Verification pathways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse increased.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad, this was about the trust network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were sitting in the room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought it was estate administration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat company did he work for?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad rubbed his temple.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was a logo on his folder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat logo?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA circle with a vertical line.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlowe&#39;s expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou recognize it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She didn&#39;t answer immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Then she said, \u201cAn old Sterling predecessor used a similar mark.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat predecessor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCommonwealth Fiduciary Services.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad snapped his fingers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlowe stepped into the hallway and began making another call.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is Commonwealth Fiduciary?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad did.<\/p>\n<p>His face told me before he spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour grandfather used them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the trusts?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd they were acquired by Sterling?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEventually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A cold understanding began assembling itself.<\/p>\n<p>Mom hadn&#39;t randomly found old bank permissions.<\/p>\n<p>The family trust had been built through a company that later became part of Sterling&#39;s system.<\/p>\n<p>Her access wasn&#39;t an accident she discovered afterward.<\/p>\n<p>It had grown from the original architecture.<\/p>\n<p>Marlowe returned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCommonwealth was acquired fourteen years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore Grandma died,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho worked on the migration?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;re pulling personnel records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow many people?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPotentially hundreds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you narrow it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can try.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe man&#39;s first name may have been Raymond.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlowe stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re sure?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeatrice called him Ray once.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlowe typed it into her phone.<\/p>\n<p>Several minutes passed.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Then her phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>She answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>Her face hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSend me the file.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImmediately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was a senior systems architect at Commonwealth named Raymond Kessler.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad&#39;s eyes widened slightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s familiar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is he now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlowe looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSterling Bank.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat position?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExecutive vice president for legacy-platform integration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chloe whispered, \u201cYou&#39;ve got to be kidding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost wished she were.<\/p>\n<p>Marlowe&#39;s phone buzzed with the file.<\/p>\n<p>She opened a photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Dad leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No hesitation.<\/p>\n<p>Marlowe looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRaymond Kessler has been at Sterling for nineteen years through acquisitions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd he could have internal access.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPotentially significant access.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas he at the branch today?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;re checking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mind returned to the threatening call.<\/p>\n<p>The administrator session.<\/p>\n<p>The old compliance architecture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes he know Mom is in custody?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlmost certainly by now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen he knows the network is exposed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad suddenly grabbed the bed rail.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was another meeting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYears later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith Kessler?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know if it was him. Beatrice met someone after Sloan turned thirty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe year my veto activated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked sick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marlowe asked, \u201cWhat do you remember?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeatrice told me she was fixing a beneficiary-trigger problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFixing me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>Marlowe&#39;s phone rang again.<\/p>\n<p>She listened.<\/p>\n<p>Then all color left her expression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked directly at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRaymond Kessler isn&#39;t at Sterling headquarters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe left forty minutes ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter the administrator session?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he use his badge?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe exited through a parking garage gate using a manual override.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chloe stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you find him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;re trying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My phone vibrated.<\/p>\n<p>A text message.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>I opened it.<\/p>\n<p>Three words appeared.<\/p>\n<p>ASK ABOUT 2009.<\/p>\n<p>Below them was a photograph.<\/p>\n<p>My mother.<\/p>\n<p>Raymond Kessler.<\/p>\n<p>Adrian.<\/p>\n<p>All three standing together outside Commonwealth Fiduciary Services.<\/p>\n<p>The timestamp printed along the bottom read May 18, 2009.<\/p>\n<p>I handed the phone to Marlowe.<\/p>\n<p>She stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho sent this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A second message arrived.<\/p>\n<p>This one contained no photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Only a sentence.<\/p>\n<p>THE TRUST WAS NEVER THE REAL ASSET.<\/p>\n<p>I felt the blood leave my face.<\/p>\n<p>Marlowe immediately called for a trace.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the words.<\/p>\n<p>If the trust wasn&#39;t the asset, then the millions flowing through it were not the beginning.<\/p>\n<p>They were evidence of something larger.<\/p>\n<p>And somebody outside our family wanted me to understand that before Raymond Kessler found whatever he had just left Sterling to protect.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=27655\">Click here to continue reading: PART 8: A Photograph From 2009 Revealed My Mother, Adrian, and Sterling\u2019s Executive Had Once Been Partners in Something Far Larger<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Agent Marlowe ended the video call with Adrian only after confirming agents were being sent to his address.
