Conscious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The shot had come from Mark.<\/p>\n<p>He fired into the ceiling when officers entered.<\/p>\n<p>Police did not shoot him.<\/p>\n<p>He cut his arm breaking through a glass door while trying to flee.<\/p>\n<p>They caught him outside.<\/p>\n<p>Alive.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn came out wrapped in a blanket.<\/p>\n<p>She refused an ambulance until someone let her call me.<\/p>\n<p>Her voice shook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did not tell her it was okay.<\/p>\n<p>It was not.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m glad you\u2019re alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She cried harder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI chose him for so long.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought that was what mothers did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI almost helped him destroy you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No absolution.<\/p>\n<p>No cruelty.<\/p>\n<p>Just truth.<\/p>\n<p>She whispered, \u201cWhat happens now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That answer had become strangely freeing.<\/p>\n<p>After the arrest, police searched the lake house.<\/p>\n<p>In the basement they found the records Mark stole from Harold\u2019s Northstar archive.<\/p>\n<p>Bearer agreements.<\/p>\n<p>Authentication keys.<\/p>\n<p>Insurance documents.<\/p>\n<p>Original Meridian ledgers.<\/p>\n<p>And one sealed envelope.<\/p>\n<p>My name.<\/p>\n<p>Mom\u2019s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>Mark had never opened it.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe because he did not recognize it among the files.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe because for once something intended for me remained untouched.<\/p>\n<p>I opened it at the police station.<\/p>\n<p>Emily,<\/p>\n<p>If this reaches you, then control has probably become the problem again.<\/p>\n<p>Never confuse having authority with having the right answer.<\/p>\n<p>Use the records.<\/p>\n<p>Protect yourself.<\/p>\n<p>Protect people when you can.<\/p>\n<p>But do not build another cage because someone once built one around you.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom she had written:<\/p>\n<p>And when this is over, buy your own groceries.<\/p>\n<p>I laughed so suddenly that Rebecca looked startled.<\/p>\n<p>Then I cried.<\/p>\n<p>Not dramatically.<\/p>\n<p>Not cleanly.<\/p>\n<p>I simply sat there holding the letter while everything from the supermarket onward passed through me.<\/p>\n<p>The frozen card.<\/p>\n<p>The fake incapacity.<\/p>\n<p>The fire.<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s recordings.<\/p>\n<p>Mom\u2019s agreements.<\/p>\n<p>Catherine.<\/p>\n<p>Peter.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret.<\/p>\n<p>Harold.<\/p>\n<p>Mark.<\/p>\n<p>Every person trying to control what someone else would choose.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca let me finish.<\/p>\n<p>Then she placed the recovered Meridian documents in front of me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is enough here to determine ownership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much do I control?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPotentially fifty-one percent of several successor entities once Claire\u2019s penalty provision is adjudicated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Including Harbor Meridian Assurance.<\/p>\n<p>Including the policy on my life.<\/p>\n<p>Including accounts Harold used for Blackglass.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan I shut it down?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith court approval, much of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about the money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome belongs to victims. Some to investors. Some may be forfeited. Some is disputed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Northstar?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStill separate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked through the conference-room window.<\/p>\n<p>Drivers came and went.<\/p>\n<p>Dispatchers answered calls.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody outside cared about Meridian percentages.<\/p>\n<p>They wanted tomorrow\u2019s routes.<\/p>\n<p>Their paychecks.<\/p>\n<p>Their lives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen we separate them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNorthstar gets restructured transparently. Employees keep the trust rights Mom and Dad created. My trust protects only what it lawfully owns.
