I respected careful answers.

“What does the document actually say?”

Ortiz paused.

“Family Continuity — client interests: Brandon Whitmore, David Vance, related family stakeholders.”

I looked at Thomas.

“That sounds fairly direct.”

“It sounds concerning,” he said.

Not guilty.

Not exonerated.

Concerning.

“What date?”

“Approximately five months before Christmas.”

That placed David in the picture far earlier than the twenty-five-thousand-dollar payment.

Before my hospital stay.

Before the forged authorization.

Before assisted living.

Before any credible argument that I might need help.

“What was Family Continuity at that stage?”

Ortiz reminded us that the first version focused on financial restructuring, family coordination, and keeping assets under stable management if I resisted a plan to support Brandon.

No incapacity strategy yet.

No false medical record.

Just leverage.

“Was David aware of that?”

“That is what we need to establish.”

Thomas asked whether investigators had found communications between David and Darren from that period.

“Yes.”

My stomach tightened.

“What do they say?”

Ortiz could summarize.

David asked Darren for information about Brandon’s financial position.

That we knew.

But an earlier thread showed Darren asking David whether the trust could support “temporary family liquidity” without changing long-term circumstances under which family representatives could act without direct approval.”

The emergency provision.

“And David explained it?”

“Generally.”

My anger sharpened.

“When?”

Ortiz gave the date.

Before Martin had told Brandon.

Before Daniel.

Before my hospital.

David had already explained to Darren that an emergency structure existed.

“Did he name himself?”

“Yes.”

I stared at the table.

“So Darren learned the route from David.”

“That appears possible.”

Thomas leaned forward.

“Did David understand whom Darren was working for?”

“He knew Brandon was one interested party.”

My pulse rose.

“Then why would he explain anything?”

Ortiz did not you ask me?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because I knew what you would say.”

I stared at him.

“That sounds ask?”

“Partly.”

“Then you were already treating my answer as an obstacle.”

David looked toward his lawyer.

She did not intervene.

“Yes.”

My hands remained flat on the table.

“What was the other part?”

“I believed the request would create conflict before I understood whether it was financially viable.”

“So you wanted to study whether my money should save Brandon before bothering to ask whether I wanted to.”

“Yes.”

No euphemism.

At last.

“Where did Darren come in?”

“Brandon brought him into a meeting.”

“When?”

“August.”

“What did Darren propose?”

“A structured family liquidity plan.”

I almost laughed.

“Using my assets.”

“Potentially.”

“Without asking me.”

“At that stage, the idea was to develop options first.”

Options.

The word had become almost meaningless from overuse.

“What did you tell them?”

“That nothing could proceed without your informed consent.”

That mattered.

“Then why did Darren list you as a client interest?”

“Because I was the trust attorney and potential existed.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

David took a long breath.

“Because Darren asked every route by which temporary authority could exist.”

“And you answered?”

“In general terms.”

“Why?”

“Because I believed I was explaining legal boundaries, not designing a strategy.”

I looked at Thomas.

That distinction was possible.

But not sufficient.

“What did you say?”

David summarized.

The trust contained emergency provisions.

They required medical certification.

They were designed for genuine incapacity.

No child could simply declare me incompetent.

No financial crisis involving a beneficiary could trigger the mechanism.

All sound advice.

“Did Darren ask who would control the trust?”

“Yes.”

“And you said you would.”

“Yes.”

“Did Brandon know that conversation the map to Brandon.

Then Brandon began searching for a condition that would activate it.

“Did you realize that later?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“After Brandon started asking capacity questions.”

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

David’s face tightened.

“I was embarrassed.”

I almost laughed.

“Embarrassment has done more damage to this family than greed.”

No one disagreed.

“What else?”

“I thought I could contain it.”

Again.

Control.

Every man in this story believed he could manage dangerous information once released.

Robert.

Martin.

David.

Brandon.

Perhaps even Darren.

They all believed they would remain the person holding the steering wheel.

“What did you do when Brandon asked about incapacity?”

“I told him disagreement was not incapacity.”

“Then?”

“He kept asking.”

“Did you warn Darren?”

“Yes.”

“What did he say?”

“That Brandon was desperate but manageable.”

I almost laughed again.

“Manageable.”

David nodded bitterly.

“We were both
