His badge and corporate phone were found in his office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo he&#39;s running.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don&#39;t characterize it until we know more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had learned by then that Marlowe&#39;s restraint was not indecision. It was discipline.<\/p>\n<p>I asked Adrian, \u201cWould Kessler know about the room?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWould Mom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbsolutely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid ever accompany her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout seven years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI stayed Several empty shelving bays. Boxes opened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKessler beat us there,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>She didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>The agent continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have one secured cabinet still intact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy intact?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMechanical lock. Heavy steel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cForce it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorking on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another twenty minutes.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the darkening trees until they blurred.<\/p>\n<p>Then the radio clicked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCabinet open.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlowe grabbed the handset.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you find?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBound trust instruments. Corporate ledgers. Original signatures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Relief came too early.<\/p>\n<p>The agent wasn&#39;t finished.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd an envelope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSloan Langley.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chloe turned toward me.<\/p>\n<p>My mouth went dry.<\/p>\n<p>Marlowe asked, \u201cHandwritten?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSignature appears to be Edmund Vale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My grandfather.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#39;t realize I&#39;d whispered his name until Chloe reached for my hand.<\/p>\n<p>The envelope had apparently been sitting inside a steel cabinet beneath a house I believed had been sold, waiting through eleven years of lies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it say?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Marlowe looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey won&#39;t open it until it&#39;s documented.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to scream.<\/p>\n<p>Another voice came over the radio.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAgent Marlowe, we found something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBlood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everything inside me stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFresh?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAppears recent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmount?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSmall. Smear near the rear stairwell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKessler?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnknown.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny injured person on site?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNegative.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlowe began issuing orders.<\/p>\n<p>Photograph. Sample. Search perimeter. Notify local hospitals.
