Come home and we can discuss your allowance.<\/p>\n<p>I showed James.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeep everything,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI intend to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He began examining Northstar\u2019s recent transactions.<\/p>\n<p>After several minutes, his typing slowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you find?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree payments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned the monitor.<\/p>\n<p>Each transfer was for $249,500.<\/p>\n<p>I understood before he explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy approval starts at two hundred fifty thousand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Three transfers, deliberately sized five hundred dollars beneath the threshold.<\/p>\n<p>One four months earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Another seven weeks earlier.<\/p>\n<p>The latest only days ago.<\/p>\n<p>Total: $748,500.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho received them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>James opened the beneficiary details.<\/p>\n<p>EVC Management Holdings.<\/p>\n<p>The company meant nothing to me.<\/p>\n<p>The registered address did.<\/p>\n<p>Towson.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn\u2019s townhouse.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the initials.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn Victoria Carter.<\/p>\n<p>My mind returned to her smile beside the flowers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Northstar supposedly buy from her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>James read the descriptions.<\/p>\n<p>Consulting.<\/p>\n<p>Executive development.<\/p>\n<p>Acquisition planning.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn had spent most of her working life managing the front office of a dental practice. She had never run a logistics company. Yet Mark had directed almost three quarters of a million dollars to a company registered at her home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything else?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>James\u2019s expression answered before he spoke.<\/p>\n<p>A fourth payment was scheduled for four that afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>This one was $1.8 million.<\/p>\n<p>Recipient: EVC Management Holdings.<\/p>\n<p>The transaction required my approval.<\/p>\n<p>Unless the authorization change went through first.<\/p>\n<p>The clock read 2:47.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBlock it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>James began working.<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang again.<\/p>\n<p>This time I answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you?\u201d Mark demanded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHandling a problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just received a bank alert.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI expected you would.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then, carefully, \u201cAre you with James?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I heard a voice behind him.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn.<\/p>\n<p>So they were together.<\/p>\n<p>Mark\u2019s tone softened artificially. \u201cEmily, you don\u2019t understand Northstar\u2019s financial structure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand $249,500.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree times.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Finally he said the payments were legitimate consulting expenses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo your mother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe has advised me for years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor nearly three quarters of a million dollars?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t know what she sacrificed for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is corporate money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou always reduce everything to money your father left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father\u2019s trust guarantees the debt you\u2019re moving around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He became quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the $1.8 million?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>His voice changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not interfere with that payment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s already blocked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI stopped it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou had no right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sentence was so absurd that I nearly laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy trust guarantees Northstar\u2019s borrowing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNorthstar is my company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen explain why you forged my signature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I heard Evelyn react in the background.<\/p>\n<p>Mark moved away from her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBe very careful with accusations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFine. Explain why a document bearing a signature I didn\u2019t make was submitted from your company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve signed plenty of operating paperwork.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou probably forgot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Forgot.<\/p>\n<p>There it was again.<\/p>\n<p>The false letter already described me as confused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t forget.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve been stressed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, Mark. I\u2019ve trusted you. That\u2019s different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He told me he was coming to the bank.<\/p>\n<p>I told him not to.<\/p>\n<p>He hung up.<\/p>\n<p>Moments later the fraud review uncovered another attempt.<\/p>\n<p>Eleven days earlier, someone had requested that my private banking email be replaced.<\/p>\n<p>The new address resembled mine but was not mine.<\/p>\n<p>The request had originated from Northstar\u2019s executive office.<\/p>\n<p>The replacement telephone number belonged to Mark.<\/p>\n<p>Had the change succeeded, future warnings about my trust and the corporate facility could have gone directly to him.<\/p>\n<p>For years I had mistaken distance from Northstar for generosity. I wanted Mark to feel that the company belonged to his effort, not to my inheritance.<\/p>\n<p>Now I understood that every step backward had given him more room.<\/p>\n<p>James\u2019s assistant entered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Carter is downstairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. His mother is with him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Security brought them upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>Mark entered first, face flushed, tie immaculate.
