Uncle Daniel survived the first surgery.

Barely.

That was the word Mercer used.

Barely.

The bullet had entered high in his chest and missed his heart by less than an inch. There was internal bleeding, a collapsed lung, and enough blood loss that nobody expected to speak with him that night.

Dad had been treated for bruising and a cut above his eyebrow.

Physically, he was fine.

Emotionally, he looked hollow.

I found him sitting in a hospital waiting room with both hands clasped between his knees.

Mom sat three chairs away.

They weren't speaking.

I stopped in front of him.

"What happened?"

Dad looked up.

"Brooke called me."

"I know that part."

"She said Daniel wanted to meet."

"Which Daniel?"

"My brother."

Even now the clarification mattered.

Dad rubbed his face.

"She said he wanted the will back."

"And you went alone."

"Yes."

"Why?"

His answer came immediately.

"Because I thought I could end it."

I laughed once.

A short, exhausted sound.

"You've spent thirty years thinking that."

He looked down.

"I know."

"What did Brooke say when you arrived?"

"Not much."

"Was Daniel already there?"

"Yes."

"Armed?"

"I don't know."

"Brooke?"

Dad closed his eyes.

"Yes."

My stomach tightened.

"She had the gun?"

"At first."

"At first?"

"Daniel tried to take it from her."

"Then what?"

"They fought."

"About the case?"

"About everything."

Dad described the storage unit.

Uncle Daniel had apparently kept emergency cash, documents, account keys, and portable drives there.

Brooke wanted the metal case because it contained access information to accounts Daniel controlled outside the systems we had already found.

"How much money?"

Dad shook his head.

"I don't know."

"Did Daniel say?"

"Enough to disappear."

Mercer had joined us.

He remained standing.

"Did Brooke shoot Daniel intentionally?"

Dad's face tightened.

"I think so."

"You think?"

"They struggled. The gun went off."

"That's an accident."

"Then she picked it up."

I felt cold.

"And?"

"Daniel told her to stop."

Dad swallowed.

"She pointed it at him again."

"Did she fire again?"

"No."

"But she meant to."

"I don't know what she meant."

There it was.

Even now.

The instinct to soften.

I looked at Dad.

"Stop protecting meaning."

He flinched.

"Tell us what happened."

He nodded slowly.

"She took the case. Daniel tried to stand. She told him if he followed her she'd finish it."

Mercer's expression hardened.

"Exact words?"

"As close as I can remember."

"Then?"

"She took my phone."

"Why?"

"She knew Miranda would call."

"Did she force you to speak?"

"No."

Dad looked at me.

"I wanted you to stay away."

"For once, that was useful."

He gave a weak smile.

It disappeared immediately.

"Daniel told her the case wasn't enough."

I leaned forward.

"What did that mean?"

"He said she'd still need access codes."

"For which accounts?"

"He wouldn't say."

"Did Brooke know?"

"She said she'd get them."

"How?"

Dad stared toward the operating-room doors.

"He said, 'Not without Miranda.'"

Every muscle in my body tightened.

"Why me?"

"I don't know."

Mercer asked, "Did Daniel say her name specifically?"

"Yes."

"What exactly?"

Dad closed his eyes, reconstructing.

"He said, 'You can take every key in that box. Without Miranda, you can't move the main account.'"

I stood.

"What main account?"

Dad shook his head.

"I don't know."

Uncle Daniel had hidden nearly two million dollars in scattered structures.

Apparently that wasn't the largest pool of money.

Or the most important.

"What did Brooke say?"

Dad looked at me.

"She said, 'Then I'll make her do it.'"

The waiting room seemed to disappear.

Mercer asked another question.

"Why would Ms. Hale be necessary?"

Dad whispered, "Daniel said the account was built around Holt Ridge."

Rachel arrived while Mercer was still documenting Dad's statement.

She listened without interrupting.

When Dad finished, she looked at me.

"Could be some kind of legacy signatory structure."

"Meaning?"

"An old account tied to your company identity."

"I would know."

"Not if Daniel created it using early documents."

That thought made my stomach turn.

Again.

My company name used without me.

My signature copied.

My success turned into infrastructure for other people's deception.

I called Holt Ridge's bank security director.

Then our accountant.

Then the attorney who had handled the company's first year.

No one knew of a hidden account.

That didn't prove there wasn't one.

Daniel Hale had worked through shell entities.

Fake lenders.

False ownership structures.

An account could be legally attached to something resembling Holt Ridge without ever appearing in our active books.

At eleven thirty that night, Mercer received information from the operating room.

Daniel was conscious.

Barely.

The surgeon allowed five minutes.

Not an interview.

Five minutes.

Mercer went first.

Then he came back.

"He asked for you."

I stared at him.

"Me?"

"Yes."

Rachel immediately said, "No."

Mercer looked at her.

"She has the right to decide."

Rachel looked at me.

"So decide wisely."

I went in.

Machines filled the room with low mechanical sounds.

Daniel looked nothing like the uncle from my childhood photographs.

He looked old.

Smaller.

His skin had the gray cast of someone whose body had spent hours negotiating with death.

His eyes opened when I approached.

"Miranda."

I stopped beside the bed.

"You need to tell me about the account."

His mouth moved slightly.

"Straight to business."

"You're lucky I'm here at all."

A faint smile.

"Thomas always said you were efficient."

"Don't talk about Dad."

"Fair."

"Brooke has the case."

"I know."

"What does it open?"

"Nothing by itself."

"Then why did she shoot you over it?"

His eyes closed briefly.

"Because she thinks money is freedom."

"How much money?"

He opened his eyes.

"More than she knows what to do with."

"Number."

"Four point eight."

For a second, I thought I'd misheard.

"Million?"

He nodded.

My mouth went dry.

