You cannot blame me for the fact that you never asked enough questions.<\/p>\n<p>I folded the letter.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca watched me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s trying to distribute guilt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoesn\u2019t mean every sentence is false.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was the harder part.<\/p>\n<p>People who manipulated rarely lied about everything.<\/p>\n<p>They used enough truth to make distortion stick.<\/p>\n<p>I had not asked enough questions.<\/p>\n<p>That was mine.<\/p>\n<p>He had lied to make sure the answers stayed hidden.<\/p>\n<p>That was his.<\/p>\n<p>Both could exist.<\/p>\n<p>The next morning, Judge Walsh ruled that my signature did not erase evidence of fraudulent inducement.<\/p>\n<p>The trust-guarantee case could proceed.<\/p>\n<p>No automatic victory.<\/p>\n<p>No automatic liability.<\/p>\n<p>Facts would determine it.<\/p>\n<p>I was strangely relieved.<\/p>\n<p>No magic document would save me.<\/p>\n<p>We would have to prove the truth properly.<\/p>\n<p>After court, I walked alone to the supermarket.<\/p>\n<p>The same one.<\/p>\n<p>I had not planned it.<\/p>\n<p>I simply found myself there.<\/p>\n<p>The cashier from that first morning was working.<\/p>\n<p>She recognized me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything okay now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question was so ordinary that I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGetting there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I bought coffee.<\/p>\n<p>Milk.<\/p>\n<p>Vegetables.<\/p>\n<p>Toothpaste.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing symbolic.<\/p>\n<p>Just groceries.<\/p>\n<p>At checkout, I used my own card.<\/p>\n<p>Not the household Visa.<\/p>\n<p>Not a trust card.<\/p>\n<p>A new personal account I had opened myself.<\/p>\n<p>The payment approved.<\/p>\n<p>I carried the bags to my car.<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang before I reached it.<\/p>\n<p>Federal investigator.<\/p>\n<p>Harold Venn had offered cooperation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does he want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReduced exposure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says he can prove Finch was involved in all three earlier policy deaths.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped beside the car.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Harold?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe claims he never ordered killings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you believe him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what evidence is for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad would have liked that answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does Harold want from me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing officially.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnofficially?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says he will cooperate only if you acknowledge one thing on record.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat Claire Bennett violated their settlement first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the grocery bag in my hand.<\/p>\n<p>After everything, Harold still wanted narrative control.<\/p>\n<p>He wanted Mom transformed from the person who constrained him into the person who justified him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t want to hear the evidence?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll hear evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what are you refusing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo trade my conclusion for his cooperation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then the investigator said, \u201cUnderstood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I put the groceries in the trunk.<\/p>\n<p>For once, nobody else got to decide what my signature meant.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=27511\">Click here to continue reading: PART 26: Harold\u2019s Cooperation Offer Exposed Michael Finch\u2019s Role in Three Earlier Deaths, but the Evidence Also Forced Catherine to Admit One More Choice<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The document on Rebecca\u2019s conference-room table looked more dangerous than any forged paper we had found.
