This was stored in a restricted archive under Robert&#39;s client number.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy restricted?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s one of several questions David is going to have to answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He opened the portfolio.<\/p>\n<p>On the first folder, in Robert&#39;s handwriting, were five words.<\/p>\n<p>For Eleanor\u2014when the time is right.<\/p>\n<p>I touched the writing.<\/p>\n<p>For eighteen months, I had wanted one more conversation with my husband.<\/p>\n<p>Suddenly one was lying beneath my hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen did he write this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShortly before he died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas passed me an envelope.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a letter dated seven days before Robert&#39;s heart attack.<\/p>\n<p>The first line nearly stopped me.<\/p>\n<p>Robert wrote that he hoped his fears were misplaced.<\/p>\n<p>Then he described questions our children had been asking.<\/p>\n<p>Not questions about his health.<\/p>\n<p>Not questions about how I would cope without him.<\/p>\n<p>Questions about whether I could manage the estate.<\/p>\n<p>Questions about the house.<\/p>\n<p>The investments.<\/p>\n<p>The trust.<\/p>\n<p>And what authority they might acquire if Robert died first.<\/p>\n<p>I lowered the letter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe suspected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn&#39;t he tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeep reading.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert had written that he spent his working life ensuring I would never depend financially upon someone who failed to respect me.<\/p>\n<p>He wanted our children treated generously if they treated me with genuine love.<\/p>\n<p>But if money became the reason they remained close, he wanted me to protect myself.<\/p>\n<p>My eyes blurred.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped reading.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe always worried too much,\u201d I whispered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. He did. He checked every lock twice. Kept duplicate records. Planned for disasters that never happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas glanced toward the folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I continued.<\/p>\n<p>Attached to the letter were notes from a private meeting Robert had held approximately six months before his death.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica had apparently asked whether I could be persuaded to sell the house.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon wanted information about taking control of the investment portfolio.<\/p>\n<p>And Chloe\u2014<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>He let me read it.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe had copied household financial documents.<\/p>\n<p>I put the paper down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe gave them to Jessica?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd possibly Brandon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don&#39;t know yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood and walked toward the window.<\/p>\n<p>My garden was silver with frost.<\/p>\n<p>A cardinal landed on the stone birdbath Robert had installed after insisting birds needed \u201cproper architecture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I covered my mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Three children.<\/p>\n<p>Three people I had carried, raised, defended, financed, comforted.<\/p>\n<p>Robert had seen something in them that I had refused to see.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas came beside me but did not touch me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is another note.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He handed it over.<\/p>\n<p>Robert&#39;s final warning was short.<\/p>\n<p>If the three children ever arrived together to pressure me about the house, I should assume it was coordinated.<\/p>\n<p>I sat down so abruptly the chair scraped against the floor.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Three cars.<\/p>\n<p>Three children.<\/p>\n<p>One folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRobert knew this could happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe believed it might.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd David had this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn&#39;t he give it to me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas&#39;s expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;ve begun answering that too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He explained that David had been communicating privately with my children.<\/p>\n<p>They had apparently promised that if Brandon eventually assumed control of the family&#39;s investments, the assets would remain under David&#39;s firm.<\/p>\n<p>The amount of money involved made that arrangement extremely valuable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo David buried Robert&#39;s warning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is what the evidence presently suggests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt physically ill.<\/p>\n<p>A professional I had trusted had not merely failed to protect me.<\/p>\n<p>He may have helped preserve my children&#39;s access to me because my money benefited him.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas reached into his portfolio again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere&#39;s more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much more can there possibly be?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He slid a document across the table.<\/p>\n<p>At first, it looked ordinary.<\/p>\n<p>My name.<\/p>\n<p>Trust information.<\/p>\n<p>Legal language.<\/p>\n<p>Then I saw the signature.<\/p>\n<p>Mine.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>It was good.<\/p>\n<p>Very good.<\/p>\n<p>But I knew the way my hand moved.<\/p>\n<p>The capital E was slightly wrong.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA limited authorization granting Brandon access to certain trust information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never signed this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mouth went dry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen was it submitted?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTen days ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before Christmas.<\/p>\n<p>Before the folder at the gate.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas explained that David had processed the authorization, but the corporate trustee I had recently installed had flagged it because my legal arrangements were being changed.<\/p>\n<p>They contacted Thomas for verification.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat could Brandon have done with it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot directly withdraw money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why forge it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt would have given him information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat information?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBalances. Account details. Trust provisions. Enough to understand exactly what exists and how it is structured.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I pushed the document away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s my signature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA forgery of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy son forged my name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to establish who physically created it. But Brandon submitted it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered him at the gate.<\/p>\n<p>You&#39;re going to regret treating your family this way.<\/p>\n<p>A chill ran through me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReport it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI intended to ask whether you wanted to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEleanor, once we take that step, this stops being only a family dispute.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt stopped being a family dispute when somebody forged my signature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He studied me for a moment.<\/p>\n<p>Then nodded again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is one more development.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course there is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA former paralegal from David&#39;s office contacted me this morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe compliance investigation frightened her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her name was Megan Foster.<\/p>\n<p>She had retained copies of emails because she had become concerned that David was crossing ethical lines.<\/p>\n<p>Some involved my children.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas opened his laptop.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven&#39;t received everything yet. But she sent enough to confirm that yesterday was not spontaneous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long had they planned it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt least six weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Six weeks.<\/p>\n<p>While I was learning to play the piano again, my children were planning Christmas.<\/p>\n<p>Just not the Christmas I had imagined.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did they want me to sign?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;re still obtaining the complete packet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJessica had been communicating with a real estate broker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor my house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt isn&#39;t for sale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why would she need a broker?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe appears to have expected that to change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the ceiling.<\/p>\n<p>Robert and I had raised our children in this house.<\/p>\n<p>Birthdays had happened here.<\/p>\n<p>Graduations.<\/p>\n<p>Christmas mornings.<\/p>\n<p>Arguments on the staircase.<\/p>\n<p>Grandchildren asleep under quilts in the upstairs rooms.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica had apparently reduced all of it to an anticipated listing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas looked back at the screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone researched assisted living facilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>He didn&#39;t need to.<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI live alone. I drive. I manage my own affairs. I volunteer. I travel.
