The final stroke curved upward when mine naturally fell.

"Someone forged my signature."

Dad's face went pale.

Megan photographed the document.

"Don't alter anything," she said. "We need an attorney."

"I know."

Dad reached into his coat.

"There's another thing."

He handed me a printed email.

The account referenced my company.

The authorized representative listed beside it was a name I knew intimately.

My mother.

I looked at Dad.

"Why is Mom on this?"

"I don't know."

"Did she sign something?"

"She says she doesn't remember."

"That's not an answer."

"I know."

I stood and walked away.

For several minutes, the family conflict I thought I understood disappeared beneath something much larger.

This was no longer about Christmas.

It wasn't even about Brooke's jealousy.

Someone had used my information.

Possibly my company's information.

Possibly my mother's credentials.

The years of strange financial stories Brooke had told my parents might not have been random excuses.

They might have been camouflage.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

Megan looked at the screen.

"Answer it."

I did.

"Hello?"

"Am I speaking with Miranda Hale?"

"Yes."

The man's voice was formal.

He identified himself as Daniel Mercer and said he worked with a financial-crimes unit in Asheville.

Every muscle in my body tightened.

He explained that a bank had reported suspicious activity involving my business credentials.

I sat down.

"What activity?"

"Transfers initiated from devices inconsistent with your normal account history."

"When?"

"Over approximately eighteen months."

The same period.

"How much?"

He hesitated.

"We'd prefer to discuss the details in person."

"Please tell me."

Another pause.

"Current estimate is roughly sixty-three thousand dollars."

I stopped breathing.

Dad leaned forward.

Megan's pen froze above the paper.

"Sixty-three thousand?"

"Approximately."

"Where did it go?"

"We're still tracing all destinations."

"All?"

"There's more than one receiving account."

My hand began shaking.

"Can you identify any?"

"One account appears under the name Brooke Hale."

Dad stood.

I looked directly at him.

His expression told me he had heard enough.

The investigator asked me to come in the following morning.

"I'll be there."

"Bring identification and any relevant business records you control."

"I will."

"And Ms. Hale?"

"Yes?"

"Until we speak, don't confront anyone you suspect."

My eyes went to the envelope.

"I understand."

We ended the call.

Nobody spoke.

The fire cracked behind us.

Snow tapped softly against the windows.

Then my phone vibrated.

Brooke.

Not a call.

A message.

I opened it.

She told me I should have kept quiet.

A second message followed.

She claimed I didn't understand what she knew.

Dad whispered, "Don't answer."

"I won't."

A third notification arrived.

This one contained a photograph.

At first I didn't understand what I was seeing.

Then I recognized the room.

My living room.

The Christmas tree stood near the windows.

I was visible beside it, turned partly away from the camera.

The photograph had been taken from outside the house.

My skin went cold.

I checked the timestamp.

Christmas Eve.

Two nights earlier.

Megan moved beside me.

"Someone was here."

I looked through the glass toward the snowy terrace.

The windows I had chosen because they opened the house toward the mountains suddenly seemed enormous.

Exposed.

Dad stared at the photograph.

"Brooke sent that to me too."

I turned.

"When?"

"Last night."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"I didn't understand what it meant."

"What did she say?"

He lowered his eyes.

"She wanted me to convince you not to cooperate if anyone contacted you about the accounts."

I felt something inside me become very still.

"And if you couldn't?"

Dad's voice was almost inaudible.

"She said the truth would destroy this family."

I looked at the Christmas tree.

At the untouched gifts for my parents.

At the dining room where friends had filled chairs my family had abandoned.

For years, I had thought Brooke was the person my parents protected because she needed them more.

Now I wondered how much of that need she had manufactured.

Dad wiped his eyes.

"I'm sorry."

"For believing her?"

"For more than that."

He looked around my house.

"For always choosing whatever kept Brooke calm."

The words settled between us.

"We thought we were keeping the peace."

I looked at him.

"You weren't."

"I know."

"You were making somebody else pay for it."

His face tightened.

"I know."

For once, I didn't soften the truth.

Dad stayed another half hour.

Before leaving, he asked whether I would still meet the investigator.

"Yes."

He nodded.

"Good."

At the door, he stopped.

"You don't have to protect us from what happens next."

That sentence followed me back into the living room.

Megan was gathering the papers when another notification appeared.

Not Brooke.

An email from a law firm connected to Holt Ridge's corporate filings.

The subject line marked the matter urgent.

I opened the attachment.

It contained what appeared to be an early company authorization document.

My mother's name was listed as a financial representative.

A signature resembling mine appeared below it.

I checked the filing date.

Then checked it again.

My pulse began hammering.

The document was dated six months before Holt Ridge Developments had legally existed.

I stared at the impossible date.

Then at my mother's name.

Christmas had begun with my parents choosing Brooke because she supposedly needed groceries.

Less than forty-eight hours later, I was looking at evidence suggesting someone had been rewriting my financial life for years.

And for the first time, I couldn't tell whether my mother was another victim of Brooke's deception—

or part of it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: The Impossible Filing Date Forced Me to Ask Whether Brooke Had Been Lying Alone or
