him?”

“Yes.”

“You answered fast.”

“Because love can exist alongside terrible judgment.”

Ava looked at him.

“Like again.

He brought copies from the ledger.

One entry bothered him.

Ava delivery — M.G. — hold.

Emily looked up.

“Delivery?”

“Possibly the ledger.”

“Michael put it in Ava’s box?”

“That is our working theory.”

“But why?”

Ramos pointed at the date.

Seven years earlier.

Long before Michael married Laura.

Emily stared.

“No.”

Ramos nodded.

“That’s the issue.”

If the entry referred to the ledger, Michael had used Ava as a hiding place before he ever publicly entered Laura’s life.

Emily felt cold.

“He was already close enough to access her mail.”

“Or someone was.”

“Who?”

Ramos turned the page.

A second notation.

Delivery via M.V.

Marissa Vale.

Emily stared.

“Marissa?”

“Yes.”

That changed it again.

Michael may have instructed Marissa to place something with Ava.

Marissa may have believed she was preserving evidence.

Or hiding leverage.

Or following orders.

Ramos had recovered old email backups from her files.

One exchange referenced a “packet for A.”

Michael:

Put it somewhere Laura will never look.

Marissa:

That’s her daughter.

Michael:

Exactly.

Emily’s face hardened.

“He used Ava because everyone treated her grief as private territory.”

Ramos nodded.

No one opened her letters.

No one searched her keepsake box.

The perfect hiding place.

Then came Marissa’s response.

I’ll hold it.

Michael:

No. Too risky.

Marissa:

Using a child is worse.

Michael:

Using a house no one searches is practical.

Emily felt sick.

“What did Marissa do?”

Ramos showed her the next email.

Nothing further.

No confirmation.

Yet the ledger had ended up with Ava.

“So she did it anyway?”

“Possibly.”

Emily remembered Marissa’s guilt.

Her later attempts to gather proof.

Maybe this was the first line she crossed and regretted.

Or maybe someone else completed the delivery.

Ramos had more.

A mailing receipt.

Pennsylvania to Helen’s address.

Sender name false.

Date matching the ledger envelope.

Purchased with a card tied to Marissa’s consulting account.

Emily exhaled.

“She sent it.”

“Yes.”

“Did Laura know?”

“No evidence.”

“Did Michael?”

“He ordered it.”

So the ledger had been hidden inside Ava’s life deliberately.

Then left there for years.

Why?

Emily asked.

Ramos answered, “Insurance.”

Again.

Everyone kept insurance against everyone.

Michael may have wanted a copy outside his possession in case Owen turned on him.

Marissa may have agreed because she wanted leverage against Michael.

Owen may have known.

No one trusted anyone.

Emily looked at the page.

“And Ava carried all of it without knowing.”

“Yes.”

That hurt more than she expected.

A child used as storage for adult secrets.

She called Daniel.

He put her on speaker with Ava’s permission.

Emily explained carefully.

Ava sat very still.

When Emily finished, Ava whispered, “Marissa put it in my things?”

“Most likely.”

“Because Michael told her to.”

“Yes.”

Ava looked at Daniel.

“And Mom had no idea.”

“As far as we know.”

Ava’s eyes filled.

“So even the letters weren’t just Mom.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Some were.”

“Some weren’t.”

“No.”

Ava looked lost.

She had spent years building her identity around communication she believed came directly from Laura.

Now even that archive was contaminated.

Emily spoke through the phone.

“Your memories are still yours.”

Ava looked toward the don’t know what to believe.”

“That is different from believing nothing.”

Ava closed her eyes.

Daniel watched her breathe.

Slowly.

Then she asked, “Can I talk to Mom?”

Daniel did not answer.

He looked at Emily’s name on the screen.

Emily said nothing.

This belonged to Ava.

Daniel asked, “Do you want to?”

Ava nodded.

“Yes.”

Ramos arranged it.

Laura’s location remained undisclosed.

The call came through a secure line.

Ava answered alone at first.

Daniel waited in the kitchen.

Emily was not part of the call.

For almost ten minutes, Daniel heard only fragments.

“Did you send this one?”

“No.”

“What about the one with the photograph?”

“Yes.”

“The birthday for her.”

“Why?”

“He said he wanted to send Ava a gift without it coming directly from us.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Michael had been checking whether the old channel remained intact.

The hiding place.

The delivery route.

Laura continued.

“I didn’t think anything of
