leverage.<\/p>\n<p>Six million dollars worth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happens on default?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Adrian read.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNorthstar may acquire the pledged eight percent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Kessler legitimately gets eight?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPotentially.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret snapped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe loan agreement contains fraud.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat fraud?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe valuation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou signed it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe lied about the value of the collateral.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Another person who thought deception became intolerable only once it turned against them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is the eight percent worth now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Judith calculated from the participation estimates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPotentially far more than six million.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDepending on pending settlements, maybe fifteen to eighteen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret looked sick.<\/p>\n<p>Now Kessler&#39;s strategy became clearer.<\/p>\n<p>Take the Q4 distribution.<\/p>\n<p>Acquire Margaret&#39;s pledged interest.<\/p>\n<p>Use forged continuity to challenge my trust.<\/p>\n<p>He wasn&#39;t stealing one payment.<\/p>\n<p>He was consolidating ownership.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas the twenty-six-million-dollar transfer part of that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adrian nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKessler intended to move a larger block into Northstar, including disputed rights and pledged interests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlowe&#39;s phone buzzed.<\/p>\n<p>She read the message.<\/p>\n<p>Then looked at Margaret.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour sister has been located.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret&#39;s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt your house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said she drove me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe says you took her SUV without permission.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret stared.<\/p>\n<p>Marlowe continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe hasn&#39;t seen you in three days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went silent.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Margaret.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn&#39;t leave Maryland in your sister&#39;s car.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen whose SUV did Adrian get into?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adrian&#39;s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret turned toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI assumed you arranged transportation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought you did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlowe stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened to the protection agents?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adrian looked confused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told you.
