Mark had driven me to the funeral afterward.<\/p>\n<p>Now a document claimed that during those final unconscious days, Adrian had examined me and declared me incapable of managing my affairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were at his funeral,\u201d I told Mark.<\/p>\n<p>He avoided my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t prepare every attachment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour name is on the filing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAttorneys handled the paperwork.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat attorney gets a competency examination from a man in a coma?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn turned toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me a doctor had actually evaluated her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark\u2019s jaw tightened. \u201cI told you everything was legal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t what you said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The first crack opened between them.<\/p>\n<p>The bank investigator inspected the electronic properties of the supposed medical certification.<\/p>\n<p>The document claimed to be months old.<\/p>\n<p>The file itself had been created the previous night.<\/p>\n<p>The listed author was Mark Carter.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn took a step away from him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said Cole signed it before his stroke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark claimed the file was only a scan of an older original.<\/p>\n<p>The investigator asked where that original was.<\/p>\n<p>Mark said his attorney had it.<\/p>\n<p>He would not name the attorney.<\/p>\n<p>Every explanation seemed to exist only long enough to fail.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re ruining our marriage over paperwork you don\u2019t understand,\u201d Mark told me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou filed a petition saying I can\u2019t manage my own life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m protecting Northstar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve never understood the business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never wanted to run Northstar. I wanted you not to steal from it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn reached for her handbag.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe should leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark snapped at her. \u201cYou\u2019re staying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou signed the petition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause you said it would only be temporary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody moved.<\/p>\n<p>Mark looked at his mother.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn realized what she had said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTemporary?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>She tried to retract it.<\/p>\n<p>I did not let her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat were you supposed to do while you temporarily controlled my property?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark stepped toward her. \u201cStop talking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Security moved closer.<\/p>\n<p>Fear passed between mother and son.<\/p>\n<p>A few minutes later we learned police were on their way because the suspected identity theft and falsified banking documents had triggered formal reporting procedures.<\/p>\n<p>Mark blamed me.<\/p>\n<p>I answered with the only truth left between us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou did this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Security escorted Mark and Evelyn downstairs.<\/p>\n<p>At the door, Evelyn looked back at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis wouldn\u2019t have happened if you had cooperated with the restructuring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark seized her arm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She pulled free.<\/p>\n<p>But I had heard it.<\/p>\n<p>Restructuring.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca Sloan arrived shortly after four.<\/p>\n<p>She had served as my father\u2019s trust attorney for fifteen years and understood its protections better than anyone alive. She read the guardianship papers, the bank records and the medical certification without interrupting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe hearing is tomorrow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Evelyn is the proposed guardian?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca immediately understood why.<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s trust prevented a spouse from directly controlling the trust after an incapacity finding. Evelyn did not fall under the same prohibition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the judge appoints her,\u201d Rebecca said, \u201cshe could exercise authority over certain decisions on your behalf.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Mark believes he controls her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca\u2019s expression was dry. \u201cI think today has already established that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She began preparing an emergency objection.<\/p>\n<p>But one detail troubled her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGuardianship proceedings invite scrutiny,\u201d she said. \u201cIf Mark is hiding fraud, why voluntarily put financial records in front of a judge?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he needs control quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExactly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We returned to the blocked $1.8 million payment.<\/p>\n<p>Several documents supported the proposed transfer.<\/p>\n<p>One was an EVC invoice.<\/p>\n<p>Another was labeled Acquisition Schedule.<\/p>\n<p>A third was password protected.<\/p>\n<p>Because my trust guaranteed the Northstar facility, the fraud department opened the supporting file.<\/p>\n<p>While they worked, Rebecca called Dr. Cole\u2019s former medical practice.<\/p>\n<p>The office confirmed he could not possibly have examined me on the stated date.<\/p>\n<p>Then Rebecca asked a different question.<\/p>\n<p>Had anyone requested my medical records?<\/p>\n<p>The answer was yes.<\/p>\n<p>Mark Carter had requested them eight months earlier.<\/p>\n<p>He had supplied written authorization.<\/p>\n<p>Bearing my forged signature.<\/p>\n<p>The records had been delivered to the same false email address someone later tried to substitute on my banking profile.<\/p>\n<p>This had begun far earlier than the supermarket.<\/p>\n<p>The investigator returned with the unlocked file.<\/p>\n<p>The first page contained two company names.<\/p>\n<p>Northstar Logistics.<\/p>\n<p>EVC Management Holdings.<\/p>\n<p>Below them appeared the words ASSET PURCHASE AGREEMENT.<\/p>\n<p>I read the list.<\/p>\n<p>Trucks.<\/p>\n<p>Trailers.<\/p>\n<p>Warehouse leases.<\/p>\n<p>Dispatch systems.<\/p>\n<p>Customer contracts.<\/p>\n<p>Equipment.<\/p>\n<p>Fuel agreements.<\/p>\n<p>Even the Northstar name.<\/p>\n<p>Everything that generated revenue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEVC is buying the company?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot exactly,\u201d Rebecca said. \u201cIt\u2019s buying the operating assets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The purchase price was $2,548,500.<\/p>\n<p>James and I recognized the figure simultaneously.<\/p>\n<p>The three earlier transfers totaled $748,500.<\/p>\n<p>Add the blocked $1.8 million payment.<\/p>\n<p>Exactly $2,548,500.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re using Northstar\u2019s money to buy Northstar,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca kept reading.<\/p>\n<p>The structure was even worse.<\/p>\n<p>EVC would receive the valuable operating assets.<\/p>\n<p>Northstar would retain its liabilities.<\/p>\n<p>That included the credit facility guaranteed by my trust.<\/p>\n<p>Once Northstar no longer possessed the trucks, contracts and revenue needed to service its debt, the lender could pursue the collateral behind the guarantee.<\/p>\n<p>My inheritance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey get the business,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd my trust gets the debt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark had signed the sale for Northstar.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn had signed for EVC.<\/p>\n<p>A third signature supposedly showed approval from Northstar\u2019s guarantor and principal investor.<\/p>\n<p>Mine.<\/p>\n<p>Another forgery.<\/p>\n<p>Then Rebecca found the schedule.<\/p>\n<p>Guardianship hearing: 9:00 a.m.<\/p>\n<p>Asset closing: 10:30 a.m.<\/p>\n<p>Ninety minutes.<\/p>\n<p>That was what Evelyn had meant by temporary.<\/p>\n<p>If she became my guardian at nine, she could ratify the sale on my behalf at ten-thirty.<\/p>\n<p>My phone buzzed.<\/p>\n<p>A message from Mark.<\/p>\n<p>You should have stayed out of company business. Tomorrow you\u2019ll understand.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca preserved it.<\/p>\n<p>James continued examining the closing file.<\/p>\n<p>Northstar\u2019s five largest customers had supposedly agreed to transfer their contracts to EVC. Together, those customers represented most of the company\u2019s revenue.<\/p>\n<p>Their approval was certified by Northstar\u2019s chief financial officer.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Price.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at his name.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel had worked beside Mark for six years. He had eaten dinner in our home.
