her.”

“For what?”

“Helping him.”

The detective leaned forward.

“Start from the beginning.”

Daniel said Mark met Catherine when he was twenty-four.

They married quickly.

Catherine worked in bookkeeping for a regional freight company.

Mark had not yet founded Northstar.

She knew accounting systems.

Vendor structures.

Commercial credit.

Most importantly, she knew how small logistics companies hid ownership.

“They started Northstar together?” I asked.

“Not officially.”

“What does that mean?”

“The first entity wasn’t called Northstar.”

It was called CB Freight Solutions.

C.B.

Catherine Blake.

The shell company Raymond referenced.

CB Freight Solutions bought distressed receivables, arranged subcontracting and moved money between small carriers.

Mark handled sales.

Catherine handled books.

Then they separated.

Mark created Northstar Logistics.

According to Daniel, some early Northstar contracts originally belonged to CB Freight.

“So Mark took them?”

“I don’t know whether took is the right word.”

“It usually is when someone removes assets from one company and puts them in another.”

Daniel looked away.

“Catherine claimed they had an agreement.”

“What agreement?”

“She would stay hidden as long as Mark paid her.”

“Why hidden?”

“Because of the divorce.”

I stared.

“Divorce?”

“Yes.”

“She didn’t die.”

“No.”

“Did they divorce?”

Daniel hesitated.

“I thought so.”

That answer was not good enough.

The detective searched court records.

No divorce decree existed in Maryland under Mark Carter and Catherine Blake.

Neighboring states.

Nothing.

National databases.

Nothing obvious.

Rebecca looked at me slowly.

“Emily.”

I understood.

“If they never divorced—”

“We need certified records before drawing conclusions.”

My stomach dropped anyway.

Mark and I had married eight years earlier.

If his first marriage still legally existed, ours might never have been valid.

The detective requested a full marriage-record search.

Meanwhile we examined Raymond Price’s ledger.

Catherine’s initials appeared repeatedly.

C.B. — initial books.

C.B. — first vendor structure.

C.B. says M.C. cannot be trusted with unrestricted cash.

Then a later entry.

C.B. demands settlement or exposure.

Amount: $750,000.

The payment trail showed Mark paid her in installments through Northstar vendors.

“Using company money again,” I said.

Rebecca nodded.

One payment occurred weeks after my trust financing entered Northstar.

My money had indirectly paid the woman Mark told me was dead.

I felt physically ill.

The detective asked Daniel for Catherine’s location.

“I don’t know.”

“Last contact?”

“Three years ago.”

“With you?”

“No. Mark.”

“How do you know?”

“I saw the wire.”

James traced it.

$300,000 to an entity called Westhaven Consulting.

Registered in Delaware.

Beneficial owner hidden.

A subpoena request began.

While that moved, certified marriage records returned faster than expected.

Mark Carter married Catherine Elise Blake in Virginia eleven years before he married me.

No divorce decree appeared in Virginia.

No annulment.

No recorded death certificate.

Catherine Blake’s Social Security number remained active.

She had filed federal taxes last year.

I sat in silence.

Rebecca closed the file.

“We still need to confirm identity continuity.”

“Meaning?”

“That the woman using the Social Security number is the same Catherine.”

“You think there might be two?”

“I think we prove before concluding.”

We found a driver’s-license record.

Catherine Elise Blake.

Age fifty.

Address in Wilmington, Delaware.

Photograph.

Dark hair streaked with gray.

Sharp cheekbones.

A face I had never seen.

Alive.

Mark had lied about a dead first wife for our entire relationship.

“What does this make me?”

Rebecca answered carefully.

“Potentially a party to a void marriage entered without knowledge of the existing marriage.”

“Not wife.”

“Legally, that depends on jurisdictional facts. I had written spouse.

Maybe I had never been one.

Police contacted Catherine.

She answered.

At first she denied knowing Mark.

Then the detective mentioned Raymond Price’s ledger.

Silence.

Then she said, “Is Mark dead?”

“No.”

“Arrested?”

“Yes.”

Another silence.

“I’ll talk.”

She refused to come to Maryland immediately.

We arranged a recorded video interview with her attorney present.

When Catherine appeared on screen, she looked directly at me before anyone spoke.

“I’m sorry.”

The words enraged me.

“For what?”

“For more than I can explain quickly.”

“Try.”

Her attorney cautioned her.

Catherine ignored him.

“Mark and I separated nine years before you married him.”

“Separated.”

“Yes.”

“Not divorced.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“He wouldn’t sign.”

“You could have filed.”

