Do not use the signature file for a deed.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>Darren had explicitly warned him.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Brandon reply?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wrote: Understood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen who put the signature on the deed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is the question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Darren told Natalie to prepare the signed scenario version.<\/p>\n<p>But his message to Brandon said not to use the signature.<\/p>\n<p>Contradiction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would Darren order it anyway?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are asking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says Natalie misunderstood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Natalie&#39;s lawyer said otherwise.<\/p>\n<p>Someone was lying.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, the investigation&#39;s focus shifted away from my children toward conflicts inside Darren&#39;s operation.<\/p>\n<p>That mattered.<\/p>\n<p>Responsibility might extend further than family.<\/p>\n<p>The next morning, Natalie requested to amend her statement.<\/p>\n<p>Her lawyer contacted investigators.<\/p>\n<p>By afternoon, Ortiz called.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat changed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNatalie says she did not misunderstand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse quickened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho told her to insert the signature?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDarren.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDirectly?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe says he told her Brandon wanted to see how the final document would look.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>A visual mock-up.<\/p>\n<p>With a forged signature.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Brandon ask Darren?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don&#39;t know yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Natalie had saved the instruction.<\/p>\n<p>A chat message.<\/p>\n<p>Use E.W. signature image from authorization folder. Internal draft only.<\/p>\n<p>Darren had ordered it.<\/p>\n<p>Even if never recorded, even if called internal, he knowingly created a completed-looking false deed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happens to him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is not something I can predict.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course.<\/p>\n<p>Then Ortiz added something important.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNatalie also says Darren became increasingly uncomfortable with Brandon in the week before Christmas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Brandon wanted to move faster than professional intermediaries would allow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Darren try to stop?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn some areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCorrect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>People were rarely one thing.<\/p>\n<p>Darren profited from the plan.<\/p>\n<p>Enabled it.<\/p>\n<p>Designed leverage.<\/p>\n<p>Helped with surveillance.<\/p>\n<p>But also warned Brandon against some steps.<\/p>\n<p>Then crossed other lines himself.<\/p>\n<p>Greed and caution coexisting.<\/p>\n<p>Not morality.<\/p>\n<p>Risk management.<\/p>\n<p>That evening, I received another letter from Brandon.<\/p>\n<p>One sentence stood out.<\/p>\n<p>Darren kept telling me which things were too risky, and I kept hearing that as instructions for how to make them less risky.<\/p>\n<p>I read it twice.<\/p>\n<p>That explained something.<\/p>\n<p>Warnings did not always stop determined people.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes they teach them where the obstacles are.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon had treated boundaries as technical problems.<\/p>\n<p>The gate was perhaps the first boundary he could not reinterpret.<\/p>\n<p>Red light.<\/p>\n<p>No access.<\/p>\n<p>Simple.<\/p>\n<p>He could not negotiate with a keypad.<\/p>\n<p>The next morning, Thomas arrived carrying an updated estate-plan summary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReady?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He walked me through everything.<\/p>\n<p>Independent fiduciaries.<\/p>\n<p>Medical safeguards.<\/p>\n<p>Protected charitable reserve.<\/p>\n<p>Education trusts.<\/p>\n<p>Restricted direct distributions where exploitation occurred.<\/p>\n<p>Clear provisions preventing any beneficiary from benefiting from coercive conduct.<\/p>\n<p>No automatic control for any child.<\/p>\n<p>Reporting requirements.<\/p>\n<p>Verification requirements.<\/p>\n<p>My house remaining mine unless I personally chose otherwise.<\/p>\n<p>I listened.<\/p>\n<p>Asked questions.<\/p>\n<p>Changed two clauses.<\/p>\n<p>Rejected one recommendation.<\/p>\n<p>Approved another.<\/p>\n<p>At the end, Thomas smiled slightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know what you&#39;re doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI always did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That answer mattered.<\/p>\n<p>I signed the revisions.<\/p>\n<p>Then Thomas placed one final page before me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOptional.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA personal statement to accompany the estate documents.
