When you\u2019re ready, we need to talk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel returned to the living room.<\/p>\n<p>Emily\u2019s letter lay on the coffee table beside the financial folder. He had read both so many times that morning the words had begun to feel engraved behind his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>His phone sat nearby.<\/p>\n<p>He picked it up and called Emily again.<\/p>\n<p>This time she answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHello?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel almost forgot everything he intended to say.<\/p>\n<p>Her voice was calm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you need?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not How are you?<\/p>\n<p>Not Are you okay?<\/p>\n<p>What do you need?<\/p>\n<p>The distance frightened him more than anger would have.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know about the camera.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel leaned forward, elbows on his knees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother saw what happened. And apparently the security camera recorded it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A long pause followed.<\/p>\n<p>When she finally spoke, her voice was painfully quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou believe the camera.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Emily\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou had me standing in front of you yesterday telling you the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd that wasn\u2019t enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou needed your mother and a recording.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Each sentence was controlled. That made them worse.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel pressed his fingers to his forehead. \u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe you\u2019re sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hope rose too quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan I come see you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t mean I\u2019m coming home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The hope disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t ask that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were going to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked around the living room.<\/p>\n<p>She knew him.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe better than he knew himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to apologize in person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor yesterday?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor more than yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily was silent.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel continued. \u201cI found the records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat records?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe folder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t leave that so you would feel guilty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you would understand what has to change financially if we separate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word struck him.<\/p>\n<p>Separate.<\/p>\n<p>Not cool off.<\/p>\n<p>Not take some space.<\/p>\n<p>Separate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmily, please.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stayed on the line.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you really plan this for eight months?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her answer came without hesitation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI tried telling you for three years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The call ended.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel remained seated long after the screen went dark.<\/p>\n<p>Upstairs, Ava had stopped moving around.<\/p>\n<p>He thought of Emily\u2019s answer.<\/p>\n<p>I tried telling you for three years.<\/p>\n<p>There had been conversations, he realized.<\/p>\n<p>Dozens.<\/p>\n<p>Emily telling him Ava had ignored her for days.<\/p>\n<p>Emily saying she felt uncomfortable at family events.<\/p>\n<p>Emily asking him to intervene after Ava deliberately excluded her from a school ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>Emily wondering why she was expected to contribute financially to decisions she was not permitted to help make.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel had treated each incident separately.<\/p>\n<p>A teenage mood.<\/p>\n<p>A stressful week.<\/p>\n<p>An awkward blended-family moment.<\/p>\n<p>By separating them, he had avoided seeing the pattern.<\/p>\n<p>The front door opened.<\/p>\n<p>Helen stepped inside without knocking.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked up. \u201cMom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought you shouldn\u2019t be alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He gave a humorless laugh. \u201cApparently being alone is something I need practice at.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Helen sat opposite him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere\u2019s Ava?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUpstairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHave you spoken to her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe has video proving Emily didn\u2019t push her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Helen\u2019s face fell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Ava lied.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared toward the staircase.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His mother looked down at her hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should have spoken yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Helen accepted the answer.<\/p>\n<p>No excuse.<\/p>\n<p>No defensive protest.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel found himself thinking that Emily had asked for something equally simple.<\/p>\n<p>Recognition.<\/p>\n<p>He stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going to see her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Helen nodded. \u201cDo you know where she is?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel did now.<\/p>\n<p>One document in the folder contained an address for renter\u2019s insurance.<\/p>\n<p>He had stared at it for several minutes before understanding.<\/p>\n<p>Emily had an apartment.<\/p>\n<p>The realization had hurt, but it also made sense of those eight months.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel drove across town beneath a gray afternoon sky.<\/p>\n<p>The apartment building was modest, three stories of pale brick with narrow balconies facing the parking lot.<\/p>\n<p>He sat in his car for almost ten minutes.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, he understood that arriving did not entitle him to be admitted.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually he went upstairs and knocked.<\/p>\n<p>Emily opened the door.<\/p>\n<p>She wore jeans and an old blue sweater he had not seen in years. Her hair was loosely tied behind her head. Cardboard boxes stood open behind her.<\/p>\n<p>She looked tired.<\/p>\n<p>But she did not look shattered.<\/p>\n<p>That unsettled him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan I come in?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily considered him before stepping aside.<\/p>\n<p>The apartment smelled faintly of fresh paint and coffee.<\/p>\n<p>A small canvas rested against one wall.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel recognized Emily\u2019s painting supplies beside it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re painting again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She followed his gaze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m trying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He remembered when she stopped.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, she had said there was nowhere to keep the easel after they remodeled the spare room for Ava.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel had accepted that explanation too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Emily leaned against the kitchen counter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should have listened to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel almost wished she would shout.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, she allowed his statements to remain exactly what they were: overdue facts.<\/p>\n<p>He stepped closer but stopped several feet away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat hurt you most?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily looked toward the window.<\/p>\n<p>He waited.<\/p>\n<p>Finally she touched the bare place on her wrist where her anniversary bracelet used to sit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t Ava accusing me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t even you asking me to apologize.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes returned to his.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was the way you looked at me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou looked at your own wife as though you were trying to decide what kind of person she really was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel lowered his gaze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told you I loved you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI still do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe that too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked up, surprised.