10 – Raymond’s Last Contact With Julian Revealed a Secret Bargain, and Celia Discovered Her Father Had Left Her Proof That Could Destroy LatticeForge

Julian refused to explain the bargain while other people remained in the room.

That request ended the call.

Mara would not permit a private conversation, and Julian would not continue with counsel listening.

For once, neither side moved.

The call disconnected.

Thirty seconds later, Gavin slammed his fist against the table.

Not hard enough to damage anything.

Hard enough to make Lydia jump.

“Twenty years,” he said.

She looked at him.

“Gavin—”

“Twenty years you let that man shape my life.”

“I didn’t understand what he was doing.”

“You accepted his money.”

“For you.”

“That does not make it better.”

Lydia stood.

“I thought I was repairing what had been taken from all of us.”

“You repaired it by making me dependent on the person who helped steal it?”

“I did not know that then.”

“When did you know?”

The question landed differently.

Lydia looked toward Vincent.

Gavin saw it.

“So you did know eventually.”

“Not everything.”

“When?”

“About six years ago.”

Six years.

That was before our marriage began to fracture.

Before Celia.

Before the insurance policy.

Before many of the questionable LatticeForge transactions.

Gavin stared at his mother.

“You knew Julian might have been involved six years ago and you kept taking his money.”

“I had no proof.”

“You had enough doubt to investigate.”

“Yes.”

“And not enough to tell me?”

“I was trying to protect the company.”

“There it is again.”

Gavin walked away.

Every secret in this story seemed to have been committed in someone else’s name.

Protection.

Preservation.

Stability.

Family.

The words changed.

The conduct did not.

Lydia finally admitted that six years earlier, Marcus Hart had sent her documents suggesting Julian knew more about the original transfer than he admitted.

Marcus urged her to stop involving him in recovery efforts.

She did not.

“Why?”

“Because by then Gavin’s company needed capital.”

Gavin’s face hardened.

“I could have raised elsewhere.”

“Not then.”

“You don’t know that.”

“I was there.”

“So was I.”

She looked at him.

“And you were weeks from missing payroll.”

That silenced him.

I remembered that period.

LatticeForge had nearly failed.

Gavin told me the company survived because an overseas investor stepped in.

That investor had been Northstar.

Which meant Julian, indirectly.

Again.

The phone rang.

This time it was Celia.

Her attorney was with her.

She needed to speak immediately.

We moved to another secure room.

Celia appeared on video with a cardboard archive box behind her.

Her face looked pale and sleepless.

“My father kept more than a notebook.”

She lifted a flat leather portfolio.

Inside were photocopies of corporate records, letters, bank statements, and a handwritten timeline.

Marcus had apparently spent years reconstructing the original theft independently.

One document contained a list of companies receiving money descended from the disputed pool.

LatticeForge appeared.

So did Bellwether.

Northstar.

Three property companies.

Two venture funds.

And a foundation.

The Ellison Foundation.

The organization whose dinner had introduced me to Gavin.

I closed my eyes.

Nothing about that night seemed accidental anymore.

Celia continued.

Marcus believed Julian had turned the stolen money into what he called a restitution network.

The phrase was written in quotation marks, as though Marcus were mocking it.

Julian’s concept was simple.

Invest the disputed assets.

Grow them.

Use the profits to support descendants of the original stakeholders.

Eventually distribute value back without reopening the old scandal.

“A private reparations scheme,” Mara said.

“Without telling the people being repaired,” I replied.

Adrian shook his head.

“And while maintaining control.”

That was the key.

Julian never returned the money.

He converted stolen capital into influence.

He decided which businesses received support.

Which careers got introductions.

Which people crossed paths.

Who owed whom.

The network did not merely preserve wealth.

It created dependency.

Celia turned another page toward the camera.

“My father believed Julian planned to consolidate everything into LatticeForge.”

Gavin looked up.

“Why?”

“Because it was the most scalable asset.”

According to Marcus’s notes, Julian believed LatticeForge could eventually become valuable enough to absorb losses, settle old claims, and legitimize the entire structure through a future acquisition or public offering.

That explained why so much attention surrounded Gavin’s company.

It was not only his dream.

It was intended to become the exit.

I asked Celia whether her father mentioned her.

She nodded slowly.

“He wanted me nowhere near Gavin.”

That surprised everyone.

“He knew Julian had contacted me after college,” she said. “He told me never to accept professional help from him.”

“But you did.”

“Years later.”

“Why?”

“Because my father was dead, and I thought his warnings were paranoia.”

Her voice broke slightly.

“I thought he spent his final years obsessed with old people and old money.”

I understood more than she knew.

Children often mistake the things parents refuse to explain for irrationality.

Celia found a letter from Marcus addressed to her but never sent.

