That wasn’t arranged.”

Mara corrected her.

“Julian Voss sat on the foundation’s advisory council that year.”

Lydia stared at her.

I remembered the dinner.

I had attended because Meridian Crest sponsored the event.

Gavin was seated at my table after a last-minute seating adjustment.

At the time, I thought the coincidence charming.

Now I wanted the old seating records.

We obtained them the next day.

Gavin had originally been assigned to another table.

His placement changed forty-eight hours before the event.

The request came from the office of an advisory council member.

Julian Voss.

I sat in Mara’s conference room looking at the email until the letters blurred.

Maybe Voss had simply wanted Gavin seated near finance professionals.

Maybe he had seen me as useful to a young founder.

Maybe our eventual relationship had nothing to do with him.

But Raymond’s words were harder to dismiss.

Do not assume the children were brought together by chance.

There was one person who might know more.

Gavin.

His lawyers resisted.

Eventually, under pressure from the board investigation and his own need to demonstrate cooperation, Gavin agreed to a formal interview.

I did not attend.

Mara did.

She returned five hours later carrying notes and a headache.

“He admitted Julian encouraged him to attend the Ellison Foundation dinner.”

I closed my eyes.

“Did he know I would be there?”

“He says Julian mentioned you.”

“What exactly?”

“That you were smart, well connected, and someone he should meet.”

I laughed bitterly.

“Romantic.”

“That doesn’t mean Gavin married you for money.”

“No. It means our first meeting was engineered.”

“There’s a difference.”

“I know.”

And that difference mattered.

I needed to know what Gavin had chosen and what had merely been arranged around him.

Mara continued.

Gavin admitted that Julian served as an informal mentor.

He also admitted something else.

Julian had introduced him to Celia.

I stood.

“When?”

“Before she joined LatticeForge.”

“How long before?”

“Approximately four months.”

Celia had told me she met Gavin through the company.

Either she lied—

or Gavin did.

We brought Celia in with her attorney.

Her reaction seemed genuine.

She had met Julian Voss once at a communications conference.

He later emailed her about an opportunity at LatticeForge.

“He told me the company needed someone capable of controlling its public narrative.”

“Controlling?” Mara asked.

“That was his word.”

“Did he mention Gavin?”

“Yes.”

“In what context?”

“That Gavin was brilliant but impulsive.”

Celia gave a humorless smile.

“He got that part right.”

She insisted her first personal interaction with Gavin occurred during interviews for the job.

Months later, the affair began.

I asked whether Julian knew about the relationship.

She hesitated.

“He suspected.”

“How?”

“He asked me about Gavin.”

“When?”

“After a conference last year.”

“What did you say?”

“That things were complicated.”

“And Julian?”

“He told me complicated relationships often reveal where loyalty actually sits.”

The sentence did not sound accidental.

Celia looked pale.

“I thought he was talking about my career.”

Maybe he had been.

Maybe not.

Investigators then compared dates.

The life insurance policy on me was opened six weeks after that conversation.

Bellwether made its first premium payment three weeks later.

Celia’s identity was embedded in Bellwether’s ownership records.

My signature appeared on the policy.

Lydia’s Northstar benefited through the trust.

And Julian Voss had contact with almost everyone involved.

The pattern was too broad for a simple affair.

Too old for Gavin alone.

Too deliberate for Lydia’s improvisation.

Then we received material from Raymond’s farmhouse.

Among his papers was a ledger.

Not financial in the ordinary sense.

Names.

Dates.

Meetings.

Payments.

At the top of several pages were initials.

JV.

LM.

MH.

TV.

RV.

Then later:

GM.

CH.

SV.

Our initials.

Gavin Mercer.

Celia Hart.

Sloane Vale.

Someone had been tracking us alongside the original partners.

A red mark appeared beside certain dates.

One was the Ellison Foundation dinner where I met Gavin.

One was the date Celia joined LatticeForge.

One was the date Gavin and Celia began their affair.

And one was the date of my father’s death.

I stared at that last mark.

“My father died from an aneurysm.”

Mara nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why would Raymond mark it?”

“We don’t know.”

The next page contained a handwritten sentence.

Thomas found the second book.

I looked at Adrian.

“What second book?”

He shook his head.

No one knew.

We searched my father’s old records.

Nothing.

Storage boxes.

Nothing.

His office files.

Nothing.

Then Nora called.

She had remembered something.

Near the end of my father’s life, he began visiting a bank downtown every Thursday morning.

Not for business.

Not for investments.

He told Nora he was “checking on insurance.”

That phrase made me sit upright.

The bank still existed.

Its records showed Thomas Vale had maintained a safe-deposit box there.

The box was closed six days after his death.

I had not closed it.

Mara’s firm had not closed it.

The signature on the closure form looked like mine.

It was not.

And the person who presented identification to gain access had used a driver’s license issued in my name.

The bank retained one security image.

A woman stood at the counter.

Dark coat.

Hair pulled back.

Face turned partially away.

Not me.

Adrian enhanced what he could.

The woman was older than I had been then.

Approximately Lydia’s age.

But the image was too poor to identify her conclusively.

I showed it to Lydia.

She stared for a long time.

Then she shook her head.

“That isn’t me.”

“Can you prove where you were?”

“I don’t know.
