A plumbing failure at another temporary housing facility had forced several families to relocate that afternoon. Volunteers were assembling folding beds. Children were coloring paper ornaments in the recreation room. Someone had burned the first batch of dinner rolls.

For the next hour, I chopped vegetables, carried trays, and stopped thinking about David every thirty seconds.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from Chloe.

Mom is here.

Thirty seconds later, another arrived.

Dad has papers all over the dining table.

I stared at the screen.

What papers?

The typing indicator appeared.

Disappeared.

Appeared again.

Finally:

Stuff about you.

My skin went cold.

Before I could respond, Miriam came through the kitchen doors.

“You're needed in the dining room.”

“Give me a minute.”

“Not optional.”

I looked up.

“Why?”

“Channel Eight showed up.”

I frowned.

“For what?”

“They're doing a Christmas Eve piece about the overflow families.
