height.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing distinctive.<\/p>\n<p>Then Emily noticed the car.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ramos paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe rear closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSharon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSharon had a sticker like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ramos shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLots of people do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel caught the restraint.<\/p>\n<p>Emily was not accusing.<\/p>\n<p>Only recognizing.<\/p>\n<p>Ramos checked the vehicle registration information they had.<\/p>\n<p>Sharon currently drove an SUV.<\/p>\n<p>Not this sedan.<\/p>\n<p>Mark had two vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>One was a dark sedan.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at Ramos.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMark.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Again, not proof.<\/p>\n<p>The car model looked similar.<\/p>\n<p>But Mark was being watched.<\/p>\n<p>Ramos immediately checked.<\/p>\n<p>Mark had been with his attorney during the relevant hour.<\/p>\n<p>The vehicle was parked outside the office.<\/p>\n<p>Not him.<\/p>\n<p>Another overlap.<\/p>\n<p>Another dead end.<\/p>\n<p>Emily went to the hotel.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel left when she asked.<\/p>\n<p>At 2:00 a.m., she lay awake staring at the ceiling.<\/p>\n<p>Her phone remained face down.<\/p>\n<p>She wanted to call Nina.<\/p>\n<p>Demand answers.<\/p>\n<p>Ask whether she had told anyone the hotel name.<\/p>\n<p>Then remembered Nina did not know.<\/p>\n<p>Good.<\/p>\n<p>At 2:16, the hotel room phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Emily sat upright.<\/p>\n<p>She did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>It stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Then rang again.<\/p>\n<p>She called the front desk from her mobile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid someone ask for my room?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The clerk sounded apologetic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe caller knew your full name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Of course.<\/p>\n<p>She called Ramos again.<\/p>\n<p>The hotel moved her room.<\/p>\n<p>Security checked the floor.<\/p>\n<p>No one suspicious appeared.<\/p>\n<p>The calls originated externally.<\/p>\n<p>At 3:04, Daniel texted.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m awake if you need anything.<\/p>\n<p>Emily stared.<\/p>\n<p>She did not ask how he knew she would be awake.<\/p>\n<p>Probably because he was too.<\/p>\n<p>She typed:<\/p>\n<p>Someone called the hotel room.<\/p>\n<p>Three dots appeared immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Then disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>Finally:<\/p>\n<p>Are police there?<\/p>\n<p>Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Do you want me there?<\/p>\n<p>Emily looked at the screen.<\/p>\n<p>Not I\u2019m coming.<\/p>\n<p>Do you want me there?<\/p>\n<p>She replied:<\/p>\n<p>No.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel answered:<\/p>\n<p>Okay.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing else.<\/p>\n<p>Oddly, that helped.<\/p>\n<p>The next morning, Ramos called before seven.<\/p>\n<p>They had traced a key detail.<\/p>\n<p>The hotel call came through an internet number created only hours earlier.<\/p>\n<p>The account used a payment card.<\/p>\n<p>Prepaid.<\/p>\n<p>But purchased physically.<\/p>\n<p>Security footage from the store showed the buyer.<\/p>\n<p>This time the face was clearer.<\/p>\n<p>Not Michael.<\/p>\n<p>Not Mark.<\/p>\n<p>Not Sharon.<\/p>\n<p>Not Peter.<\/p>\n<p>Not Samuel Reed.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at the still image when Ramos sent it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily did.<\/p>\n<p>Her face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d Daniel asked.<\/p>\n<p>She stared at the man.<\/p>\n<p>Late forties.<\/p>\n<p>Gray Brightline.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOperations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at Ramos.<\/p>\n<p>Emily continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe handled client files. Building access. Vendor contracts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her mind moved quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Craig had known Marissa.<\/p>\n<p>Of course.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone at Brightline knew Marissa.<\/p>\n<p>He had also managed archived project records.<\/p>\n<p>Including the Whitmore residence consultation.<\/p>\n<p>Ramos asked, \u201cWhen did you last see him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYears ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny relationship?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConflict?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he know Laura?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly through the project.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichael?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have no idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ramos began checking.<\/p>\n<p>Within an hour, Craig\u2019s name appeared in Owen\u2019s ledger.<\/p>\n<p>C.N.<\/p>\n<p>Several entries.<\/p>\n<p>Not client.<\/p>\n<p>Vendor.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat vendor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ramos found corresponding invoices.<\/p>\n<p>Data retrieval.<\/p>\n<p>Records access.<\/p>\n<p>Emily felt sick.<\/p>\n<p>Craig had supplied Owen with information.<\/p>\n<p>Not street surveillance.<\/p>\n<p>Internal files.<\/p>\n<p>Old employment data.<\/p>\n<p>Client histories.<\/p>\n<p>Addresses from archives.<\/p>\n<p>The first time Laura asked Owen to look into Emily, Owen had gone to Craig.<\/p>\n<p>Years later, Michael had retained him.<\/p>\n<p>Emily stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s how my old work information stayed current.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd possibly how Marissa knew things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ramos\u2019s voice became grim.<\/p>\n<p>Craig was not just historical.<\/p>\n<p>A payment had been made to him two days earlier.<\/p>\n<p>From an account connected to Michael.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Michael hired him again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLikely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo photograph Emily?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ramos sent officers to Craig\u2019s address.<\/p>\n<p>He was gone.<\/p>\n<p>His apartment contained mostly ordinary belongings.<\/p>\n<p>But in a desk drawer they found a recent printed photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Emily leaving the law office six months earlier.<\/p>\n<p>The same surveillance period tied to Mark.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared at the image.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Craig worked for Michael and whoever answered Mark through Owen\u2019s account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The operation had become clearer.<\/p>\n<p>Michael controlled the account.<\/p>\n<p>Craig performed ground work.<\/p>\n<p>Mark paid into the system.<\/p>\n<p>Marissa monitored parts of it.<\/p>\n<p>Nina unknowingly supplied family information.<\/p>\n<p>Every thread crossed there.<\/p>\n<p>Emily asked the question no one had yet answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy contact me now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ramos paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ledger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Craig may have been told to locate it.<\/p>\n<p>When Michael realized it had resurfaced, he needed to know where Emily was.<\/p>\n<p>The threatening text may not have been about her marriage at all.<\/p>\n<p>It may have been about evidence.<\/p>\n<p>Emily looked at Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were never supposed to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He frowned.<\/p>\n<p>She continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat if that means the apartment?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe marriage?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ramos looked thoughtful.<\/p>\n<p>Emily said, \u201cMichael\u2019s risk model depended on me staying with Daniel.
