warrant-assisted request through the proper authorities.

Evelyn’s travel records showed she had flown to Washington.

Then the trail shifted.

A private car transported her to Virginia.

The destination was a property owned through a trust associated with Julian Voss.

Father and daughter together.

Investigators did not rush in.

There was still no evidence of immediate danger.

Instead, they focused on documents.

If Evelyn had accessed my father’s safe-deposit box, what had she taken?

Thomas found the second book.

Raymond’s note finally had context.

The first “book” was the public partnership ledger.

The second was apparently a private transaction ledger kept by my father.

He had tracked money outside ordinary accounting systems because he suspected internal records were being manipulated.

If the ledger existed and Evelyn removed it after his death, then its contents could explain almost everything.

We searched Raymond’s recovered files for references.

A photograph emerged.

Not the ledger itself.

One page.

My father’s handwriting filled the margins.

At the center were transaction numbers connected to the original eighteen million.

Beside them were payments routed years later into Voss-controlled entities.

Then one notation made Mara lean toward the screen.

LF seed.

LatticeForge seed.

The date was four years before Gavin founded LatticeForge.

“That’s impossible,” I said.

Unless LF meant something else.

Adrian enlarged the note.

Next to it my father had written Gavin Mercer.

Four years before LatticeForge existed, Thomas Vale had written my future husband’s name beside a transaction labeled LatticeForge seed.

I felt dizzy.

“My father knew Gavin?”

Lydia looked just as shocked.

“That can’t be right.”

Gavin had been in graduate school then.

He had not met me.

He had not founded his company.

And yet someone was already setting aside money under his name.

We traced the transaction.

The funds originated in an entity linked to Julian Voss.

They moved through Northstar’s predecessor.

Then disappeared into a private investment account.

Years later, almost the same amount surfaced as part of LatticeForge’s earliest financing.

Gavin had always told me his first serious capital came from personal savings, friends, and a small angel syndicate.

That story was incomplete.

“Did you know?” I asked him.

He stared at the transaction record.

“No.”

I believed his surprise.

Whether I believed anything else remained uncertain.

Lydia covered her mouth.

“My God.”

“What?”

She looked at Gavin.

Then at me.

“Julian used to ask about him.”

“About Gavin?”

“When he was a teenager.”

Gavin turned sharply.

“What are you talking about?”

Lydia told us Julian had maintained contact after Gavin’s father died.

He occasionally asked about school.

Interests.

College.

Whether Gavin showed aptitude for business.

She had interpreted it as concern from an old family acquaintance.

“Why would he care?”

Lydia whispered, “Because of the money.”

The old partnership theft had not merely enriched someone.

A portion had apparently been reserved.

Invested.

Allowed to grow.

Then directed toward Gavin years later.

LatticeForge had been founded with capital descended from the original eighteen million.

That meant the company at the center of my divorce existed partly because of the theft that destroyed my father’s partnership before I was old enough to understand money.

My marriage and Gavin’s company were no longer parallel stories.

They were branches of the same one.

Then Celia’s attorney called.

She had found something in her father’s belongings.

A small notebook hidden behind the backing of an old framed photograph.

Marcus Hart’s handwriting.

The entries were brief.

Mostly initials and dates.

One page contained the words Thomas has second ledger.

Another said Julian knows.

Then, months later:

Evelyn took copy.

Not original.

I stood.

“If Evelyn only took a copy from the safe-deposit box, where is the original?”

No one answered.

We reread Raymond’s video transcript.

Then his letter.

Then my father’s note.

One phrase appeared twice.

Only if the money is found.

Mara suddenly looked at me.

“The envelope.”

“What about it?”

“The one your father left for you.
