You both discover everyone around you is making decisions for your protection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The detective shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>No trace yet.<\/p>\n<p>Harold was routing the call.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou want Peter and Margaret back?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen tell police to leave Meridian alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are accounts scheduled to move.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour five million?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMuch more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you want me to do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop challenging the Northstar guarantee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca mouthed, No.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf your trust invalidates the guarantee, Meridian structures collapse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeaning you lose money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeaning a great many people lose money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich people?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInvestors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cName them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you want me to preserve fraudulent debt because it protects your investors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want you to honor a transaction your trust signed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBased on falsified books.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat remains to be proven.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMargaret has the originals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>Small.<\/p>\n<p>But real.<\/p>\n<p>Harold had not known whether we found them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t have the originals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow sure are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>Behind me, the detective received a message.<\/p>\n<p>Trace narrowing.<\/p>\n<p>I kept talking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happens if I refuse?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen Peter\u2019s decisions become public.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m done being frightened by family secrets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven the one involving your mother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart lurched.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire knew about the Ellis settlement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not a secret.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe did more than know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret shouted in the background.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHarold!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He ignored her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother convinced Thomas to pressure Margaret.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I went still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s a lie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk Peter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did.<\/p>\n<p>Peter did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice came quietly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire supported the pension settlement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is not the same thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Mom pressure Margaret?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe met with her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen don\u2019t imply you know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harold laughed softly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood. You\u2019re learning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The detective held up three fingers.<\/p>\n<p>Trace nearly complete.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy does this matter now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harold said, \u201cBecause the Bennetts built their moral reputation on other people\u2019s losses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. It matters because you need leverage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPerhaps both are true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A signal came from the technician.<\/p>\n<p>Location acquired.<\/p>\n<p>An abandoned marina outside Annapolis.<\/p>\n<p>Police units moved.<\/p>\n<p>I asked one final question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you wanted money, why threaten Peter and Margaret instead of disappearing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harold\u2019s tone shifted for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>Almost irritation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Margaret took something from me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy ledger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe original?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret shouted from somewhere away from the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot where he thinks!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harold cursed.<\/p>\n<p>Then the call disconnected.<\/p>\n<p>We drove only after police secured the marina.<\/p>\n<p>Harold was gone.<\/p>\n<p>Peter and Margaret were found locked inside an office near the docks.<\/p>\n<p>Uninjured.<\/p>\n<p>No ledger.<\/p>\n<p>Harold had escaped by boat less than fifteen minutes before officers arrived.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret clung to a blanket while paramedics examined her.<\/p>\n<p>Peter sat on an overturned crate.<\/p>\n<p>I stood in front of him.<\/p>\n<p>He looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He closed his mouth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is the policy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStill active.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCancel it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the foundation debt purchases?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe unwind whatever you decide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. You don\u2019t decide what I decide anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Peter looked down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Dad told you when the protocol triggered, contact me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you overrode him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought I could fix it first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sentence has ruined a lot of lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>I turned to Margaret.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere\u2019s Harold\u2019s ledger?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked toward Peter.<\/p>\n<p>Then at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI gave it to Thomas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My breath caught.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSix years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad had it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen where is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said he put it somewhere nobody involved could reach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe never told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Peter spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know where.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We both looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas left one final escrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat escrow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe called it Claire\u2019s choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ledger. Insurance records. Meridian ownership documents.
