Celia began accompanying him to industry dinners and charity events while our lawyers were still exchanging settlement documents. Photographs appeared online occasionally, although neither of them publicly described their relationship.

Lydia handled the situation differently.

She stopped calling me.

Not once did she ask what Gavin had done or whether I was all right. When we finally spoke briefly through circumstances neither of us could avoid, she described the end of the marriage as something that had simply reached its natural conclusion.

Seven years reduced to an administrative expiration.

Then she charged a spa treatment to my card.

I was sitting at my desk when the notification appeared.

I stared at it for several seconds.

Then I laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because the alternative was calling her.

The charges continued.

Restaurants.

Clothes.

A weekend hotel.

Beauty treatments.

One designer purchase large enough that Mara noticed it while reviewing financial records.

“You know you can terminate Lydia’s supplementary card,” she said.

“I know.”

“Do you want to?”

“Yes.”

Mara waited.

“But?”

“I’ll do it when the divorce is final.”

She studied me across the conference table.

“Sloane, you don’t have to prove anything by tolerating this.”

“I’m not.”

“Then why leave it active?”

“Because I don’t want Gavin claiming I changed longstanding financial arrangements during negotiations to pressure him.”

Mara considered that.

Then nodded.

“So you’re waiting.”

“I’m waiting.”

Gavin’s card remained active for the same reason.

He used it less extravagantly than Lydia, but with extraordinary confidence.

Airport lounges.

Hotels.

Client dinners.

Repairs.

Service on an expensive watch.

Then came a florist charge for $312.

I looked at the merchant name and wondered, briefly, whether Celia had any idea who had purchased her flowers.

The thought bothered me less than I expected.

By then I had learned something useful about betrayal.

The first wound belongs to the act.

The repeated wounds often come from insisting on touching it afterward.

So I stopped.

My attention moved instead toward the settlement and toward LatticeForge.

That company mattered beyond Gavin.

Hundreds of people depended on it for salaries and benefits. Engineers had relocated families to work there. Young employees had stock options they believed might someday change their lives.

I refused to use those people as leverage.

Years earlier, when LatticeForge was still fragile, I had provided financing through properly documented loans. I also held a minority equity position. Gavin had always spoken publicly about building the company through relentless entrepreneurship.

That was true.

It simply wasn’t the whole truth.

My capital had helped keep the lights on during periods when his confidence exceeded the company’s cash.

During negotiations, Gavin became intensely focused on protecting LatticeForge from any disruption caused by our divorce.

On that point, we agreed.

Our lawyers structured the settlement carefully.

My equity interest remained documented.

Existing loan obligations remained legally enforceable.

Personal assets were divided.

The house was dealt with.

Investments were separated.

Gavin kept what belonged to him.

I kept what belonged to me.

What the settlement did not contain was any requirement that I continue financing Gavin Mercer, his mother, his girlfriend, or the lifestyle they had come to associate with his success.

The divorce became final on a Tuesday.

There was nothing cinematic about it.

No screaming outside the courthouse.

No final accusation.

No desperate embrace.

Paperwork passed from one set of hands to another. Questions were answered. Signatures were checked.

At 10:42 that morning, I stopped being Gavin’s wife.

Outside, the sky was pale and almost offensively ordinary.

Mara walked beside me down the courthouse steps.

“How are you doing?”

I considered lying.

Instead I searched for the closest description.

“Lighter.”

“That’s good.”

“I didn’t realize how much of his life I was carrying until someone told me I could put it down.”

Mara smiled.

“What comes first?”

I already had my phone in my hand.

I called private banking.

The representative verified my identity, then asked what she could do for me.

“There are two supplementary cardholders attached to my primary account.”

She confirmed the names.

Gavin Mercer.

Lydia Mercer.

“I want both cards terminated immediately.”

“Certainly.
