He came after me anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel began crying.<\/p>\n<p>I watched without satisfaction.<\/p>\n<p>Fear explained.<\/p>\n<p>It did not erase.<\/p>\n<p>The detective asked why he filed my death certificate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHarold scheduled it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDead-man protocol.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou could have refused.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel looked toward Lena.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Harold said if I didn\u2019t, he\u2019d release documents making her look like part of everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>Protect someone by harming someone else.<\/p>\n<p>Harold\u2019s oldest machine.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel admitted cloning Lena\u2019s badge months earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Not for the death certificate originally.<\/p>\n<p>For access.<\/p>\n<p>He installed the USB token.<\/p>\n<p>He compromised county registrar credentials.<\/p>\n<p>He helped maintain Blackglass.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you sabotage the trucks?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinch?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInsurance policies?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI maintained digital records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know people died?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel looked sick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew policies paid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t the question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He whispered, \u201cI suspected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The investigator asked where Harold kept original ownership records after Blackglass activation.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost moved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCold storage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPhysical documents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLocation?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDifferent places.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrimary?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnder Northstar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paul, standing near the door, frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnder what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHeadquarters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was no basement beneath most of Northstar\u2019s building.<\/p>\n<p>But the headquarters had been constructed over an older freight terminal.<\/p>\n<p>A sealed underground document tunnel still existed beneath the eastern loading yard.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody used it.<\/p>\n<p>Paul knew of it.<\/p>\n<p>Lena did not.<\/p>\n<p>Mark probably did.<\/p>\n<p>Harold certainly did.<\/p>\n<p>Police searched immediately.<\/p>\n<p>The tunnel entrance had been reopened.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were metal cabinets.<\/p>\n<p>Server racks.<\/p>\n<p>Boxes.<\/p>\n<p>And one room behind a reinforced door.<\/p>\n<p>The door stood open.<\/p>\n<p>Empty shelves.<\/p>\n<p>Fresh tire tracks on the floor.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had removed the archive recently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow recently?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Paul examined the dust.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Security footage showed a box truck leaving the east yard at 5:11 that morning.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty minutes after the false death filing.<\/p>\n<p>Registered to:<\/p>\n<p>Claire Northstar Employee Trust.<\/p>\n<p>Impossible.<\/p>\n<p>The trust had existed less than two days and owned no trucks.<\/p>\n<p>The registration was forged.<\/p>\n<p>Traffic cameras followed it north.<\/p>\n<p>Toward Maryland.<\/p>\n<p>Then it disappeared near Towson.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn\u2019s neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn.<\/p>\n<p>Her voice was shaking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmily, there\u2019s a truck outside my house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat truck?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay inside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI already went out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvelyn\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe back is open.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I heard her breathing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoxes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not touch them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A long pause.<\/p>\n<p>Then she whispered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s someone here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo inside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s Mark.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My entire body went cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMark is in custody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Footsteps.<\/p>\n<p>Then Mark\u2019s voice came through her phone.<\/p>\n<p>Not from detention.<\/p>\n<p>From Evelyn\u2019s yard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHi, Emily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The line went dead.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=27509\">Click here to continue reading: PART 24: Mark\u2019s Escape Was Planned Inside Harold\u2019s Dead-Man System, and Evelyn Finally Chose Between Protecting Her Son and Saving Me<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The death certificate listed a county where I had not been in months.
