Dad said he was going for a scan with an orderly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlowe was already listening.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere would he go?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he take his phone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, but he&#39;s not answering.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlowe ordered an immediate locate.<\/p>\n<p>Mom&#39;s face on the screen had gone white.<\/p>\n<p>Not metaphorically.<\/p>\n<p>All color disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>She looked terrified.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSloan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father knows where Raymond keeps the private access key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went silent.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said Dad didn&#39;t understand the system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn&#39;t understand all of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does he know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYears ago, Raymond gave him something to hold for emergencies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA hardware token.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlowe stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdministrator token?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy Thomas?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Raymond believed nobody would suspect him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My anger arrived so fast I barely felt it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you knew?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEventually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Dad know what it did?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot originally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOriginally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom opened her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told him three years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My father&#39;s frightened question about Adrian.<\/p>\n<p>His half-truths.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting he remembered.<\/p>\n<p>The man in the dining room.<\/p>\n<p>He had known more than he admitted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is the token?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat can it do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Raymond still has the paired credential\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat can it do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt can validate an offline transfer instruction without using Sterling&#39;s live authentication.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlowe swore quietly.<\/p>\n<p>The distribution.<\/p>\n<p>If Kessler couldn&#39;t take it through the electronic successor route, he might use an older, offline path.<\/p>\n<p>I thought of Dad leaving the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would Dad help him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>That silence terrified me more than an answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice barely carried through the speaker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Raymond has been paying him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everything stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe&#39;s words from the hospital returned to me.<\/p>\n<p>Wrong and harmless.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had admitted signing forms he didn&#39;t read.<\/p>\n<p>He had claimed Mom controlled the money.<\/p>\n<p>He had presented himself as passive.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe passivity had been another family story.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTen years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat back down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeeping quiet. Holding documents.
