Vendor obligations were increasing. Several contracts had underperformed.

And millions of dollars had traveled through transactions now under review.

A director named Evelyn Park explained that the board had believed Gavin had access to additional private financing.

“From where?”

“Northstar.”

I stared at her.

Northstar had not merely received funds.

Gavin had represented it as a source of capital too.

“Did you verify that?”

Evelyn’s expression gave me the answer.

“Not sufficiently.”

The board had trusted Gavin.

So had I.

So had Celia.

So, in a different way, had Lydia.

Gavin’s greatest talent had always been making certainty sound like proof.

Afterward, Evelyn apologized for another reason.

Gavin had portrayed my early loans as vanity investments—a wealthy wife wanting involvement in her husband’s promising startup.

I almost admired the consistency.

To Lydia, Gavin had supported me.

To Celia, I was the less successful spouse.

To his board, I was a dilettante investor.

He had invented a different version of me for every audience.

Every version made him larger.

Three days later, investigators completed a preliminary analysis of Northstar’s ownership.

Mara came to my house.

Approximately sixty percent of its beneficial interest appeared connected to a trust associated with Lydia.

“And the remaining forty?”

Mara pushed a folder toward me.

My name was printed inside.

SLOANE VALE.

I stared at it.

“I was disturbing in its simplicity.

My financial reputation could lend credibility to transactions that otherwise might attract scrutiny.

My wealth.

My position.

My history.

Someone had not merely used my money.

Someone had apparently used my identity.

There was another signature.

Again, it looked like mine.

Again, I knew it wasn’t.

That night, sleep became impossible.

At two in the morning, I went downstairs for tea and found an old wedding photograph while searching a drawer.

Gavin and I looked impossibly young.

He was watching me in the picture.

For years, I had wondered when that version of him disappeared.

Now I wondered how much of him I had ever understood.

My phone rang from an unknown number.

Gavin.

He was calling from another device.

I told him to speak through attorneys.

He begged me to listen.

Then he said something unexpected.

“My mother is lying.”

“About what?”

“Northstar.”

According to Gavin, Lydia had handled financial paperwork when LatticeForge was young and understaffed.

She had retained access long after she should have lost it.

He admitted knowing that Northstar existed.

He also admitted knowing about an insurance policy.

“On me?”

“I thought it was part of a financial structure.”

“I don’t work for LatticeForge.”

“I know.”

“Then why insure me?”

“I didn’t understand the final arrangement.”

The answer was so inadequate that neither of us pretended otherwise.

He insisted he had never wanted me harmed.

I told him Lydia had used almost exactly those words.

That silenced him.

Then he offered one piece of information.

Bellwether was not his.

“Whose is it?”

“I don’t know.”

I nearly ended the call.

Before I could, he told me to investigate a date from three years earlier.

February 12.

That was when Lydia had supposedly told him she had found someone capable of permanently solving LatticeForge’s cash problems.

The call ended.

I gave the information to Mara.

By morning, investigators confirmed Bellwether had been incorporated on February 12 three years earlier.

Not by Gavin.

Not directly by Lydia.

The underlying authorization carried another name.

Celia Hart.

That seemed impossible.

Celia had not worked at LatticeForge three years earlier.

According to her account, she had not even met Gavin then.

Either she had lied about everything—

or someone had used her identity just as someone had used mine.

Investigators demanded older records.

Two days later, Lydia’s attorney produced correspondence that changed the investigation again.

An old email included a scanned copy of Celia’s passport.

The message instructed Lydia to use Celia’s profile for what it called a secondary structure.

The sender was Marcus Hart.

Celia’s father.

There was only one problem.

Marcus was supposed to have been dead by the time that email was sent.

The evidence eventually suggested someone else had used his account after his death.

But that was not the strangest discovery.

Marcus and Lydia had known each other decades earlier.

They had been business partners.

That meant Celia’s connection to LatticeForge might not have begun with Gavin at all.

Someone had placed her near the company.

Someone had been constructing these entities long before my divorce.

Then Adrian’s team found an old photograph.

Four people stood outside a modest office building.

A much younger Lydia.

Marcus Hart.

A third man I recognized instantly.

Raymond Vale.

My father’s older brother.

Uncle Raymond had vanished from our family when I was twelve after a financial scandal no adult had ever properly explained to me.

I looked at Mara.

“What does Raymond have to do with Lydia?”

Instead of answering, she placed an old partnership agreement in front of me.

Four signatures appeared at the bottom.

Lydia Mercer.

Marcus Hart.

Raymond Vale.

And Thomas Vale.

My father.

I read his name again.

My father had died when I was twenty-two. He had never once told me that he knew Lydia before I married her son.

The partnership was twenty-seven years old.

So was the dispute attached to it.

Eighteen million dollars had disappeared.

The money had never been fully recovered.

Until investigators began tracing the assets behind Northstar.

I looked again at the photograph.

At Lydia.

At Marcus.

At Raymond.

At my father.

My marriage had not created this story.

Neither had Gavin’s affair.

Neither had LatticeForge.

Whatever had been hidden inside Northstar began before Gavin and I had even met.

And the following morning, Lydia finally agreed to explain it.

She had only one condition.

I had to be in the room.

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: Lydia Finally Told Me Why My Father’s Name Was Buried Inside Northstar, but One Missing Partner Changed Everything We Thought We Knew

For several seconds, the elevator seemed to move without me. “My life?” “Yes.” “How much?” Mara tried to slow me down.
