his father, Michael Mercer.

The affair lasted several months.

Then Lydia became pregnant.

Michael knew.

That surprised me.

“He knew Gavin might not be after Michael died, Julian moved closer.

Mentorship.

Introductions.

Money.

Influence.

All the things Gavin had mistaken for a powerful older man’s Northstar.

Julian personally.

She asked him to help Gavin.

He agreed.

After that, boundaries dissolved.

“Did Gavin’s inheritance from the network as restitution for Lydia’s share of the original partnership losses.

But privately, he also wanted his son to succeed.

He could not acknowledge Gavin publicly without destroying Michael Mercer’s memory and Lydia’s family.

So he did what he always did.

He used money to accomplish what honesty would have complicated.

Gavin returned twenty minutes later.

His face was expressionless.

He sat without looking at Lydia.

“DNA.”

Julian nodded.

“I’ll provide a anticipated.

I felt no satisfaction.

Only exhaustion.

Celia asked whether her father knew Gavin was Julian’s son.

Julian said yes.

That explained part of Marcus’s determination to keep Celia away from Julian’s orbit.

Not merely financial danger.

Family history.

“Did my mother know?” Celia asked.

“No.”

Elena died years before Julian began involving himself in Gavin’s life.

Then Adrian entered with preliminary DNA arrangements and another discovery.

Lydia had voluntarily surrendered boxes from a private storage facility.

Inside were letters between her and Julian spanning four decades.

One letter concerned me.

It was dated six months before Gavin and I met.

Julian wrote:

Thomas’s daughter has joined Meridian Crest’s upper finance group.
