officer.”

“Name?”

She hesitated.

Then said it.

“David Mercer.”

For a moment I didn't recognize it.

Then I did.

The bank employee who had called me that morning.

The man who had shown me the fraudulent application.

The man who had locked his office door and helped me escalate the case.

“No.”

Marlowe didn't respond.

“David found the fraud.”

“Yes.”

“He called security.”

“Yes.”

“He told me about the administrator field.”

“Yes.”

“Then why is his name on the transfer?”

“We don't know.”

I thought back through every moment.

His careful pauses.

His surprise when he saw ACCOUNT ADMINISTRATOR.

The way he had said that shouldn't be possible.

Maybe it had been real surprise.

Maybe it hadn't.

My phone vibrated again.

Unknown number.

Marlowe held out her hand before I opened it.

I gave her the phone.

She read the message aloud.

DAVID DIDN'T AUTHORIZE IT EITHER.

A second message arrived immediately.

CHECK WHO CREATED HIS EMPLOYEE TOKEN.

Marlowe's expression sharpened.

She called Sterling.

This time the response took several minutes.

We waited in a silence so complete I could hear Dad's monitor through the wall.

Then she lowered the phone.

“The employee token used under David's name was created eleven years ago.”

“By whom?”

She looked at me.

“Raymond Kessler.”

Adrian sat back.

Nobody spoke.

I looked at the photograph from 2009 again.

My mother.

Adrian.

Kessler.

Three people smiling in front of Commonwealth.

One had been pushed out.

One had spent years controlling the family.

And one had remained inside the bank.

The twenty-six-million-dollar transfer was scheduled for tomorrow.

My mother's arrest had exposed it.

Kessler had vanished.

And someone anonymous was feeding me just enough information to keep us moving.

Marlowe closed her laptop.

“We have to assume Kessler knows the transfer is compromised.”

“What happens if he cancels it?”

“We preserve evidence.”

“And if he doesn't?”

“We stop it.”

I looked at Adrian's image on the darkening screen.

“No.”

Marlowe paused.

“What?”

“If he spent twelve years building toward tomorrow, cancelling the transfer isn't the only thing he'll care about.”

She watched me.

“The participation rights.”

“Yes.”

“If he can't take them through Northstar, he'll try another route.”

Marlowe nodded slowly.

“That's possible.”

I looked at the photograph one more time.

“Then we stop treating tomorrow's transfer as the end of the plan.”

“What do you think it is?”

“The part we were supposed to notice too late.”

Outside the room, agents began moving quickly down the hallway.

My phone buzzed once more.

Another message from the unknown sender.

This one contained only an address.

Underneath it:

KESSLER WON'T GO HOME.

HE'LL GO WHERE THE ORIGINALS ARE.

I showed Marlowe.

Her face changed.

“Do you know that address?”

“No.”

Adrian did.

His voice came through the laptop before the connection fully closed.

“I do.”

We all turned toward the screen.

His face had gone pale.

“That's your grandparents' old lake house.”

I stared at him.

“That property was sold years ago.”

“No,” Adrian said.

“Your mother only told you it was.”

And with that, the family property I'd believed had vanished after my grandmother's death became the next place Raymond Kessler might already be searching for the records capable of proving how everything had begun.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: The Lake House Was Never Sold, and the