<\/p>\n<p>Emily\u2019s expression remained composed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut love isn\u2019t useful only after somebody has packed a suitcase.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel had no answer.<\/p>\n<p>She continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI needed you beside me when standing beside me was uncomfortable. I needed you to ask one question before deciding I was guilty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI failed you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The simplicity of the answer hurt, but Daniel did not defend himself.<\/p>\n<p>For once, he let the discomfort remain where it belonged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs there any chance for us?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily looked around the small apartment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I know I\u2019m not going back to the marriage we had.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel nodded slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s fair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, Daniel. It isn\u2019t about fair. It\u2019s about whether anything actually changes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stayed another twenty minutes.<\/p>\n<p>They discussed practical matters: bills, clothes, mail, the house. Nothing romantic. Nothing resolved.<\/p>\n<p>When Daniel left, Emily did not kiss him.<\/p>\n<p>She did not promise to call.<\/p>\n<p>She simply closed the door.<\/p>\n<p>That night he returned home to find Ava sitting on the living-room floor.<\/p>\n<p>Her phone lay beside her.<\/p>\n<p>The television was off.<\/p>\n<p>Helen had gone home.<\/p>\n<p>Ava looked up as Daniel entered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you see her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs she coming back?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ava began crying.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel removed his coat but did not rush to comfort her.<\/p>\n<p>Not because he wanted to punish her.<\/p>\n<p>Because they needed the truth before comfort could become another escape.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAva.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She wiped her face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need to see the video.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her shoulders shook.<\/p>\n<p>Then she picked up the phone.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel sat beside her.<\/p>\n<p>Ava opened the message.<\/p>\n<p>The footage was grainy but clear enough.<\/p>\n<p>She walked backward while typing.<\/p>\n<p>Emily emerged carrying the pitcher.<\/p>\n<p>Their shoulders touched.<\/p>\n<p>Ava stumbled.<\/p>\n<p>The pitcher fell.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing more.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel watched twice.<\/p>\n<p>On the third viewing, he noticed something else.<\/p>\n<p>Ava looked toward the camera almost immediately after the pitcher shattered.<\/p>\n<p>She had known it was there.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel lowered the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ava covered her face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew she didn\u2019t push you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared at his daughter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ava cried harder.<\/p>\n<p>He waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy, Ava?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She lowered her hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I wanted you to choose me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel felt something cold move through him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to know you would.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWould what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChoose me over her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared.<\/p>\n<p>Ava struggled for breath between tears.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought she\u2019d apologize. She always does eventually. I thought everything would go back to normal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou accused her of hurting you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou let me throw her out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t think she\u2019d actually go!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stood and walked several steps away.<\/p>\n<p>He needed distance.<\/p>\n<p>Not from anger alone.<\/p>\n<p>From the realization that his daughter had understood the family\u2019s pattern well enough to weaponize it.<\/p>\n<p>Emily would bend.<\/p>\n<p>Emily would apologize.<\/p>\n<p>Emily would return.<\/p>\n<p>Because Emily always had.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did you need me to choose?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>Ava stared at the carpet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause she isn\u2019t Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone kept acting like I was supposed to love her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmily never asked you to call her Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe never tried to replace your mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ava\u2019s silence answered.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel sat again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen did this start?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, you do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ava wiped her nose with her sleeve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you started being happy again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>She continued before he could respond.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt felt wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat felt wrong?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ava\u2019s voice cracked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were supposed to miss Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut then Emily came, and suddenly there were dinners and trips and you laughed again. And everybody kept saying it was good for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ava clenched her hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody asked if it was good for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s anger softened, but only partly.<\/p>\n<p>Pain explained something.<\/p>\n<p>It did not erase responsibility.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you punished Emily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ava looked down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI guess.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Don\u2019t hide inside \u2018I guess.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked up.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel rarely spoke to her this way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou lied about someone putting their hands on you. You knew what that accusation would do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ava began crying again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need to understand what you\u2019re sorry for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel sat beside her but left space between them.<\/p>\n<p>Minutes passed.<\/p>\n<p>Then Ava whispered, \u201cThere\u2019s something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel turned.<\/p>\n<p>Ava\u2019s face had changed.<\/p>\n<p>The anger and defensiveness were gone.<\/p>\n<p>What remained looked younger.<\/p>\n<p>Frightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ava stared at the dark phone screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe things I thought about Emily\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey didn\u2019t all start with me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel felt the room narrow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ava shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want to talk about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAva.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel remembered what he had just learned about forcing conclusions.<\/p>\n<p>So he waited.<\/p>\n<p>Ava stood.<\/p>\n<p>At the foot of the staircase, she stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Without turning, she said, \u201cBefore Mom disappeared from our lives, she told me something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel froze.<\/p>\n<p>Laura.<\/p>\n<p>For years, Daniel had believed Ava\u2019s hostility toward Emily came from grief and loyalty to the mother she thought she had lost.<\/p>\n<p>Now Ava was suggesting something else had been planted inside that grief.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Laura tell you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ava gripped the banister.<\/p>\n<p>She looked back at him with tears still on her face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told me that someday you\u2019d find another woman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Ava\u2019s next words were barely audible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd she told me that when you did, that woman would try to take her place.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=27308\">Click here to continue reading: PART 5: Ava\u2019s Memory of Laura Turned an Old Fear Into Evidence That Someone Had Been Shaping Her Suspicion for Years<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ava locked her bedroom door.
