Competitors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not estate surveillance.<\/p>\n<p>At least not initially.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Brandon mention Robert?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLater.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said Robert was trying to force him out of family investments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas that true?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you ask Robert?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t want to get between them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>He had already gotten between them.<\/p>\n<p>He just preferred doing it invisibly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartin, did you tell Brandon my estate could save him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you tell him he should expect his inheritance?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told him Robert intended to provide for all three children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is not the same thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you tell him the estate belonged to the family?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>The phrase.<\/p>\n<p>Not legally.<\/p>\n<p>Not literally.<\/p>\n<p>But philosophically.<\/p>\n<p>The idea Brandon repeated over and over.<\/p>\n<p>The estate is for the family.<\/p>\n<p>Dad built it for the family.<\/p>\n<p>Martin had reinforced that belief.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps he had helped create it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you understand what Brandon did with that idea?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. You understand pieces.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I told him about Christmas.<\/p>\n<p>Not confidential investigative details.<\/p>\n<p>Only what directly involved me.<\/p>\n<p>The fake email.<\/p>\n<p>The facility.<\/p>\n<p>The documents.<\/p>\n<p>The attempt to use my house.<\/p>\n<p>By the time I finished, Martin had stopped interrupting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe you didn&#39;t know all of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEleanor\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you knew enough to be careful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He had no answer.<\/p>\n<p>After the call, Thomas said, \u201cMartin may be a catalyst, not an architect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn&#39;t make me less angry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe gave Brandon confidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe gave him access to Darren.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe disclosed Robert&#39;s concerns.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd he told Brandon about the emergency provision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Robert&#39;s photograph.<\/p>\n<p>My husband&#39;s oldest friend had not stolen from us.<\/p>\n<p>He had done something harder to categorize.<\/p>\n<p>He had broken confidence because he believed he understood the family better than the people whose confidence he held.<\/p>\n<p>That evening Margaret called.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartin told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says you&#39;re furious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe deserves some of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That surprised me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven&#39;t heard everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told Brandon about Robert changing the trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret swore.<\/p>\n<p>I had rarely heard her do that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me he hadn&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe lied to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen he deserves more than some.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I smiled sadly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy are you apologizing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause this puts you in the middle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice became firm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not make the mistake everyone else has made.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat mistake?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThinking you need to manage how I feel about the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>She was right.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Martin broke Robert&#39;s confidence, that&#39;s between Martin and the consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed quietly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou make everything sound simple.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt usually is. People just add furniture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before we hung up, she said something that stayed with me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRobert loved Martin.
