studied me.

“What do you think it was?”

I looked at the diagram.

“A test.”

“Of what?”

“Whether she could still get through me.”

Marlowe nodded slightly.

“That is consistent with what we're seeing.”

I looked again at Chloe's name branching from mine.

My sister had participated in fraud against me.

That remained true.

But another truth was forming beside it.

Chloe had believed she was exploiting my credit.

She hadn't realized she was also being used to test a system our mother had built around both of us.

“Where is my mother?”

“In custody pending interview and further review.”

“Has she asked for a lawyer?”

“Yes.”

That sounded like her.

“What about my father?”

“Being interviewed separately.”

“Chloe?”

“The same.”

I sat back.

At seven that morning, I'd believed someone had tried to steal a hundred thousand dollars using my name.

By noon, that problem seemed almost simple.

Money could be traced.

Applications could be canceled.

Credit could be repaired.

What sat on the table in front of me was different.

Someone had taken the architecture of my adult life—my reliability, my work history, my accounts, my identity—and quietly turned it into scaffolding for other people.

I touched the center of the diagram.

“If you shut all of this down, what happens?”

Marlowe looked at the page.

“You don't simply lose accounts.”

“What do I lose?”

“Every structure that depends on your identity continuing to function the way your mother designed it.”

“And if we don't shut it down?”

“Then you remain the anchor of a system you never agreed to support.”

Neither option sounded like freedom.

I withdrew my hand.

“So what happens now?”

Marlowe looked at me for a long moment.

“Now we determine what this system was actually designed to protect.”

She tapped my name.

“Because your mother claims she built it to protect you.”

“And you don't believe her?”

“I don't decide cases by believing people.”

“Then what do you think?”

“I think we need to determine whether the network protected you.”

Her finger moved along one of the lines leading outward.

“Or whether it protected itself by making sure everything depended on you.”

I stared at the page.

My name remained in the center.

Every line led somewhere I hadn't chosen.

Every branch represented a decision somebody else had made.

For the first time since the bank called, I stopped thinking about what my family had taken from me.

A harder question had replaced it.

What had they built around me while I was busy believing my life was entirely my own?

I closed the folder.

“When do we start?”

Marlowe stood.

“We already have.”

Then she opened the door and asked an analyst waiting outside to bring in the historical trust records.

The analyst hesitated.

“There are more than we expected.”

“How many?”

He looked at me before answering.

“Enough that we found another anchor.”

I froze.

Marlowe turned toward him.

“Whose?”

The analyst placed a second folder on the table.

I looked at the name printed on its tab.

And recognized it immediately.

It belonged to someone my mother had spent years insisting had absolutely nothing to do with our family anymore.

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: The Second Anchor Belonged to the Uncle My Mother Had Erased
