me.

For twenty-seven years, Samuel had apparently believed technical clarity could solve a human governance problem.

My father and Marcus eventually learned the opposite.

A system had to assume its operators would fail.

That was why they distributed power.

Samuel considered distributed power weakness.

The foundation considered it protection.

Then I asked whether he had altered Reserve B after Leonard died.

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“Less than Leonard stole.”

“Not the question.”

“Approximately nineteen million in movements.”

“For yourself?”

“No.”

“Where?”

“Preservation accounts.”

“Under whose names?”

“Multiple.”

“Without consent.”

“Yes.”

My name was among them.

Celia’s.

Gavin’s.

Evelyn’s.

Nadine’s.

Samuel used existing identities to prevent any one claimant from seizing funds.

He called it fragmentation.

Legally, it created false ownership trails that would take years to untangle.

“You made the problem worse.”

“I kept Julian from consolidating it.”

“And now no one knows what belongs to whom.”

“That can be reconstructed.”

“By you?”

He did not answer.

Of course.

Samuel always assumed he would remain available to explain the system.

That was the arrogance underneath everything.

Then investigators entered with a new report from his servers.

A deletion log.

Samuel had erased one directory remotely while police approached his property.

Not everything.

One folder.

MERCER.

Gavin’s name.

Samuel’s expression changed.

“Why delete it?” Mara asked.

“I didn’t.”

The logs showed administrator action.

His account.

His machine.

But Samuel insisted he had not touched the server after police arrived.

Forensics checked.

The deletion occurred four minutes after he was placed in custody.

Someone else still had root access.

Samuel looked genuinely alarmed.

“Who has it?” I asked.

He did not answer.

Mara repeated the question.

Samuel finally said:

“Only one person should.”

“Who?”

He looked toward the glass.

“Eleanor.”

My stomach tightened.

Eleanor had claimed she infiltrated Samuel’s plan to gather evidence.

Now Samuel claimed she possessed root access to his archive.

We checked her seized laptop.

No active session.

Her phone.

Nothing.

Then investigators examined the encrypted drive from her apartment.

A hidden partition appeared.

Inside was a copy of Samuel’s administrator key.

Eleanor had lied again.

She had deeper access than she admitted.

And the deleted MERCER directory had been copied to that hidden partition six hours before Samuel’s arrest.

Eleanor had taken Gavin’s file.

Then someone used Samuel’s key to erase the original.

When confronted, she stopped answering.

Her attorney requested privacy.

An hour later, Eleanor returned.

“I copied the file.”

“Why?”

“Because it contains evidence about Michael Mercer.”

Gavin’s father.

Not Julian.

Michael.

The man Gavin still called his real father.

“What evidence?” Gavin asked when told.

Eleanor looked toward him through the secure screen.

“Evidence that Michael knew Julian was your biological father.”

Gavin’s face hardened.

“We already know that.”

“No.”

Eleanor swallowed.

“That isn’t what I mean.”

She opened the copied directory.

Inside was a recording dated twenty-nine years earlier.

Michael Mercer speaking with Thomas Vale.

Michael’s voice shook.

If Julian ever learns I know what Lydia told me, he’ll make Gavin part of his world.

Thomas answered:

Then we make sure Gavin grows up outside it.

Gavin stared at the transcript.

His father had known.

And Thomas had helped him keep Julian away.

But the recording continued.

Michael said he had discovered something else.

Julian was not the person who first put money into the Mercer family business.

Leonard Shaw had.

Using funds from a private reserve.

Years before LatticeForge.

Years before Gavin became an entrepreneur.

Gavin’s family had been connected to Reserve B before he ever met Julian as an adult.

Then Michael said:

Leonard wants Gavin indebted before he is old enough to know why.

The room went silent.

Samuel had not selected Gavin later because he happened to build LatticeForge.

Someone had been positioning Gavin from childhood.

And Thomas knew.

Click here to continue reading: PART 27: Michael Mercer’s Secret Recording Revealed Gavin Had Been Targeted Since
