Her cameraman was already recording families carrying donated blankets through the corridor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;re keeping this focused on the community response,\u201d she told me. \u201cNo residents&#39; faces without permission.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Miriam pointed at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire can explain what happened tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost corrected her.<\/p>\n<p>I could explain what happened at Safe Harbor.<\/p>\n<p>What had happened in my marriage was becoming less clear by the minute.<\/p>\n<p>Nina positioned me near the dining room entrance. Behind us, volunteers moved trays across long folding tables. Someone had taped construction-paper snowflakes to the walls. Children ran between adults wearing paper crowns.<\/p>\n<p>The cameraman adjusted his lens.<\/p>\n<p>Nina asked how the shelter had handled the unexpected arrivals.<\/p>\n<p>I answered automatically at first.<\/p>\n<p>Then something shifted.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe it was the sight of a little boy carrying two dinner plates because his mother had a baby in her arms. They showed you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That explained David&#39;s calls.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said you planned it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlanned what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoing on television to embarrass him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid the reporter mention David?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid I?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen how exactly did I embarrass him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chloe did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>Behind her, voices rose.<\/p>\n<p>One was David&#39;s.<\/p>\n<p>The other was female.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is your father showing everyone?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBank statements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom which account?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTake pictures if you can do it without starting a fight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI already did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Three images arrived.<\/p>\n<p>I opened the first.<\/p>\n<p>The document appeared to be a statement from the bank where David and I kept our joint savings.<\/p>\n<p>My name was printed at the top.<\/p>\n<p>So was his.<\/p>\n<p>Several transactions had been highlighted.<\/p>\n<p>Four transfers.<\/p>\n<p>Together, they totaled $52,400.<\/p>\n<p>The listed recipient was Safe Harbor.<\/p>\n<p>I read the page twice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn&#39;t right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never transferred that money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad says you did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another voice came through the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive me that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then David was speaking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His tone was controlled, but I could hear strain underneath it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTalking to Chloe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know what I mean.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, David. I don&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re on television.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI volunteered at a shelter on Christmas Eve. A local reporter covered the shelter. Those events are connected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew Sarah would see it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was such an irrational accusation that I stopped trying to answer it.<\/p>\n<p>Instead I asked, \u201cWhy are there bank statements with my name on them sitting on our dining table?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Only a second.<\/p>\n<p>But enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome home,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to talk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe needed to talk before you asked me to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire, this is getting out of hand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid I transfer $52,400 to Safe Harbor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His breathing changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think you should come home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn&#39;t an answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere&#39;s context.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat context could possibly make me forget transferring fifty-two thousand dollars?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He lowered his voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re upset.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was again.<\/p>\n<p>Not an answer.<\/p>\n<p>A description of my emotional state.<\/p>\n<p>I sat down on a metal stool beside the kitchen counter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPut Sarah on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis has nothing to do with her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou invited her into my house and showed her financial records accusing me of taking money. It has quite a lot to do with her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He hung up.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the screen.<\/p>\n<p>Miriam entered carrying a tray.<\/p>\n<p>She took one look at me and set it down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I showed her the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>She read it carefully.<\/p>\n<p>Then again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSafe Harbor never got this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire, I would know about a fifty-two-thousand-dollar donation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She tapped the paper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen where did this come from?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is what I intend to find out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang again.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan.<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice sounded different from Chloe&#39;s. Less frightened. More angry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you steal Dad&#39;s money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says you transferred it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has statements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;ve seen photographs of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you&#39;re saying they&#39;re fake?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m saying I did not make those transfers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan breathed heavily into the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would he fake bank statements?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was the worst part.<\/p>\n<p>If David had simply wanted a divorce, he could have asked for one.<\/p>\n<p>If he had fallen back in love with Sarah, he could have told me.<\/p>\n<p>Neither possibility required fabricated financial evidence.<\/p>\n<p>Something else was happening.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEthan,\u201d I said, \u201cwhat exactly has your father told you about me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTonight?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot just tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hand tightened around the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA few months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The kitchen seemed to recede.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat has he been saying?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat you two were having problems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat part is true lately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said it was worse than we knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said you were hiding money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Miriam.<\/p>\n<p>She was watching my face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said you were getting&#8230; I don&#39;t know. Unstable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word struck harder than I expected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said you were trying to turn Chloe against Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have never done that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His answer came quickly.<\/p>\n<p>That mattered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes Chloe know all of this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Sarah?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad&#39;s been talking to her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor how long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I began walking toward the hallway because suddenly the kitchen felt too small.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the corridor, children were hanging paper ornaments from a plastic tree.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEthan, listen carefully. Don&#39;t argue with your father. Don&#39;t destroy anything. Don&#39;t let anybody throw those documents away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause if they&#39;re false, I need to know who made them and why.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He lowered his voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere&#39;s more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad has this whole folder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, I mean there are sections.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSections about what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoney. You and Mom. Chloe. The house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The house.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped walking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat&#39;s in the section about the house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know. Dad closed it when Chloe came over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not open it if doing so puts you in the middle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can handle Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn&#39;t about handling him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the first time that evening, I was genuinely afraid.<\/p>\n<p>Not because David had insulted me.<\/p>\n<p>Not because he had excluded me.<\/p>\n<p>Because somebody who merely wanted his wife gone did not usually prepare a categorized dossier before Christmas dinner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay with Chloe,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you going to do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the glass doors at the front of the shelter.<\/p>\n<p>Snow was falling harder now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m going to find out whether any of those bank transactions actually happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After we disconnected, I opened my banking app.<\/p>\n<p>My password failed.<\/p>\n<p>I tried again.<\/p>\n<p>Failed.<\/p>\n<p>A message appeared.<\/p>\n<p>ACCOUNT ACCESS TEMPORARILY LOCKED.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>Then my phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>David.<\/p>\n<p>I let it ring once.<\/p>\n<p>Twice.<\/p>\n<p>Three times.<\/p>\n<p>Finally I answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>His voice was no longer controlled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy are you on the news?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked down at the locked banking screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think,\u201d I said, \u201cyou have much more important things to explain.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=27642\">Click here to continue reading: PART 4: A Locked Bank Account and One Question From Sarah Turned Christmas Eve Into Something Far More Dangerous Than Betrayal<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The reporter&#39;s name was Nina Patel.