"Where did four point eight million dollars come from?"

"Years."

"Years of what?"

"Deals. Fees. hidden interests. things I should've reported."

"Stolen?"

"Some."

"Fraudulent?"

"Some."

"Legitimate?"

"Enough to complicate everything."

Of course.

Nothing in this family arrived clean.

"Why is Holt Ridge involved?"

"When Hawthorne closed, I created an investment structure."

"Without me."

"Yes."

"Using my company?"

"A derivative entity."

"What does that mean?"

"One that looked connected but wasn't operationally yours."

"Did it use my name?"

"Your company identity."

I gripped the bed rail.

"Then it was mine."

"No."

"You don't get to define that."

His breathing grew rough.

A nurse stepped closer.

He raised one finger.

More time.

I forced myself to stay calm.

"Why does Brooke need me?"

"Because I changed the controls."

"When?"

"After she found the will."

"Why?"

"I knew she'd try to drain everything."

"You expected this."

"Eventually."

"Then why not shut it down?"

He laughed weakly.

"Pride."

At least he didn't pretend otherwise.

"What controls?"

"Two-person release."

"Who?"

"Me."

He swallowed.

"And you."

I stared at him.

"I never consented."

"No."

"How?"

"Your signature template. biometric verification through banking update."

My stomach turned.

"What biometric?"

"Voice."

I stepped back.

"You recorded me?"

He looked almost ashamed.

"Years ago."

"When?"

"Family calls. public interviews. business media."

The television special.

Podcasts.

Company videos.

There were hours of my voice publicly available.

"That's not secure."

"Now it isn't."

"Was it then?"

"More."

I felt sick.

"Can Brooke imitate it?"

"No."

"Then why does she need me?"

"Live verification."

"She has the case. What else?"

"Account location. access token. recovery phrase."

"Where?"

Daniel's eyes closed.

For one terrible second, I thought he'd lost consciousness.

Then he whispered, "Not in the case."

"Where?"

His eyes opened.

"With Price."

Daniel Price.

The younger Daniel.

Hospitalized.

Potential co-conspirator.

Potential extortionist.

Apparently also custodian of access to millions.

"Why?"

"Because I stopped trusting Brooke."

"Why trust him?"

"I didn't."

That answer almost made sense inside the world he'd built.

Spread keys among people who hate each other.

Make betrayal difficult because everyone needs someone else.

"What is Brooke going to do?"

"Find Price."

"He's under guard."

Daniel's mouth twitched.

"Then she'll find another way."

"How?"

He looked at me.

"Same way she always does."

"What way?"

"She finds the person who wants something more than they want to be honest."

That sentence stayed with me.

Not because it was profound.

Because it described almost everyone involved.

Dad wanted peace.

Mom wanted Brooke safe.

Luis wanted his company.

Rebecca wanted money and protection.

Daniel Price wanted leverage.

Uncle Daniel wanted control.

And Brooke?

Maybe she wanted proof that nobody could decide her value again.

"Where will she go?"

Daniel breathed shallowly.

"Ask Price."

"What does he know?"

"Her exit route."

The nurse stepped forward.

"Time."

I leaned closer.

"Why leave me the estate?"

Daniel's expression changed.

"Don't."

"You wrote a letter."

"I shouldn't have."

"You said it was restitution."

"Partly."

"What else?"

He looked away.

"For Brooke."

I froze.

"You left it to me for Brooke?"

"To stop her."

"How does giving me everything stop her?"

"Because she measures herself against you."

My anger rose.

"You knew that and made it worse."

"Yes."

No defense.

No explanation.

Just yes.

"I thought if she believed she'd lost everything, she'd walk away."

"You thought humiliation would cure her."

He closed his eyes.

"I was wrong."

"You helped build her."

A tear escaped from the corner of his eye.

"I know."

The nurse touched my shoulder.

I stepped back.

Before I reached the door, Daniel whispered one last thing.

"Miranda."

I turned.

"Don't give her the account."

"I wasn't planning to."

"No."

His voice sharpened despite his weakness.

"Don't give it to her even if she has Thomas."

My blood went cold.

"What?"

"She knows where your father matters."

The nurse forced the visit to end.

Outside, I found Mercer.

"Brooke may go after Dad again."

"He'll have protection."

"Not may. Will."

Mercer nodded and started making calls.

Rachel joined us.

"What did Daniel say about the account?"

"Four point eight million."

Her expression went still.

"That's not a family problem."

"No."

"It's a financial-crimes case with family attached."

"Yes."

We went to find Dad.

His chair was empty.

Mom's too.

My pulse surged.

Mercer checked his phone.

"No unit reported movement."

I called Dad.

No answer.

Mom.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Then Rachel spotted a folded piece of paper on Dad's chair.

My name was written on the outside.

I opened it.

Miranda,

Your mother remembered something about Daniel's old account and didn't want to say it in front of police.

We're going to the house.

Don't follow.

Dad

I swore.

Mercer was already calling officers.

"Which house?"

"My parents'."

We drove there fast enough that I spent most of the trip gripping the door handle.

Two patrol cars reached the street first.

The front door was unlocked.

No forced entry.

No sign of Brooke.

Inside, the kitchen lights were on.

Dad sat at the table.

Alone.

"Where's Mom?"

He looked up.

His face was blank.

"She left."

"With who?"

He swallowed.

"Brooke."

The floor seemed to drop beneath me.

"What happened?"

"Your mother remembered the recovery phrase."

I stared.

"What recovery phrase?"

"For Daniel's account."

My body went cold.

"How would Mom know it?"

Dad looked at me.

"Because twenty years ago, Daniel used a phrase only your mother would remember."

"Why?"

His eyes filled.

"Because it was the name they planned to give Brooke before I agreed to raise her."
