Communications around your care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cForgery?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMedical access?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFake emails?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Whitmore, I&#39;m not going to debate allegations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen we&#39;re finished.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I hung up.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, I understood something important.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon was no longer talking like my son because he could no longer afford to.<\/p>\n<p>The story had moved into a world where words carried consequences.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica hired counsel the next day.<\/p>\n<p>David already had counsel.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa had counsel.<\/p>\n<p>Suddenly everyone who had insisted this was merely a family concern needed legal representation.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe called.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo I need a lawyer too?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou already have one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know. landed differently now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan I come see you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought about it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She arrived alone.<\/p>\n<p>This time she entered with slightly less hesitation.<\/p>\n<p>We drank tea.<\/p>\n<p>She did not ask about the investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, she told me about her revoked.<\/p>\n<p>Now someone was testing old ways back in.<\/p>\n<p>That evening, Aaron reviewed the security vendor&#39;s historical records.<\/p>\n<p>The installer credential had last been viewed in an old email archived in Robert&#39;s account.<\/p>\n<p>The same account Brandon had accessed.<\/p>\n<p>But another person had received the code too.<\/p>\n<p>Years earlier, when the system was installed, Robert forwarded it to David Vance for estate emergency records.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo either source could matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brandon.<\/p>\n<p>David.<\/p>\n<p>Or someone either of them told.<\/p>\n<p>Before we could pursue it, Detective Ortiz called again.<\/p>\n<p>Her voice was more serious this time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe identified the man at your gate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hand tightened around the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis name is Paul Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>He frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo relation,\u201d he said immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe does contract investigative work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says he was hired to document whether you were actually living alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I went cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho hired him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe gave us a company name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat company?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She told me.<\/p>\n<p>I had never heard it before.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas searched while Ortiz remained on the line.<\/p>\n<p>The company traced back
