activated automatically.

Peter confirmed the dormant accounts began moving almost exactly twelve hours after Harold was shot and hospitalized under guard.

So the trigger was likely automated.

“Can it be stopped?”

Mark said, “There should be a cancellation phrase.”

“Where?”

“In Harold’s personal cipher book.”

“Do we have it?”

Nobody answered.

Then I remembered the red ledger cover.

The one found in Dad’s factory sub-basement.

Margaret’s initials.

Not Harold’s.

Maybe we had misunderstood.

The cover interior contained embossed letters.

M.E.V.

Margaret Ellis Venn.

But beneath the leather lining, forensic technicians found something else.

A strip of paper.

Three words.

CLAIRE WAS RIGHT.

Peter stared.

“That could be the phrase.”

Too simple.

Which probably meant Harold hated it enough to use it.

Investigators entered the cancellation phrase into one seized Meridian control portal.

Rejected.

Second.

Rejected.

Third.

Accepted.

Transfers paused.

Not reversed.

But stopped.

Forty million dollars frozen mid-flight.

Harold, lying under guard with a wounded shoulder, received the notification on a secure device seized from his storage box.

The detective later told me his reaction.

He read the message.

Closed his eyes.

Then said one sentence.

“Claire always did enjoy the last word.”

But Blackglass had already completed one action before we stopped it.

A server outside Richmond had been erased.

That server stored administrator records for Harbor Meridian Assurance.

The owner of my life-insurance policy.

Without those records, proving who currently controlled the policy company became harder.

Not impossible.

Just harder.

Then the insurer called Rebecca.

Someone had submitted a death claim on me.

Timestamp:

4:12 that morning.

Supporting document:

A certified death certificate.

Name:

Emily Bennett Carter.

Cause:

Motor vehicle accident.

I stared at it.

“I’m standing here.”

Rebecca’s face hardened.

“Yes.”

The certificate carried a county registrar’s digital seal.

Authentic seal.

False death.

Harold’s system had not merely prepared for my death.

It had begun legally creating one.

Click
