Chloe looked uncomfortable, shifting her weight while her two children peered through the iron bars.<\/p>\n<p>For one dangerous second, seeing my grandchildren almost undid every decision I had made.<\/p>\n<p>Then Brandon tried the code a third time.<\/p>\n<p>Not once did he call my phone.<\/p>\n<p>Not once did he ask whether I was well.<\/p>\n<p>His first concern was access.<\/p>\n<p>I pressed the intercom button.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica&#39;s smile returned instantly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMerry Christmas, Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMerry Christmas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOpen the gate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told you not to come today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her smile tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it&#39;s Christmas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know what day it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She glanced over her shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe kids have been talking about seeing Grandma all week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>The lever they had expected to work.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the children clustered beside the vehicles, bundled in bright coats.<\/p>\n<p>I loved them.<\/p>\n<p>That was precisely why using them this way made me angry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love my grandchildren,\u201d I said. \u201cThey are not permission slips.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica&#39;s expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom, don&#39;t do this in front of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t bring them to a house after being told not to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brandon stepped toward the intercom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat&#39;s wrong with the gate?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy code doesn&#39;t work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCorrect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou changed it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause it&#39;s my gate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is ridiculous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen go home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Instead, he handed the folder to his wife and gripped the bars.<\/p>\n<p>I saw what he intended before he moved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrandon, don&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He put one foot against the lower crossbar.<\/p>\n<p>The security guard appeared almost immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSir, step away from the gate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brandon dropped back onto the driveway.<\/p>\n<p>His face flushed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou hired security?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hired security for my property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo keep out your own children?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo keep out anyone who refuses to respect a locked gate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica moved closer to the camera.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is our childhood home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cIt was your childhood home. It is my home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That landed harder than I expected.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe finally approached.<\/p>\n<p>She looked tired rather than angry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom, what do you want us to do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For a moment I couldn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>Because the question was three months late.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted one of you to call.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chloe looked down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted somebody to notice when I disappeared from your lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica rolled her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn&#39;t disappear. You were proving a point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou stopped calling to punish us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou asked me to stop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe asked you to give us breathing room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI gave you three months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brandon crossed his arms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd apparently spent them getting paranoid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word caught my attention.<\/p>\n<p>Paranoid.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas had warned me about language like that.<\/p>\n<p>I leaned toward the microphone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is in the folder?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrandon?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRoutine documents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEstate planning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy estate?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFamily planning, Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy does my family require paperwork for Christmas dinner?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica stepped in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause every time we try discussing practical issues, you become emotional.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost smiled at the precision of it.<\/p>\n<p>Emotional.<\/p>\n<p>Paranoid.<\/p>\n<p>Unable to discuss practical matters.<\/p>\n<p>The vocabulary of incapacity.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Chloe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat documents?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes flicked toward Brandon.<\/p>\n<p>That tiny movement told me more than an answer would have.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChloe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome medical forms,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon snapped, \u201cDon&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinancial paperwork.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat financial paperwork?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica interrupted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is exactly why we wanted to sit down calmly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen tell me through the gate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brandon gave a humorless laugh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe drove all this way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t invite you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom, stop acting like we&#39;re criminals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought about Thomas&#39;s call.<\/p>\n<p>About Brandon asking what happened to my investments if I became incapacitated.<\/p>\n<p>About Robert&#39;s handwritten notes.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid David prepare those?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another silence.<\/p>\n<p>That one mattered.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica recovered first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDavid has advised this family for years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat wasn&#39;t my question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brandon stepped toward the intercom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook, Dad left a complicated estate. Somebody needs to make sure it doesn&#39;t become a disaster if something happens to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomething did happen to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All three stared at the camera.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI spent two nights in the hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chloe&#39;s hand rose to her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica blinked.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeven weeks ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn&#39;t you tell us?\u201d Jessica demanded.<\/p>\n<p>The irony was so complete that I almost couldn&#39;t speak.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn&#39;t you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI collapsed in my hallway. Margaret found me. She sat beside my hospital bed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot one of you noticed I vanished.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chloe began crying.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica looked angry.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon looked inconvenienced.<\/p>\n<p>That difference settled something inside me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe would&#39;ve come if you&#39;d called,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you didn&#39;t come because you cared enough to call yourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn&#39;t fair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPerhaps not. But it is true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica pressed both hands against the gate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo this whole performance is revenge?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you call changing locks, hiring guards, and freezing out your children?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoundaries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brandon laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;ve been talking to a lawyer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>His face changed.<\/p>\n<p>Only slightly.<\/p>\n<p>But enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich lawyer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Interesting.<\/p>\n<p>Not why.<\/p>\n<p>Which.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy does that matter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause David handles the family trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDavid handled Robert&#39;s affairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe handles yours too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brandon went still.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica turned sharply toward him.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>I watched all three reactions.<\/p>\n<p>That was when I knew.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever they had come to accomplish depended upon David still controlling access to my affairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat have you done?\u201d Brandon asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy finances are none of your business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey absolutely are our business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad built that estate for this family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father built it so we would be secure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are the family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo am I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brandon paced away from the gate.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica lowered her voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom, please. Let us inside. We&#39;ll have dinner. The children can give you their presents. We&#39;ll calmly review the papers, and if you don&#39;t like something, you don&#39;t sign.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou haven&#39;t even read them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSend them to Thomas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brandon spun around.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas Mercer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was again.<\/p>\n<p>Recognition.<\/p>\n<p>Too much recognition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know Thomas?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe worked with Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said you weren&#39;t involved in Dad&#39;s legal details.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew his name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica interrupted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is getting absurd.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cIt&#39;s getting informative.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I asked the guard to remain near the gate.<\/p>\n<p>Then I looked at my three children through the camera.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will not sign anything today. I will not let you into the house. You were explicitly told not to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica&#39;s composure broke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter everything we&#39;ve done for you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat have you done for me, Jessica?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her mouth opened.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing came out.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon answered instead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re going to regret treating your family this way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not I miss you.<\/p>\n<p>Not I&#39;m sorry.<\/p>\n<p>Not I&#39;m glad you survived the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Regret.<\/p>\n<p>A threat disguised as concern.<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward Chloe.<\/p>\n<p>She was crying openly now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChloe, go home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTake your children somewhere warm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon&#39;t you dare leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chloe stopped.<\/p>\n<p>That command revealed a hierarchy I had never wanted to see.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy can&#39;t she leave?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one&#39;s leaving until we sort this out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is my property. You will all leave now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I signaled the guard.<\/p>\n<p>He approached the group and calmly instructed them to return to their vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica leaned toward the camera one final time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can&#39;t shut us out forever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cBut I can shut this gate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I disconnected the intercom.<\/p>\n<p>For another ten minutes, they remained outside.<\/p>\n<p>Then the vehicles reversed one by one.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe left first.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica second.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon remained longest.<\/p>\n<p>He sat behind the wheel staring toward the house.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, his SUV rolled away.<\/p>\n<p>I stood alone in Robert&#39;s study.<\/p>\n<p>My hands had begun trembling.<\/p>\n<p>Not from regret.<\/p>\n<p>From the delayed recognition of how close I might have come to opening that gate.<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEleanor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey came.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll three.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith documents?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you sign?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He exhaled audibly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is happening?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need to come tomorrow morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell me now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;ve completed the first stage of the audit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is something Robert tried to leave you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I gripped the desk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA file.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat file?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne David Vance never gave you.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=27571\">Click here to continue reading: PART 4: The File My Husband Hid for Me Contained a Warning About Our Children He Never Lived Long Enough to Explain<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The intercom chimed.