“I did.”

“What happened?”

“He threatened me.”

“With what?”

“Prison.”

Catherine explained that CB Freight Solutions had falsified invoices and moved funds through vendor accounts.

She said Mark designed some of it.

She executed much of it.

When she tried leaving him, he threatened to turn records over to prosecutors and claim she acted alone.

“So you disappeared.”

“I left the state.”

“And let him tell people you were dead?”

“I didn’t know that at first.”

“When did you learn?”

“After he married you.”

My chest tightened.

“And you did nothing.”

“I contacted him.”

“For money.”

Her eyes dropped.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I was broke and scared.”

“That doesn’t answer why you didn’t tell me.”

“I told him I would.”

“And?”

“He paid me.”

There it was.

No noble explanation.

She sold silence.

“Did you know where the money came from?”

“At first, no.”

“Later?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know some came from Northstar after my trust rescued it?”

She hesitated.

“Yes.”

I nearly ended the interview.

Rebecca touched my wrist.

“Keep going.”

I hated that she was right.

“What did you help Mark set up?”

Catherine described CB Freight and three related shells.

One accepted vendor payments.

One purchased receivables.

One held reserve cash beyond normal accounting.

Mark learned how to move money through all three.

She said he later adapted those methods inside Northstar.

“So you taught him.”

“I taught him bookkeeping.”

“You helped him hide assets.”

“Yes.”

“Did you help plan anything involving me?”

“No.”

The answer came quickly.

“Did you know about me before we met?”

“No.”

“Did Mark?”

Catherine looked confused.

“What do you mean?”

I asked whether Mark knew who I was before our supposed first meeting.

We met at a charity dinner.

He told me he had accepted a last-minute invitation from a client.

Catherine’s face changed.

“What charity?”

I told her.

The Bennett Children’s Medical Fund.

My father’s foundation before Mom died.

Catherine leaned back.

“He knew.”

The room went still.

“How?”

“Mark followed Thomas Bennett’s companies.”

“Why?”

“Investment targets.”

“What?”

Before Northstar, Mark and Catherine studied family-owned companies with significant private capital.

Mark believed relationships gave access to financing traditional lenders would not provide.

“He called it proximity capital.”

My mouth went dry.

“Was my father a target?”

Catherine answered carefully.

“His businesses were on Mark’s list.”

“And me?”

“I saw your name in research files.”

“How long before I met him?”

“At least a year.”

My stomach turned.

Mark had Whether there were marital restrictions.”

Before our first date.

Before the proposal.

Before the supermarket.

The financial questions had come first.

Rebecca asked, “Catherine, did Mark marry Emily for access to the Bennett trust?”

Catherine looked at me.

“I can’t know what he felt.”

The answer was more honest than certainty.

“But?”

“He talked about you before he met you.”

“What did he say?”

“That Thomas Bennett had one daughter.”

My hands clenched.

“And?”

“That daughters inherit.”

No one spoke.

Catherine began crying.

“I’m sorry.”

“Stop saying that.”

She wiped her face.

“I should have warned you.”

“Yes.”

“I thought he loved you eventually.”

“Eventually.”

“He changed after he met you.”

“You accepted money to remain silent.”

“Yes.”

“How much total?”

“About one point six million over the years.”

Rebecca asked whether Catherine retained records from CB Freight.

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Safe deposit.”

“Would you provide them?”

“If I receive immunity consideration.”

Her attorney finally intervened.

Any cooperation would require formal negotiation.

The detective agreed to discuss terms with prosecutors.

Before ending the call, I asked one more question.

“Why did Mark tell me you died?”

Catherine stared at the camera.

“I think because dead people can’t return.”

The screen went black.

I sat there for a long time.

Then Rebecca’s phone rang.

The forensic accountant.

Westhaven Consulting’s beneficial-owner records had been obtained.

Catherine owned only ten percent.

The remaining ninety percent belonged to someone else.

Not Mark.

Not Daniel.

Not Evelyn.

Owner: Harold Venn.

“So Venn was paying Catherine?”

Rebecca said.

“Or receiving money through her company.”

The accountant traced recent transfers.

Money from EVC.

Money from Northstar vendors.

Money from one of Mark’s gambling-linked entities.

All converged into Westhaven.

Then a final transfer.

Five million dollars.

Sent three weeks earlier to an offshore account.

Authorized by Harold helped him.”

“For a while.”

“You helped him try to take my trust.”

“I helped myself.”

“Five million one?”

“You think Mark selected you because you were Thomas Bennett’s daughter.”

“He researched
