the dark window.

“I used to think the opposite of love was anger.”

“What do you think now?”

“Maybe indifference.”

I was nowhere near indifferent.

That was why everything hurt.

Before Margaret left, she handed me an envelope.

“What is this?”

“From Martin.”

“I said no more apologies.”

“It isn't an apology.”

I opened it after she left.

Inside was a copy of a note Robert had once written on a restaurant napkin during dinner with Martin.

Apparently they had been arguing about inheritance.

Robert wrote:

If my kids only come home for what I leave them, I failed somewhere long before the will.

I sat at the kitchen table holding that napkin copy.

Robert had seen the danger.

Not clearly enough.

Not early enough.

But he had seen it.

The next morning, Thomas called.

“Eleanor, there’s been a development with the charitable reserve.”

I felt immediate alarm.

“What?”

“Nothing was taken.”

I exhaled.

“Then what?”

“Someone attempted to obtain information about it before Robert died.”

My stomach tightened.

“Brandon?”

“No.”

“Jessica?”

“No.”

“David?”

Thomas paused.

“The request came from Martin Hale.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 32: Martin’s Inquiry Into Robert’s Charitable