He apologized for involving her identity in early asset-recovery structures.

That explained Bellwether’s original paperwork.

Marcus had planned for Celia eventually to inherit his disputed interests.

After his death, someone reused those documents to create a live company.

Someone with access to his files.

Possibly Raymond.

Possibly Evelyn.

Possibly Julian.

The ambiguity remained.

Then Celia held up another document.

“This is the part you need.”

A signed statement from Marcus.

Dated nine months before his death.

In it, he said he had personally witnessed Julian Voss instruct Leonard Shaw to alter custodial records after the eighteen million disappeared.

Not before.

After.

My attention sharpened.

“What does that mean?”

Adrian answered first.

“It may mean Julian didn’t initiate the original diversion.”

Marcus believed Raymond redirected the funds initially.

Then Julian discovered what had happened and altered documentation to conceal the true path.

That would explain why both narratives contained pieces of truth.

Raymond’s credentials had been used.

Possibly by Raymond himself.

But later records were still forged.

Julian might not have started the theft.

He may have covered it up.

“Why?” Gavin asked.

Celia scanned the statement.

Marcus’s theory was that Julian saw an opportunity.

Rather than report Raymond, he helped make the money disappear permanently.

Then he positioned himself to control whatever returned.

“That makes no sense,” Lydia said.

“It does if Julian believed Raymond’s diversion was temporary,” Mara replied.

Raymond may have moved the money for a reason unrelated to theft.

Julian then turned a temporary unauthorized transfer into a permanent hidden network.

We needed Raymond’s version.

But Raymond was dead.

His Prague devices became more important than ever.

Czech investigators agreed to share limited information through legal channels.

One laptop contained encrypted files.

One phone had been wiped.

The second phone had not.

Its final outgoing call was to Julian.

Its final incoming message came from an unknown number.

Only four words.

You should have stopped.

The number had been masked through an internet service.

No immediate identification.

Then investigators found a draft email Raymond never sent.

Addressed to me.

Sloane,

Julian will tell you I started it.

He will be right.

I read the sentence three times.

Raymond admitted initiating the transfer.

Not stealing.

Initiating.

The email continued.

He said the partnership’s acquisition target was fraudulent.

He discovered evidence hours before closing that the seller had concealed catastrophic liabilities.

Thomas and Marcus were already committed to proceeding.

Raymond panicked.

Instead of stopping the deal openly, he diverted the capital into the side structure to prevent the acquisition.

It was reckless.

Unauthorized.

Possibly criminal.

But according to him, temporary.

He intended to return the funds once he proved the deal was poisoned.

Then Julian intervened.

By morning, Raymond no longer controlled the money.

“I started the fire,” Raymond wrote. “Julian discovered he could own the smoke.”

I sat very still.

For twenty-seven years, everyone had asked who stole eighteen million dollars.

The better question was who prevented it from coming back.

Raymond’s draft included one more revelation.

He had contacted Julian in Prague because he wanted the network dismantled.

He demanded that Julian release all remaining records, return disputed assets, and stop controlling Gavin, Celia, and me.

In exchange, Raymond promised not to release evidence implicating Evelyn.

I looked at Lydia.

“What did Evelyn do?”

No one knew.

The answer came two hours later from a Prague file.

A photograph.

Evelyn standing beside Raymond outside a hotel six months earlier.

They had been meeting.

Regularly.

Adrian traced travel records.

Prague.

Vienna.

Zurich.

London.

At least seven meetings over three years.

Evelyn had been working with Raymond.

Not Julian.

Or perhaps both.

Then Celia gasped on the video feed.

She had found another page in Marcus’s portfolio.

A list of coded payments.

One entry matched a LatticeForge transfer from eighteen months earlier.

The recipient was marked E.P.

Amount: $2.4 million.

Gavin stared at the screen.

“I never authorized that.”

His CFO apparently had.

Using an executive approval token assigned to Gavin.

He denied providing it.

The token had been accessed from inside LatticeForge headquarters.

On a night Gavin was in Miami with Celia.

I looked at her.

She looked away.

The date was one of their earliest secret trips.

While Gavin was distracted by the affair, someone inside his company moved $2.4 million.

Then another detail surfaced.

The transaction ultimately paid for something called Project Haven.

No one recognized the name.

Celia searched her father’s papers.

Nothing.

Adrian searched Raymond’s files.

One reference.

Haven protects the heirs if Voss loses control.

My pulse accelerated.

“What heirs?”

We found the answer in an attachment.

Three names.

Gavin Mercer.

Celia Hart.

Sloane Vale.

Project Haven had been created for us.

And according to the incorporation documents, the person who established it was Evelyn Park.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: Project Haven Was Supposed to Protect Us From Julian,
