We secured accounts Julian had been discussing. Evelyn contacted the trustees responsible for my father's estate. Passwords changed. Authorizations were reviewed. Notices were prepared.

Then she showed me the document that made Sienna's presence on the honeymoon suddenly look almost secondary.

It concerned several financial accounts Julian had proposed reorganizing after the wedding.

I remembered the conversation clearly. We'd been eating dinner when he slid the documents toward me and said married life would be simpler if we stopped thinking in terms of yours and mine.

I had told him I'd review them after Maui.

Apparently, he'd expected exactly that.

Buried inside the paperwork was language giving him managerial control over investments originating from my father's estate.

I read the clause twice.

“He knew I wouldn't agree to this.”

“That's why I'm concerned,” Evelyn said.

“He couldn't just make me sign it.”

“No. But ask yourself why the honeymoon mattered.”

I looked at her.

She pulled out the travel itinerary.

There were appointments scheduled in Hawaii that Julian had never mentioned to me.

One involved a financial representative.

Another involved document authentication.

My stomach tightened.

“He was going to bring paperwork on our honeymoon?”

“It appears so.”

“And Sienna?”

“She helped arrange the appointments.”

The room seemed to become smaller.

Suddenly I understood why Sienna needed to travel.

She wasn't simply a woman Julian wanted nearby.

She was involved in the logistics.

I stood and walked to the window. Manhattan stretched below us in rectangles of glass and stone. People moved along the sidewalks, tiny from that height, carrying lunches and bags, living ordinary afternoons.

Yesterday I had been a bride.

Today my attorney was explaining that my husband might have married me as part of a financial strategy.

“I feel stupid.”

Evelyn's chair moved behind me.

“Don't.”

“I married him knowing something was wrong.”

“You married him after discovering enough to be concerned, and you immediately protected yourself.”

“I still stood there and said vows.”

“You were gathering information.”

I turned around. “Is that supposed to make me feel better?”

“No. It's supposed to be accurate.”

That was Evelyn.

She never offered comfort at the expense of truth.

I returned to the table.

“What happens now?”

“We document everything. I'd ignored Evelyn's instruction about going home only until we finished securing the most urgent matters. After that, she arranged for someone from her office to accompany me.

I packed only what was unquestionably mine.

Clothes.

Personal records.

My grandmother's necklace.

A box containing photographs of my father.

I left the expensive gifts Julian had bought me.

I didn't want anything that could become an argument.

Before leaving, I stood in our bedroom doorway.

His suit jacket was draped across a chair.

One of his watches rested beside the bed.

My wedding bouquet sat in a vase near the window, already beginning to soften at the edges.

Twenty-four hours earlier, that room had represented my future.

Now it looked like a stage after the audience had gone home.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Julian.

They had landed.

Julian: We need to discuss what you did.

What I did.

I read the sentence several times.

Then another appeared.

Julian: I expect you to be reasonable when I call.

I laughed quietly.

It was the first time I'd laughed all day.

I photographed myself sitting across from Evelyn earlier that evening, the separation documents visible between us without exposing privileged details.

Then I sent Julian the photograph.

Beneath it, I wrote that he should enjoy Hawaii because I would not be joining him, waiting for him, or pretending his choices had been an innocent misunderstanding.

I sent the message.

Three dots appeared almost immediately.

Disappeared.

Returned.

Then my phone began ringing.

I silenced it.

In Hawaii, Julian must have finally understood that I hadn't thrown a tantrum at the airport.

I had left him.

What I learned later was that he read my message in the hotel suite he had reserved for us.

Sienna was there.

The ocean was visible through the balcony doors, bright blue beneath the morning sun. Champagne waited untouched on a table.
