It does not justify conduct.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily appreciated the sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Exactly.<\/p>\n<p>Explanation without absolution.<\/p>\n<p>Then Ramos showed them a copy of an old memo found in Michael\u2019s storage unit.<\/p>\n<p>Written by Richard Grant years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas Whitmore cannot be trusted to divide proceeds honestly. Jobs. Extra copies. Who bought what.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ramos asked, \u201cPhysical?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichael thinks Marissa found it before she died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ramos exchanged a look with Emily.<\/p>\n<p>The storage unit had held files.<\/p>\n<p>But no master ledger.<\/p>\n<p>If it existed, it could connect every hidden payment.<\/p>\n<p>Laura.<\/p>\n<p>Michael.<\/p>\n<p>Mark.<\/p>\n<p>Possibly others.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel asked, \u201cWhat happened at the house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichael kept asking where Marissa\u2019s box went.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you tell him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat I gave it away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you say to who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura began crying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>The reassurance sounded instinctive.<\/p>\n<p>Not controlling.<\/p>\n<p>Just relief.<\/p>\n<p>Laura continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said everything is collapsing because people keep handing the truth to the wrong people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ava whispered, \u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura heard her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAva?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The girl froze.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>She shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>Not yet.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel did not tell Laura she was there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Michael say about the ledger?\u201d Ramos asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat whoever has it controls what happens next.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily felt sick at the phrasing.<\/p>\n<p>Control.<\/p>\n<p>Always control.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is Michael now?\u201d Ramos asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he follow you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ramos began coordinating officers to Laura\u2019s location.<\/p>\n<p>Then Laura said something that changed the room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said Marissa gave the ledger to someone who would understand why it mattered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI asked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura\u2019s voice broke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said, \u2018The only person in your old family who ever kept records properly.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>Emily understood first.<\/p>\n<p>The black folder.<\/p>\n<p>Household accounts.<\/p>\n<p>Receipts.<\/p>\n<p>Dates.<\/p>\n<p>Documentation.<\/p>\n<p>But Laura said old family.<\/p>\n<p>Not current.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel whispered, \u201cMy mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ava shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandma doesn\u2019t keep records properly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stopped.<\/p>\n<p>She was right.<\/p>\n<p>Helen misplaced receipts constantly.<\/p>\n<p>Emily looked at Ava.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ava stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The blue box.<\/p>\n<p>The letters.<\/p>\n<p>Dates.<\/p>\n<p>Photographs.<\/p>\n<p>Ticket stubs.<\/p>\n<p>Years of preserved evidence.<\/p>\n<p>Ava\u2019s face drained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel moved toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAva.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She backed away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom sent me letters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ramos became very still.<\/p>\n<p>Ava looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe sent pictures. Papers. I thought it was a joke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily stared at the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>Ramos told her not to open it until photographed.<\/p>\n<p>They documented it.<\/p>\n<p>Then, under instruction, Ava opened the flap.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was not a letter.<\/p>\n<p>It was a small leather notebook.<\/p>\n<p>Old.<\/p>\n<p>Black.<\/p>\n<p>The first page carried Owen Pike\u2019s initials.<\/p>\n<p>The second contained dates and payment codes.<\/p>\n<p>The third listed names.<\/p>\n<p>Laura Whitmore.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Grant.<\/p>\n<p>Mark Whitmore.<\/p>\n<p>Marissa Vale.<\/p>\n<p>Sharon Whitmore.<\/p>\n<p>Helen Whitmore.<\/p>\n<p>And others.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared.<\/p>\n<p>Ava turned another page.<\/p>\n<p>There were columns.<\/p>\n<p>Paid.<\/p>\n<p>Requested.<\/p>\n<p>Delivered.<\/p>\n<p>Retained.<\/p>\n<p>Emily felt cold.<\/p>\n<p>The ledger.<\/p>\n<p>Michael had hidden it in Ava\u2019s possession years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Possibly because no one would search a grieving teenager\u2019s keepsake box.<\/p>\n<p>Possibly because he wanted it preserved without Laura knowing.<\/p>\n<p>Possibly because he intended to retrieve it later.<\/p>\n<p>Ava\u2019s hands shook.<\/p>\n<p>Then she reached the last written page.<\/p>\n<p>One line had been circled.<\/p>\n<p>E.C. \u2014 no further contact.
