leverage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That phrase could have been the title of the whole mess.<\/p>\n<p>Marlowe&#39;s team began international coordination.<\/p>\n<p>Then Cross said, \u201cThere is another reason Havenport mattered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course there is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His expression did not change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe settlement rights are not only valuable for distributions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey carry inspection rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Judith entered the room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnderlying settlement documentation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHavenport can audit origin records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked between them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy does that matter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Judith answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Northstar acquires enough Havenport rights, it can legally inspect confidential settlement files tied to certain pools.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cross leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of those files identify claimants, counterparties, valuations, and future obligations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInformation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorth money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA great deal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Suddenly the trust really wasn&#39;t the asset.<\/p>\n<p>The payments weren&#39;t the only asset either.<\/p>\n<p>The rights carried information.<\/p>\n<p>Information about future settlements.<\/p>\n<p>Potential acquisitions.<\/p>\n<p>Liabilities.<\/p>\n<p>Possibly enough to trade on or exploit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Northstar use that information?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cross hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor investments?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlowe&#39;s expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaterial nonpublic information?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn some cases.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This wasn&#39;t only fiduciary fraud.<\/p>\n<p>Potential securities violations.<\/p>\n<p>Insider trading.<\/p>\n<p>Corporate espionage.<\/p>\n<p>The scale widened again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Kessler know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPike?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMargaret?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI doubt it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeatrice cared about preserving ownership. She never showed interest in external deal flow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For once, Mom&#39;s obsession had limits.<\/p>\n<p>Still criminal.<\/p>\n<p>Just narrower.<\/p>\n<p>Cross continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPike wanted Havenport because its old contracts offered unusually broad inspection rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow broad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBroad enough to see settlement data before some disclosures became public.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen twenty-one million was almost secondary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the long term, yes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought of the anonymous message.<\/p>\n<p>THE TRUST WAS NEVER THE REAL ASSET.<\/p>\n<p>Laura had understood.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe from Michael&#39;s notes.<\/p>\n<p>The real asset was access.<\/p>\n<p>First identity access.<\/p>\n<p>Then bank access.<\/p>\n<p>Then information access.<\/p>\n<p>Every layer was about who could see and decide before everyone else.<\/p>\n<p>Marlowe asked Cross one final question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho at Sterling besides you knew Northstar used inspection rights this way?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cross looked down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKessler.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMargaret.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A long pause.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChief Legal Officer Nathan Bell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another current executive.<\/p>\n<p>Marlowe&#39;s team moved immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Bell&#39;s office was secured.<\/p>\n<p>His devices were preserved.<\/p>\n<p>He was located at home.<\/p>\n<p>He agreed to counsel.<\/p>\n<p>Before agents reached him, however, his corporate account sent an automated deletion command affecting archival correspondence.<\/p>\n<p>The bank&#39;s retention system blocked most of it.<\/p>\n<p>Most.<\/p>\n<p>Not all.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnother person trying to clean up,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Cross looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou still protect them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said maybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked tired.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause sometimes automated deletion is what it sounds like.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd sometimes it&#39;s a person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlowe received another update.<\/p>\n<p>Pike&#39;s travel had been traced beyond London.<\/p>\n<p>He boarded a private flight to Geneva.<\/p>\n<p>Swiss authorities were being contacted.<\/p>\n<p>Then my phone buzzed.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>The source had impeccable timing.<\/p>\n<p>A single message:<\/p>\n<p>PIKE DOESN&#39;T OWN PALISADE.<\/p>\n<p>I showed Marlowe.<\/p>\n<p>Another followed.<\/p>\n<p>ASK WHO FUNDED IT IN 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Cross went still when he saw the year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho funded Palisade?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face changed.<\/p>\n<p>Not fear.<\/p>\n<p>Recognition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. But I know who put money into Northstar in 2014.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Vale Family Preservation Trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n<p>Mom&#39;s structure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur family funded the entity later used to take our rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cross nodded slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFive million.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAuthorized by?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked toward the evidence file.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe Beatrice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course.<\/p>\n<p>Mom had not merely worked with Kessler.<\/p>\n<p>She had capitalized part of the machine.<\/p>\n<p>Whether she understood what it would become was another question.<\/p>\n<p>But the money began inside the very trust she claimed to protect.<\/p>\n<p>The system had fed the predator that later trapped it.<\/p>\n<p>I thought I had reached the bottom of my mother&#39;s choices several times.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently I had only reached different floors.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=27671\">Click here to continue reading: PART 24: My Mother Admitted Funding Northstar, but the Reason She Did It Revealed Grandpa\u2019s Trust Had Been Under Attack From the Start<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Daniel Cross was sixty-one, trim, silver-haired, and so composed that I understood immediately how he&#39;d spent years leading a bank through crises.
